Love Stephen's honesty which he carries over into his commentating. No longer the force he once was on the table, he's now the best commentator by a country mile. Thanks for the great interview.
As a kid I hated Hendry as I always wanted to see Jimmy White win a championship, as I grew older I realised how much of a bad ass stepehen was and how lucky I was to see him play as I grew up whilst snooker was in it prime. Good Times.
That was the best interview I've heard with Stephen Hendry. Two intelligent blokes (Jake and Damian) with very well thought of questions that never get asked to Stephen to address his new comeback and himself as person. I will probably listen to this a few times.
I remember Stephen practicing relentlessly on table 1 at Miller’s Snooker Club in Broxburn in the early 80s, when he would have been 14/15. I was a member at the club and played maybe three times a week then and Stephen was there virtually every time I went. Even at that age, what a talent and what drive and determination.
@Matthew Philip that is utter pish imo. I don't think it's better now at all. There is a serious lack of talent right now in the game, worst maybe ever as no-one is playing the sport
Steven hendry took snooker to another level, he started one visit snooker which was once your at the table with a chance of a pot ( clear up with a 100 break) also he opened the reds as soon as possible, instead of picking off the loose ones as they did in the 1980s ,that is why the players are so good now
In his early career, a semi professional snooker player said "I keep hearing people say he smashes the pack as soon as possible. I'd say he carves the pack up". Now go back and watch his early matches. What you'll see is him running off the pack to maintain position on the black, loosening the pack so he can choose whether to keep carving or go into the pack a few shots later. He smashed the pack at the right time & from the right place to give maximum chance of being on a red not "as soon as possible'.
For me, Hendry was the Tiger Woods of snooker. He was so mentally strong when he dominated, his belief and will to win dragged him over the line when things didn't go his way. He could perform at extraordinary levels when the pressure was highest, just like Woods, Federer, Michael Johnson. Nobody dominated like Hendry did when he was at his peak in the 90s.

We will never truly know all the answers but one thing remains: Stephen is and always will be one of the greatest natural players ever to lift a cue.
That was probably the best and interesting interview I've ever seen. To have a 7×word champion sit and be so honest and inciteful was so refreshing to see. Most people don't open up and show their inner demons like that, they usually sit their and blow their own trumpet 🎺. Fascinating stuff to listen to, but also shows the real behind the scenes stuff and what truly goes through the mind of the person who is not only at the top of their sport, but the best in the world at said sport. Hendry mentioned Tiger Woods and he's mentioned Michael Schumacher in the past, and both of them guys were the dominant force in their sport and all 3 of them had that unrelenting drive to be the best, but to hear Hendry say that he loved having the target on his back was something not many people can handle. 5 of Hendry's world titles came against Jimmy White in the finals and I remember watching them live on TV, and because Hendry is Scottish and Jimmy White was English and the final being played in England, the sound of all the booing and shouting when Hendry walked out was really bad. Especially when snooker is renowned for being a quiet respectful game, but Jimmy White was the people's champion and the relationship between Scots and English in sports is far more than just a rivalry, so to be Scottish playing in England against the English fan favourite and beat him time and time again must of been truly exceptional and have ice running through his veins to play against Jimmy White, who was a truly exceptional player himself but Jimmy had 99% of the crowd for him, while Hendry knew that almost every single person in the crowd wanted him to lose and many of them hated him too. So to me that shows just what High Performance truly is.
Simply the best. What an honest interview from Hendry in my view the best ever. Best of luck to him with the comeback I think it will be tough but if anyone can do it, it’s him. 👍
Superb watch by interviewers who ask insightful questions and are genuinally interested in the answers. I was lucky enough to watch a 17 year old Stephen Hendry at the qualifiers for the World Championships in Preston in 1987. You could see he was destined for greatness even then.

I never liked Stephen’s attitude when he was playing regularly but his natural, uncompetitive self is a seemingly very nice guy. I hope he is successful in his new ventures. Cue Tips is very entertaining
Best sports interview I have ever heard. Unbelievable. Amazing deep and thoughtful questions and a Legend who opens up to give the answers genuinely. Amazing. Thank you very much.
Stephen Hendry. The most brutal snooker player I've ever seen. He dominated the sport for a decade. Ice cold killer instincts. I remember that gaze. Total focus all the time. Ronnie has more natural talent. More than even Jimmy White and Alex Higgins at their best. More than Judd Trupp and Neil Robertson today. Ronnie is the greatest natural talent of all time. But Stephen Hendry like Steve Davis before him, dominated the game. Now, Stephen Hendry is a great commentator. Back then I was a huge Jimmy White fan, still am to this day. Hendry was to Jimmy, what Steve was to Alex. They were so consistently strong. We were lucky to see the Davis - Hendry years. And one player I'll never forget. Tony Drago. From Malta. He played with way too much emotion. Wonderful talent. He may have been even faster than Ronnie at his fastest. Tony was very emotional. I swear there were times he was on the verge of crying in his chair. Anyway, my pick for the world champion this year. Mark Selby. He's been going through tough times recently, suffering from depression. I wish him all the best. I think he'll come back strong and win the world title again.
It’s interesting hearing him talk about the years when he was in decline. I remember two famous victories by Steve Davis when he was past his best (Ronnie O’Sullivan) and way past his best (John Higgins). From the smile on his face after those matches, it seemed to mean more than the world titles in the ‘80s. I wonder if there were any matches that Stephen won after his peak that were particularly significant for him.
Steven your very good and confident with all the players, as a seventeen year old you seemed rather shy , but very respectful . Great format and great input , enjoyable reactions from all players , good job Steven keep up the good work. Gazza. ( you've got a nice singing voice as well)
Would love to see Hendry go back to the 10-6 lifestyle just for a couple of years to see if he could win a big tournament again, he’s a natural winner so I don’t see the point in coming back to coast and lose as he’s never been that player!
This is a brilliant interview, and finally the question was asked that i thought would never happen. When you mentioned Anders Erriccson and deliberate practice. the conclusion i came to was you need to do a lot of hard work but there is also a raw talent. you either have it or you dont. Thanks
Closing Sheffield Crucible Can anyone tell me if this is true I've been told they want coronavirus certificates to enter The Sheffield steel boys are going to picket the venue..
Amazing interview by a snooker great, even now I still watch snooker because of Stephen even his commentry is so insightful. If you can get Ronnie on this show, i would definitely pay top dollar to watch that, the guy has been through a lot yet still at the top of the game. Putting High-performance in his everyday life to still remain at the top!
Hendry was the King of the 90 and what a player he was.Only O'Sullivan and Higgins I rate as the best I've ever seen and the tournaments they won despite playing all the best players in snooker and Williams who has won about 40 tournaments himself.
As far as I'm concerned hendry is still king of snooker cause no player as beat his record of the world titles in a row .Ronnie as won it 5 times now but not in a row so I think hendry is king of snooker till some one beats his record ....and I think he will win again once he is back up to standard it will be hard but he as the talent to do it again
@@littlegazza1430 if there were players like Selby, Robertson, Higgins, Ronnie, Williams, even Murphy who couldn't have won it 5 times in a row. he had it easy, Jimmy was no competition for him.
Was about to comment Hendry is an animal haha it’s so true he’s a born winner. O’Sullivan has the longevity and is a winner to. I honestly think they’re the two biggest serial winners who are obsessed with it, O’Sullivan pretends he doesn’t care but he’s absolutely obsessed
I take the was but not the is. Not practising nearly enough, half hearted come back. One of my sporting hero's, saddened me greatly how he fell off the horse
@@jhewitthunt There was zero robotic about Hendry a genius on the table. Took every shot on, straight into the pack no messing. Master break builder. Never bothered about safety play. Would still dominate today in his pomp with the open style of play around today. Lots more tournaments nowadays.
@@michaelmulhall5007 I wouldn't disagree. Still not as entertaining as Ronnie though. Let's bet honest, Ronnie is like a more talented Jimmy White. Everyone loved Jimmy too, but he didn't have the pure talent or killer instinct Ronnie has. Ronnie at his best would beat Hendry at his best. I think most people would agree with that. Hendry had better matchplay, and that is a Ronnie's biggest weakness. He gets bored too easily. If he had Hendrys focus, he would have definitely won more world titles by now....
@@barflytom3273 Took Ronnie 30 years to do what Hendry did in 10 and Hendry was Beating the O'sullivan's Higgins, williams etc when at his best so you can't even use the era as an excuse. Hendry is by far the greatest snooker player to ever live. Nobody has ever had complete control of a cue ball like Hendry or complete dominance of even the best players like O'sullivan and John Higgins. Hendry at his very best beats O'Sullivan at his very best or anyone for that matter. We'll never see another player play as well as Hendry at his best ever again. He was truly a rare breed of talent.
@@williamredpath861 Can't prove that. Ronnie at 17 years old, beat Hendry in a major final when Hendry was the best player in the world. Mentally prime Hendry is superior to Ronnie/more dominant in 90's, but talent wise, I don't think so. Class of 92 all outlasted Hendry, and are still relevant today all nearly 50, against younger high-level competition, they fell off the top/ lost form for periods and bounced back. They didn't fall off hard like Steven did after 30-35. That's what some of you guys don't want to acknowledge, plus how Ronnie's personal issues held his career back until he resolved them. Judd does not have the same issues, a major reason why he wins a lot. Hendry had a strict mentor/manager around to make sure he maximised his potential and stay focused. Not to mention Ronnie's stature in the modern game in UK and abroad, the last great personality left in the game.
Interested listening to Hendry. Like his honesty about how selfish he was. The interviewers were rubbish. Why did they spend so long on his lack of commitment on his comeback - he just loves the sport and wants to play a bit as a hobby
Heaaaavvvyyyy badboy. He may have seven world titles but his five in a row at the Crucible is the standard in consistency and dominance. There was never a doubt during this time. There's always a doubt with the rest of the field.
i can't tell whether jimmy wasted his talent or just didnt have it up top, but he is not in the same league as the others. davis was great, but there wasn't the same level of competition back in his era. ronnie's 6 world titles are worth more than davis' six. if ronnie gets a 7th, then i think he even pushes hendry into 2nd place, as he will then own or part-own Every major record in snooker.
@@danjackson7758 well, he did get his 7th, but what really pushes Hendry into second place is the fact that Ronnie is 46 years old and still at the top of his game.
Hard to pick anyone over the Rocket at this point. Gotta give the goat to Ronnie because of how long he’s been at the top. Heck, he’s world No. 1 again. Only Phil Taylor comes to mind to be as great for so long.
Love Hendry's brutal honesty here. First time I've seen him talk about his decline in such depth. Hendry has and always will be ( along with Stefi Graph ) my favourite professional sports players of all time. For the entire decade of the 90's they utterly and ruthlessly dominated their sports! Ronnie may now be regarded as the greatest for snooker and Serena for tennis after eventually surpassing most of their records however nobody has ranked No.1 longer than either of them still and nobody has ruled their respective sports like they did. Stefi's Goldern Slam ( 4 grand slams and Olympic gold in the same season ) will likely be equalled and Hendry's achievement of 7 World titles in 9 year period ( 5 consecutive World titles ) will ever be matched.
Went to clash of the titans those other night in Musselburgh Scotland Hendry Davies Dennis Taylor absolutely brilliant night 3 gentlemen Stephen Hendry brilliant 👏👏👏🏴🏴🏴
Think him and Roy Kean would make a great duo. Hate him or love him for me, he is a winner! When you do your job you are not here to make friends, your here to do your job!
I respect Hendry as a player because there was no doubt he is one of the greatest snooker players of all time not the greatest but one of the greatest Plus I also love the fact that he admires my all time sporting hero the great Michael Schumacher a man who I strongly believe to be greater than everyone that's ever set foot in any type sport But as a man I think Stephen Hendry is one of the most narcissistic cold arrogant sporting personalitys of all time I mean seriously putting your chosen sport before your family is wrong I wish Jimmy White had beat him in 1992 and 1994
You are a Schumacher fan and you think he's cold arrogant narcissistic? Yet you don't believe Schumacher was? When was Hendry arrogant out of curiosity?
The word you were stumbling to find Stephen was 'Dedication'. Put it in big bold sharpie on your fridge. You will still need it. But in saying that, you can never be considered shit because you have the achievements to point to. You can always say to detractors that "I've done this, what have you done?". Once a legend, always a legend.
I don't think anyone would consider Hendry shit, especially when he was in his prime, there was a 3-4 year spell it didn't look like he could miss a ball, he struggled later in his career but that was mainly due to not being as motivated and not putting in as many hours into practice, I suppose after I've won 7 World Championships and become a millionaire I wouldn't be thinking much about grinding out at the practice table every day. It's an issue a lot of top sportspeople have It's easier to focus when you are still hungry but after he broke the 6 world championships record he lost his motivation he didn't really have anything else to aim for he'd more than fulfilled his ambitions.
Closing Sheffield Crucible Can anyone tell me if this is true I've been told they want coronavirus certificates to enter The Sheffield steel boys are going to picket the venue..
In my opinion Stephen is the best of all time he won seven World titles and if I remember rightly he won 5 World titles in a row that achievement will never be beaten I was a big fan of Stephen in the nineties and I always wanted him to win its a privilege to watch ronnie play but if he has lost a match it doesn't bother me but if ever Stephen lost a match I hated it especially the world final when he lost to Peter ebdon I wanted to pick my TV up and throw it in the bin Lee Hambleton from Sheffield
This connects some dots for me as a massive Hendry fan. Hendry, I hope your reading... your comeback is half hearted, you need to practice 5 hours a day at least! Working with Steve Feeney and then months later you say I'm not taking my tour card because I've not been practising enough. I'll always adore you, but I can't be all in with your return if your not all in with practice - not willing to do the practice will not cut it Zero excuses for not practising, your 15 years off guys in building sites still lifting bricks for hours.
I think I agree with you in large part, Steven. I don't think he's fully committed or believing enough in himself to make any kind of a successful comeback as things stand. Not being prepared to do the endless hours of practice required is nothing new coming from an older player but why not not go for quality practice of perhaps 4 hours a day 7 days a week in the run to the JW match? I hope I'm wrong about his return but I think I can detect half-heartedness when I hear it especially coming from someone who once set such high standards in this area.
@@Sean-zg4iy Ultimately he has earned the right to do this and many more things and his achievements are astounding but for me as a massive supporter of him I should let the romance of the comeback fade away, I'll be watching every pot v Jimmy tonight though
@@stevengallagher635 It's ironic really as I'm more a Jimmy fan than a Hendry fan as I was once an Alex Higgins supporter over Davis. Hendry certainly has it in him to beat JW tonight I'd say. I'd agree with you that he's earnt the right to do this, no question. Sean
@@Sean-zg4iy He did 'it'. It's the it bit that has made my point on Hendry deafening. That was a disgrace from both players. If he gets put out in the next round but plays decent I might take some of it back. Winning a frame with a highest break of 7 is just shocking, missing pots by hitting the wrong side of the ball, if I was SightRight I would pay off the contract immediately 🙈
I'm running out of superlatives for this pod. You 2 are simply superb at these interviews. I have to stop myself being too gushy with you! What I love about these Pods is how totally authentic the guests come across ss. Either they are very good actors, or you both manage to put them at total ease. I think it's the latter. I find myself rewinding 30/60 seconds more and more on these Pods to relisten to something I found so interesting. Brilliant brilliant pod AGAIN! Well done fellas. BTW, I love snooker, but used to hate Stephen when he was at the top, because he was a boring robot. But I really like him as a pundit. So will be interesting to see if his playing return comes with his personality 👍
Self worth I think is the biggest thing you can get out of your work yes it's obviously better if your really good at your job but it's the old adage of you love what you do for work then it's never feel like it's work
Another great podcast. SH was beautifully honest and to the point. You ask for comments, may I be so bold; Boys, invest in some mic stands!! I'm sure you're on it, but you have to get Lewis Hamilton - love him of not, he's something different and a gamechanger outside of his sport too Chris Voss ex FBI Hostage Negotiator and author of Never Split The Difference Jocko Willink & Leif Babin both ex Navy Seals and authors of Extreme Ownership which comes out time and again with your guests And, another thought. How about a matrix/chart showing responses to the regular questions such as What is HP?, 3 non-negotiables, Advice to the teenage version, and the one golden rule. Would make a fascinating chart especially after you group the answers - one for you Damian Great work, thanks to you, the team and Lotus
Say what you like about Ronnie O’Sullivan, Judd Trump, John Higgins, Mark Selby or even Steve Davis, at their best they are all similar, but what Stephen had over all of them was the ability to play his best under pressure. The best pressure player (as Steve Davis says) and that’s why he is the best for me. Ronnie the best talent, but sport is about coping with pressure. It was scary, as an amateur player myself, what he could do with his back against the wall. People forget that. It was the final break against John Higgins in the 96 U.K. final after loosing loads of frames or the final 56 ish against Jimmy White, in the final frame of the 94 world final, after Jimmy missed the black, that only Hendry could do. O’Sullivan could not make that 56 at 17 all in the final frame of world final.
For me the greatest.

Amazing deep and thoughtful questions and a Legend who opens up to give the answers genuinely.
Amazing. Thank you very much.
The greatest of them all
What a golden video. An hour of insight into one of the greatest snooker players of all time!
I like very much Hendry and his way to play , I hope to think again to be back , 🙏🙏🙏
Stephen Hendry.
Loved this interview; true honesty of what it takes to be the elite.
Brilliant episode Hendry is a snooker great!
Steven your very good and confident with all the players, as a seventeen year old you seemed rather shy , but very respectful . Great format and great input , enjoyable reactions from all players , good job Steven keep up the good work. Gazza. ( you've got a nice singing voice as well)
Great podcast guys. You asked genuinely interesting questions in order to delve into the mindset of one of the best. Very enjoyable conversation . 🥃
Realy enjoyed the interview and honest comments on goat 2
Would love to see Hendry go back to the 10-6 lifestyle just for a couple of years to see if he could win a big tournament again, he’s a natural winner so I don’t see the point in coming back to coast and lose as he’s never been that player!
This is a brilliant interview, and finally the question was asked that i thought would never happen. When you mentioned Anders Erriccson and deliberate practice. the conclusion i came to was you need to do a lot of hard work but there is also a raw talent. you either have it or you dont. Thanks
Hendry is a legend. Goat

Brilliant interview. Everyone loves honesty.
The absolutely greatest Legend
Amazing interview by a snooker great, even now I still watch snooker because of Stephen even his commentry is so insightful.
If you can get Ronnie on this show, i would definitely pay top dollar to watch that, the guy has been through a lot yet still at the top of the game. Putting High-performance in his everyday life to still remain at the top!
He’s the best interviewee and commentator in the sport
best player of all time
Great interview and format...only critique is microphones need to be on a stand or headset.
Stephen is amazing, I love him!
@@barflytom3273 Hendry was beating Ronnie, Mark Williams and John Higgins when at his best so that's not true what you're saying.
@@williamredpath861 are you Scottish by any chance?
@@barflytom3273 Are you English by any chance?
this man was an animal , o’sullivan had the genius but hendrys drive was/is unreal
Totally agree with you there. Hendy was a boring robotic winner. Ronnie is a genius entertainer. Imagine combining the best bits of each!
Stephen Hendry is the greatest snooker player of all time.
That's debatable now.
@@iblacka1 not even debatable anymore. second best.
Nah…Ronnie is the best that has ever been up to now!
Stephen Hendry GOAT
Heaaaavvvyyyy badboy. He may have seven world titles but his five in a row at the Crucible is the standard in consistency and dominance.
There was never a doubt during this time. There's always a doubt with the rest of the field.
Never won first five in a row. No first time winner has ever defended it.

what a fantastic interview
Can we have Ronnie O’Sullivan on next please! 😀🙏🏼
That was a great interview, he has matured hasn’t he!
Yes no doubt 👍😁
Hendry and Davis two best ever - White and O’Sullivan best natural talents, most exciting and skilful a joy to watch, artists on a table.
i can't tell whether jimmy wasted his talent or just didnt have it up top, but he is not in the same league as the others. davis was great, but there wasn't the same level of competition back in his era. ronnie's 6 world titles are worth more than davis' six. if ronnie gets a 7th, then i think he even pushes hendry into 2nd place, as he will then own or part-own Every major record in snooker.
if you asked hendry and davis they would both unequivocally say that ron was the greatest
Natural talents? So they didn't practice?
Idiot
Love Hendry's brutal honesty here. First time I've seen him talk about his decline in such depth. Hendry has and always will be ( along with Stefi Graph ) my favourite professional sports players of all time. For the entire decade of the 90's they utterly and ruthlessly dominated their sports! Ronnie may now be regarded as the greatest for snooker and Serena for tennis after eventually surpassing most of their records however nobody has ranked No.1 longer than either of them still and nobody has ruled their respective sports like they did. Stefi's Goldern Slam ( 4 grand slams and Olympic gold in the same season ) will likely be equalled and Hendry's achievement of 7 World titles in 9 year period ( 5 consecutive World titles ) will ever be matched.
piss poor era they dominated
It feels great to hear that he's back, I hope he makes a return to the crucible again :)
Went to clash of the titans those other night in Musselburgh Scotland Hendry Davies Dennis Taylor absolutely brilliant night 3 gentlemen Stephen Hendry brilliant 👏👏👏🏴🏴🏴

That presenter guy is the best thing about BT Sport
He wants to win again but not confident enough to say it .. I believe he still has it
Absolutely brilliant. Loved that.
Think him and Roy Kean would make a great duo. Hate him or love him for me, he is a winner! When you do your job you are not here to make friends, your here to do your job!
Loved listening to this, thanks. :)
I respect Hendry as a player because there was no doubt he is one of the greatest snooker players of all time not the greatest but one of the greatest
Plus I also love the fact that he admires my all time sporting hero the great Michael Schumacher a man who I strongly believe to be greater than everyone that's ever set foot in any type sport
But as a man I think Stephen Hendry is one of the most narcissistic cold arrogant sporting personalitys of all time I mean seriously putting your chosen sport before your family is wrong
I wish Jimmy White had beat him in 1992 and 1994
You are a Schumacher fan and you think he's cold arrogant narcissistic? Yet you don't believe Schumacher was? When was Hendry arrogant out of curiosity?
Great honesty, brilliant hendry !
Closing Sheffield Crucible

I've been told they want coronavirus certificates to enter
The Sheffield steel boys are going to picket the venue..
I'll always adore you, but I can't be all in with your return if your not all in with practice - not willing to do the practice will not cut it
Zero excuses for not practising, your 15 years off guys in building sites still lifting bricks for hours.
Sean
@@stevengallagher635 He did it ...
You've got to love winning and absolutely hate losing.
“Within few weeks I was hitting 50 breaks” now that’s talent 😮

Self worth I think is the biggest thing you can get out of your work yes it's obviously better if your really good at your job but it's the old adage of you love what you do for work then it's never feel like it's work
For me it is enough just to see him play again.

Another great podcast. SH was beautifully honest and to the point. You ask for comments, may I be so bold;
Boys, invest in some mic stands!!
I'm sure you're on it, but you have to get Lewis Hamilton - love him of not, he's something different and a gamechanger outside of his sport too
Chris Voss ex FBI Hostage Negotiator and author of Never Split The Difference
Jocko Willink & Leif Babin both ex Navy Seals and authors of Extreme Ownership which comes out time and again with your guests
And, another thought. How about a matrix/chart showing responses to the regular questions such as What is HP?, 3 non-negotiables, Advice to the teenage version, and the one golden rule. Would make a fascinating chart especially after you group the answers - one for you Damian
Great work, thanks to you, the team and Lotus
If you are exceptional at something you won't have to do anything, they will come to you;
Say what you like about Ronnie O’Sullivan, Judd Trump, John Higgins, Mark Selby or even Steve Davis, at their best they are all similar, but what Stephen had over all of them was the ability to play his best under pressure.
