The ironic thing is that, besides Ayala, who beat the 125 backup, the only ones who had a chance to win were the one - and - done hired guns, stolen from other schools.
Wrestling is an individuals sport. Iowa should focus on getting 7/8 All Americans, a National Champion, and a Team Trophy (2nd place). That would be a successful campaign, regardless of not winning it all. Keep pushing for top tier recruits and the plug in NIL veteran along the way!!
All the major programs have resources….the only difference is the coaches. Great kids, great atmosphere, great coaches. Lastly, Penn State won a national team award last year for TEAM GPA of 3.85….id like to know the team GPA of Iowa.

The thing I keep thinking about with regards to Brands is that some point in the very near future he's going to be doing recruiting visits trying to sign kids who will not be in college until Brands is over 60 years old. He won't even have a contract that covers many future recruits entire college careers. So whether Iowa moves on from Brands now or in a few short years, what is the difference? In that short time Iowa won't be catching PSU.
The same skills that made Tom an olympian are not the same skills that makes him motivate men. I'm a huge wrestling fan. I attend the Big Tens and NCAAS. IA does a good job at recruiting hs standouts, generational talents, and acclimating them to the grind of DI athletics. Then Tom does what Tom does - he continues to grind. His wrestlers get tough but not better. Its patently obvious that IA is the North Korea of college wrestling programs. They got muscle, they got resumes and they can take brutality but they wilt on the world stage. Whether in arts or athletics, virtuoso performers are much more than willpower military machines. They must engage their heart & passion as composite human beings. The best and brightest win in rarified air because they improve without being introspectively critical. After getting used to the toughness of college, Iowas grapplers don't improve. They are all like Kemerer. They end up physically emaciated (think McDonough), psychologically exhausted (Lee, Marinelli). By the time March rolls around, the team looks like a bunch of bandaged veterans. As a chaplain, i was responsible for the spiritual lives of NFL & DI athletes. Across the board, all athletes work until exhaustion, and the fun comes with winning. It's fun to win. But his recruits are not winning. They're not having fun. And for a fan, it's not enjoyable. New case study: let watch Ben Kueter follow this same pattern and end up another patient in the VA medical center of college wrestling.
Majority of Penn States guys are from the midwest.... Wisconsin, MO, MI, MN, ... All guys that Brands had right in his backyard..
Its getting harder and harder for brands to get national champion transfers because most of the national champs are nittany lions

Its almost as if they believe THEY'RE the expert when, in fact, they're just a weak, fair weather loser that the team or coach doesnt give af about. Gilman left Iowa camp to learn from Penn St and THEN he has international success. And where is Gilman now? ….at Oklahoma St with a former Penn State wrestler, gold medal winner turned coach.

The real question is with the high school wrestling in Pa,why wasn’t Penn State better before Sanderson. The best wrestlers from Pa. always went to Iowa or Oklahoma.

I disagree with your assessment. PA had a few Powerhouse top 20 schools like Clarion, Loch Haven, and Bloomsburg. The elite wrestlers were spread out among many teams. You also had Edinboro that was top notch. 2nd tier teams like Slippery Rock, Millersville, East Stroudsburg, Pitts Johnstown. There was no need to congregate at one school. The title IX debacle that destroyed Div I programs led to what we have today. 300 schools down to about 80 programs.

PSU is dominant in the neutral position..3 pt takedown is the key to winning bouts/matches..until the rest of the country realizes it/trains for the takedown..get better..PSU winning will go on..on..on.
I don’t understand Brand’s decision at 184. Clearly he has stated that Arnold is the guy at 184. He even even stated that after the match. Then why send our Angelo. Angelo takes a loss and probably loses some confidence even though he did put up an excellent match. Arnold is pissed that he didn’t get to wrestle it offense both parties
at once. Cael would never have done that. Psychologically it’s just a horrible decision.
Ferrari is the better wrestler. Starocci wasn’t just roasting Arnold when he said that.
Arnold is 80% mouth 20% wrestling.
My interpretation of what Tom said is that Angelo will get his 5 events, and they will use him against tough guys (so, they don't need to send Gabe out there to take a loss). In the long run, this accomplishes two things. First, it gives Angelo a test, and a loss which won't be on his collegiate record. Second, it preserves a very good Won/Loss percentage for Gabe so he can get as high of a seed as possible going into B1G championships.
@@Footestomper This is exactly why Iowa isn't getting better. Agree Cael wouldn't do this. I think Cael would have sent out Arnold to learn something. Arnold isn't winning a national or Big Ten Championship this year. Arnold could have learned so much maybe not this year but better prepared him for the future
I don't think any coach can beat PSU, Cael is the new Gable and will probably rule the wrestling world until some Phenomenon comes along
The other problem is what top-level recruit wants to go to school at a place whose coach is going to go out and spend the bank to buy a successful guy to come at wrestle at the school in that kid's weight class. Sanderson is honest and tells these kids they need to earn their position at PSU. Brands will stab the kid in the back and go out an buy a top-level kid to wrestle at Iowa.Brands will never get the best as the best reside at PSU! Brands needs to develop within but I understand that he is at his wits end with PSU nightmares keeping him up at night.
How did Iowa dominate before? Wasn't Pennsylvania the same? It's the coaching. And Messenbrink has everyone's number.

Unfortunately, State Penn wrestling is on a different level right now. Cael has the type of talent and teams Gable had back in the 80s and 90s.
It is crazy the gap between Penn State and everyone else. Caliendo is the number 2 wrestler at 165 and he got TFed by Mesenbrink. Mesenbrink hasn't had a single opponent go the full time this year. Iowa could try to hire Dake. He might have the ability to at least make a team competitive. I still don't get how penn can lose a 4x national champion and their team still gets better
Bo nickal, david taylor, aaron brooks, kerkvliet, messenbrink, josh barr, none of these guys were from pa. Dont get me wrong pa is the best wrerstling state by far but dont tell me psu is winning solely on Pennsylvania wrestlers

Penn Stae is 10-0 in duals this year. They shut out four of their opponents. Four of their opponents scored 3 team points. one (Nebraska) scored 7. Iowa scoed 8, the most of anybody this year.
30 points is the lowest number of team points scored by Penn State. They have scored over 50 three times and over 40 in another three matches.
they were better in every way….out coached, out prepared. Brand’s coaching is so outdated all we can hope for us to finish in the top four

I am a PS fan, but it seems like they are nothing more than a transfer portal team. They used to have studs like Sorensen, Lee, Clark,etc. I think they need a coaching change. Their guys conditioning is not good.

I think iowa should hire bishop mccort and faith christian academies coaches and assistant coaches from pennsylvania. That would get you two bachmans, adam watters, bo bassett, melvin miller and jax forrest. Plus the coaches at these two schools have proved you can cheat and illegally recruit and pull wrestlers from all over the country in high school. You may have to name the arena after bo basset and the urinals and toilets after his father before you name him coach

Let me give you the update on next year, your wrestling team will start out 8-0 and run your mouths again and you will prove you stink. Your football team will have a good defense a 1,000 yard rusher who will get hurt by game 10 and be out for the year, your qb will stink as will your offense but you will be 8-4 and happy about another average year. You will a average 24.8 pts per game and you will still be talking about caitlin clark
