I will add, the NeGcon is the only way you can completely clear the original PSX Choro-Q game, as it is impossible to finish the make-specific challenge races with the digital controller; the Lotus Elise challenge requires such fine inputs, the digital controller cannot provide the ultra-fine input control required to finish 1st.
This is cool. I've often felt the need for something more than a typical Dual Shock controller for racing games, but something less intrusive than a full blown racing wheel set up.
The Controller made for Wipeout. "Feel the Rush !!!". This kind of steering tech would also be absolutely perfect for modern Motorcycle games like Ride or Moto gp.
Had a Negcon Japan import back then before it was available in Europe. I loved this ingenious piece of hardware. Edit: Ace / Air Combat was damn cool with Negcon too. A new NeGcon version for PS5 would be a dream
@@jamesfmackenzie there is a psx (controller) adapter to usb 2.0 from Speed Link; thats the way i got my Dual-Shock 1 Working on PC; but still i have an DS 4 there is no need any more for this gamepad on pc ...
Thanks for posting this. I was researching other controllers with pressure sensitive buttons and I found this video. I've never seen this controller until now. It sucks that all these type of features always get dismissed by 95% of developers.
Puchi Carat and Prism Land are both Arkanoid-style games with NeGcon/mouse support. Basically, each end of the twist corresponds to that end of the screen, so you can pick exactly where on the screen your paddle is. You should check 'em out!
Never Ever heard of it although i have a psx scph 7502 on my own since 1998...^^ Thx for helping out in better precision and fun for rediscovered psx -games... such as GT (1/2, nfs 3-5...)
I'm going insane trying to find a usb adapter that will let me play pc games with my neGcon. I have an old Pelican adapter that worked wonderfully but it's dying now and the repair shops in my area have no idea how to fix it. I've spent 75 bucks on 4 more adapters none of which work with the neGcon. Someone help me.
Sorry to hear that. If it helps, I will give some of my adapters a test to see which work. What is the experience for “non working” adapters? No twist response?
@jamesfmackenzie the "Pelican PSX-USB LINK-UP" was my original adapter which worked without drivers on all OS having the attached controller appear as a GENERIC AXIS GAMEPAD, I'd be happy to send you pictures of it. The other adapters I've tested either make the controller appear in windows as an XBOX360 GAMEPAD or PLAYSTATION3 CONTROLLER and the neGcon is simply not recognized when plugged in (no signal through adapter). Some of these adapters even have a switch with WHEEL MODE. Note: I'm using Windows 10 and the neGcon is tested and working on real PSX hardware.
as a kid i always wondered about this controller when i saw it on ads in gaming magazines. would you say if it's better for racing games than analog sticks, or on par? seems like the steering could be more precise with the NeGcon.
It definitely takes some practice, but once it clicks it’s definitely more precise than analog sticks. The full range of movement is very large (180 degrees) and it picks up small movements 😎
ive got 2 of these.... was hunting around for tuts for getting this to work on ps3 for a while and it is possible but you need obscure adapters or xbx adapters?? this was the best alternative to a driving wheel!! i wish someone would bring it back....
I remember when I got a PS2, I hated that games forced you to use the analog stick since I was so used to the DPAD. Now I play some old games and using the DPAD feels so gross and imprecise. I never heard of these though....seems like a cool design. You ever try plugging it into a PC with an adapter and playing some other games with it?
If you have the adapter you can make it work with games that doesn't support it thru an emulator. I will get an adapter because I really want to try this out with GT3. I love that game but unfortunately it doesn't support it on the PS2.
Yes I was able to get it working on PC! Although it needs a bit of calibration for the dead zones, the end result is great 😎 May do a second video on this is future
No kidding here, I'm still using it today on PC and I'm racing iRacing IndyCar Class C fixed ovals. No room for a wheel setup and I'm so used to the NegCon that it works fine for me. No dead center, small detection zone and SMOOTH moving.
Fun fact: I added support for this controller in Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX, the game is fully playable (though not documented).
Amazing work! Will have to try this out!! 😎
Needs to be remade today for modern games, and include force feedback

100% agree!
True 🙏
You could also use this to play Pole Position 1 & 2 on the Namco museum releases on PS1. The best way to play it outside an arcade

Glad you found this controller interesting too! I agree it’s a great shame - all controllers are the same nowadays :-(

Thanks for the tips! Will definitely check these out! I’m tempted to do a marathon “NeGcon showcase” with all the supported games 😂
Puchi Carat will be best played on MAME with the PS1/PS2 to USB adapter, since the PS1 port is only in Japan and Europe...

WOW, I never knew this was a thing. Seems like a novel way to have some steering in an arcadey fashion without going full driver wheel.
Yeah, I really like the extra immersion for racers 😎

100% agree! The best controller for Wipeout bar none 😎
I wish it was the best. But much like an actual racing wheel, not every game is compatible with it. So use is very, very limited
Is Arkanoid compatible? Great video thank you.
Thanks - glad you enjoyed the video!
I believe Arkanoid on PSX supports the Namco Volume Controller - and by extension the NeGcon too 😎
