I've recently retired in puerto galera, like the diving, drinking and decadence here. Cooking my own food bypasses the unsatisfactory food quality and riding my ktm alleviats the boredom.
I've been in Philippines close to a decade, moved all over as I get bored in one place. It's a simple life, have to be independent and do everything myself. I like the simple things like going to the gym and cooking my own food. Having lived in the city and the province I prefer to be on the outskirts of a city with a house with a nice wall. The province is beautiful but does get boring after a while. I think the province would be alright if you have reliable internet like starlink and some solar and batteries when the power outages hit for a week.
I watched a vid from guy that has returned to the USA after giving it a go in the Philippines and making just about every mistake state here. Married to the Filipina and has a care for her kids which he calls his own... But all kinds of things went sideways in the province, with the family it seems mostly because of the jealousy that emerged because of him, "the golden parachute", that dropped in built a rhetorical palace amongst the hovels, started businesses that went nowhere, got into fisticuffs with pissed off jealous extended family neighbor's that admittedly were acting out their discontent. He's back in Michigan now, apparently the Philippines is not for him... Consider his experience lessons to be listened to and learned. Prepare accordingly.
I saw that vid too. My wife is Pinay and we're in our late fifties, living in the US. My wife's been here since she was ten-years old and has a lot of family in PI. She says if we ever buy land/get a house in PI, she'd want to be a one or two hour drive from her family (in the province) to avoid drama and people pestering us for different things. :)
Hi Calvin. Charlie from Boston. 61 years young ,retired widower. Been in Mexico, most of the past three years & Vietnam twice this past year. Was invited to the Philippines in January….Of all places, ironically, Cebu. So I’m back watching you. Excellent video, i’m only halfway through and I had to say thanks .. I am back in Boston for Thanksgiving and Christmas both of my daughters will come to the house for the holidays in Boston . I sold my motorcycle in Mexico and gave the landlord back the key to my apartment. I’m in no hurry to leave Phillipines when I arrive. Aside from my house there’s nothing left here in Boston for me and the winters are long and cold here I got a friend in Cambodia who invited me the month of April and of course I got friends in Vietnam now I’d like to see. I am in good health and I am at the gym also regularly,my diet is good. I have only been two different countries and of course they are all somewhat different from each other That being said I still want suggestions from people like you who actually live in the country where I plan on staying for a while. You have a genuine sincere vibe. I appreciate everything you say, good looking out. I am not sure how far you are from Mactan Island or Cebu city where I will be staying, but I will come by and say hello. Sending you & your family peace light and love until we meet. Totally agree! People need to do their research to have a better time in the Philippines. Like Calvin says, it may not be for you but making the attempt is what's required.
My take away from watching this? Make sure you have a good plan when you get to the PH and network with others (Filipinos and other expats). Follow time-tested advice so that we can spare ourselves unnecessary heart ache. I’m on board with all this.
That may be true, but please don't blow smoke. You also almost came to bad times here (from what you said in one of your videos and lost a lot of money), but you recovered and eventually made a success, at least to what you consider a success. This vlog is your bread and butter. Nothing wrong with that. There is a point though where the negatives outweigh the positives, or where there are better alternatives for [most] retirees. Except for the easy kitty, and perhaps the lower cost of living (if you can avoid the many money traps), the Philippines has little to offer. It is, IMV a poor value for the cost and everyday hassles, especially for older retirees, who have never been outside of their own country. Even if you watch 1000 videos, it will not prepare you for what you will meet here. You are traveling halfway around the world to live full time in a substandard country. And, if you are weak or soft, forget it; you will be chewed up and spit out in the Philippines. Unless you're specifically coming here to meet the [easy] women, research other places either in SE Asia or closer to home before making a final decision. We do not need more unhappy foreigners. You CAN make it here, but it is very difficult.

@@calroach1 I’m just saying the Healthcare system isn’t the same in a 3rd world & 1st world country. I think it’s wise to realize that when you move there. I’m not stating an opinion, but fact.
the Philippines is not a place to live for typical social media consumer looking for paradise. hence the purpose of the boots on the ground and Calvins perspective. keep preaching my friend.
Lets face it, the ones who survive and actually thrive here are as Calvin correctly pointed out are "not normal". We are the ones outside of the matrix, outside of the masters psychological mind games and tricks and are free beings who exist in our own world far from the world of sheep. We make our own way out of nothing and are the "special forces", of the boots on the ground forces, who see into the depths of things and know how to adapt. This is not a put down of anyone, some places are for some people, other places were not. There is a way to wheel and deal in the Philippines and those who know, know. But like anything else, the only way you'll know is you can make it or cut the mustard is by trying it yourself, simple as that. I did, and im enjoying this once in a lifetime trip, because the Philippines is really teaching me a lesson about my own strength and weaknesses and who i really am. Theres nothing wrong with the Philippines. The Philippines is what it is, either you put on your survivalist gear and go for it or find another place that suits your character and nature.
Absolutely. If you have a good relationship here that is 99% of your happiness. For the rest, it's really a crappy, difficult place to live: heavy traffic, poor internet, brown outs (depending on your location), water outs, high electricity costs, lack of decent medical facilities, unrelenting hot/humid weather, etc. You need a LOT of patience, and high tolerance for noise and nonsense. We are on the cusp of moving to a different locale. If the prices continue going up and the quality stays low, it may be time to scout out another place.
Listening to an expat vlogger can be informative and give you food for thought. However, it is his perspective. Your's may or may not be the same. My thought is if you're considering the Philippines, come see for yourself. As for myself, I don't consider it a paradise because of all the poverty, but there are enough things that I do like that I have no plans for leaving. So come on over, if it's not your cup of tea you can always leave.
Once you arrive now what? You're flying by the seat of your pants. Getting the perspective of people doing what you want to do can be helpful. The final decision is with the individual.
I wouldn't advise it because you will miss the amenities. Not bad if you are within an hour of a decent size city. I was in a small town of Cadbaran for almost a month and it gets old quickly. I couldn't live there long term. No way no how. Its within 45 mins of Butuan but even there it is pretty small in itself.
I suggest not too far from Davao or GenSan. Digos area is nice. In city not for me either. But I need those amenities nearby! 150K/ month is more than enough for most anyone!
Are you here or just another armchair bro with an opinion? There's good information on UA-cam for people interested in retiring here, both positive and negative.

@@calroach1sorry Cal. 100% incorrect. They don’t have 911 or trained paramedics, nor advanced & available emergency services. Better
off in USA for sure.
@TumbleweedRocks thanks for your opinion. I don't live hypothetically. More people die of heart attacks in America than here sir. All heart attacks are not the same either.
@@calroach1 I’m just saying the Healthcare system isn’t the same in a 3rd world & 1st world country. I think it’s wise to realize that when you move there. I’m not stating an opinion, but fact.
@@TumbleweedRocks If you're old, fall down, and break your hip in the west, what are odds you die catching an illness in the hospital?
My 1st visit to the Philippines was Jan 1999 no u tubers, why do you need them,
Cause this isn't 1999 🤡
🫲🏻. … let me shake your Hand .. Cal… sheep will always follow the Flock… men like us.. will stand or lead .. keep speaking the Truth !… lead !

They are jealous
My friends told me you do not go,
My sister and some friends told me, go. And i am happy.
Boom
Okay, thanks.
The key to making it in any new country is to be open minded and not be rushed into anything. And for men, think with your big head its that simple.
Agreed. But it’s easier said than done.
the Philippines is not a place to live for typical social media consumer looking for paradise. hence the purpose of the boots on the ground and Calvins perspective. keep preaching my friend.

Is opening a seven eleven or online business a good idea ?
So long as you have a loving, caring, bedroom-actioned Filipina wife its all worth it.
@@calroach1 Absolutely.
Quite, but also don't think that the Philippines is the only game in town, or even the best one. Investigate other countries, and compare notes.
@@JamesHickman-g5c Good point.
I don’t live there yet just visited but won’t be to far from city
who is he talking about.. who got hit in the head with a bottole by a step son ?
When I retire in the Philippines I will come with no less than 100.00 to 150.00 thousand pesos a month and I will be living in the province
How long have you lived in the province here? How far is the place from the nearest city?
@@calroach1don’t live yet just visit, but will be in the south of Mindanao
I wouldn't advise it because you will miss the amenities. Not bad if you are within an hour of a decent size city. I was in a small town of Cadbaran for almost a month and it gets old quickly. I couldn't live there long term. No way no how. Its within 45 mins of Butuan but even there it is pretty small in itself.
Rethink that. Give city living a chance first. Province life isn’t for everyone.
I suggest not too far from Davao or GenSan. Digos area is nice.
In city not for me either. But I need those amenities nearby!
150K/ month is more than enough for most anyone!

They are just trying to scare off the young men with real money not social security
My friends over 60 are much richer than those under 50
The ones with real money don’t need to tuck tail.
Philippines expat vloggers very often have obvious agenda to promote. If they have a dating service sponser, that’s a big clue.
Are you here or just another armchair bro with an opinion? There's good information on UA-cam for people interested in retiring here, both positive and negative.
I don't believe Calvin does that, even if we don't always agree. He has made videos touching all kinds of subjects, good and bad. Anyway, no two people agree about everything.
Armchair bro's still cracks me up 😂
