I have worked with MPB Germany before and based on my own personal experience using them myself I had good experiences with both buying and selling. But I hear more and more complaints from people in the Uk and US who have some serious issues with their delivery or service in general. A real shame because I can only speak for my experience in Germany which was mostly good. But don't think I will work with them again if the overall experience world wide is so bad...
MPB used to be good in the UK. Straight up lied to me about the quality of a lens (Olympus 12-40 2.8 pro I used to film a gig once. Bought new on a great offer and sold to them). “Heavily used” it was apparently”. Their offers are just really low and even with eBay’s fees and postage you’ll get a better price there

It must be difficult for Content Creators to keep up with which sponsor is giving clients a good experience. However, your recommendation to stick with the local camera shop is first class.😄
I always sold my gear on Ebay and that's where i got the most out of it. MPB is OK, if you have no other choice and need the money fast. Local store just low-balled me (offered 700 for something i sold for 1200 on Ebay in 3 days).
I’ve done your 3rd option - buy/sell forums, for over a decade with zero incidents and with the best economics. Establishing yourself as a trusted member on a good forum like that, by far, is the best ‘investment’ you can make if you’re into buying and selling, and changing gear.
I'm always watching channels like this and never leave without thumbs 👍 because it takes a lot of work to put in online. Now, back to the topic: great tips on selling and buying camera gear. I've used the two main online sources suggested, with excellent results. PS I bought your book! Great photographys!
This has been so good to hear. I’m so scared of being scammed using EBay so I use a camera shop in the UK called Harrison’s. They will pay a bit more than MPB. I would probably make more with private sales but don’t want the type of stress that you spoke about
I brought (and sold) almost all my photography gear through Mercari, Amazon second hand and Rakuma. Japanese people take good care of their gear and never had a bad experience. fujinon 16-55 , 50-140, 100-40mm. 23mm . Fuji XH2-s , XT4. 1.4 and 2.0 extenders. Battery handgrips----- the whole shabang. Granted, you need to be able to register and being based in Tokyo at the time made it extremely simple. I also tried many lens and resold them - with next to no loss except to listing success fee.
I've been using ebay for 20 years now, mostly good experiences. But from time to time I peak into Japanese auction sites and wish I had an easy access to the stuff they sell there 😄 one day I'll use a proxy service to buy and ship stuff to Europe I guess
I feel my experience best/worst list is in reverse. The deals I've gotten on Ebay/Offerup is far better than what I'd ever get from a local camera store.

Im a ebayer since 20 years , I met some scammers but also very nice people, dealt with others ebayers from everywhere , had some issues but resolved thanks to paypal, ebay nevere really helped, I shoould say the ebay branch in Albania who takes care of customers. Also tried mp b many times and it was a really ugly experience , felt pirate street market. Hard times usually make people bad and greedy, so thats what we have. Ciao !
Great Video again :) I sold a couple of cameras and lenses to MPB (Berlin), because i was in a rut und needed some money. The price was low, but i had to accept as i needed the money fast. After two days i checked the price of my items listed on the MPB website for sale (as they also have pictures with serial numbers). MPB was selling the gear for 80% more than i got from MPB. I sold it for approx 1000 EUR and they sold it for 1.800 EUR. I did have a weird feeling in my stomach seeing this, but i guess it was my own fault.
I agree generally. In London Park Cameras is fabulous, they inspect & give you a price in minutes then send a back transfer to be in your bank in days. Super easy and their prices were very fair (not been in area for 1.5 years so hopefully still the same). I used to use MPB a lot but it seems they have increased their margins these days whilst sponsoring a lot of youtube videos. I would still buy from them but the prices when you sell are not so great these days. There are also some shops who will sell for you at price you set and take a commission like SRS in Watford but this can take some time and you get 75% of selling price.
I finally got an ricoh gr iii after I watched countless videos of Samuel having fun with it ^^. I wish you the best, may the doors of blessed money open up for you and may you aways produce content that is true to your self and beneficial to the community .
Had the best success selling local through FB marketplace, just might have to be patient and willing to sort through the weirdos. My local camera store gives absurdly low offers for used gear and then when they sell used gear it’s 10%-30% higher than online. Buying used gear … I’ve had good experiences with KEH, MPB, and Adorama and B&H. I also have bought high end cameras through FB with very established sellers through Fuji or Leica buy/sell groups.
“Im willing to pay $200 over asking price. I need you to ship it to my sister’s place with next day delivery while I find a baby sitter for my kids.” The last message I got before I took a break from FB marketplace lol.

Aside from margin, resellers have a cost to fund their purchase of camera gear. They will have to keep paying that interest till they sell the gear. Even if they are not borrowing, they are losing the interest on the cash that is stuck in the purchased gear till it sells. Same applies to people selling on eBay - you are losing interest you could have otherwise made on the value stuck in your gear. Interest rates have gone up - so one of three things happens with resellers - price they offer to buy at drops, or price they sell at increases or both because wages for their employees have to go up too because of inflation.
Honestly, Ebay and especially Kleinanzeigen is basically gambling but it's also fun and with a little experience and luck you can land great bargains and make good money.
MPB (Germany) has always been good to me. I value speed and safety over making a few more euros but having to deal with potential buyers directly. However, I'm not the kind of person who's continuously flipping gear around, so when I sell it's stuff that's 10+ years old and normally there's not a lot of difference in price. I once sold a couple of things in person at the B&H store in New York: quick and easy, here's what I'm selling, here's the quote, fine, here's your money, done in 5 minutes, just how I like it. I can certainly recommend it. Indeed, I only have good things to say about B&H, both online and "live".
I will NEVER buy from MPB ever again..recently purchased a "like new" Canon ef-m lens from them..lens cap was covered in a thick layer of dust..front lens glass was covered with fingerprints/residue...this was the one in NYC USA
Forgive me for saying, but wouldn’t “Like New” refer to the condition, not the cleanliness? - was there dust _inside_ the optics, was the paint scratched up? If it can be made like new with a wash, then it’s in like new condition to my mind. I don’t expect a second hand item, no matter how good it is, to be cleaned for me. The only exception to this is if it has been in a smokers house because the smell is permanent, but temporary dirt is expected - maybe I’m completely out of my mind with this, but I would never buy “Like New” anyway, these places give such a slight discount over new that it’s just not worth the risk you’ve got something stolen or had invisible damage.
I use eBay all the time and over the years I bought and sold thousand of pound of expensive gear. Have sold and bought camera gear on KEH, mpb and EBay. Never have done it in person. Have had positive experiences with each on-line company. If I had to rank them #1 mpb, #2 KEH and #3 EBay. Not happy with fees involved with EBay. Have also had a few positive experiences with B&H Photo.
I think one good advice is, if you have the money, buy what you want before selling what you don't want, so you will know for sure if you are making a good decision, and therefore being able to decide which one to keep.
YES thank you, selling on Ebay is such a pain! I've spent so much time and money mailing cameras to people and they just wanted to try it and play with it and then they want to return it. Sorry, I'm not a store, I don't take returns just because you don't want to keep it," so the buyer then lies to ebay that there's something wrong with it when there isn't, and you have no choice but to give them their money back and pay for the return shipping. A huge pain in the butt, and people suck!
I have bought and sold on Ebay for years. Lots of legitimate stores use Ebay as a shop: never a problem. The only problem I ever had was a guy in India who said he din't want to buy... but the camera was already in India, in customs. Ebay cancelled his order, I had to pay him back. But then Ebay refunded me the price. Ten years... one incident, otherwise fine.
I also use the camera shops that are wholly/mostly online: MPB, Carmarthen, Park, Bristol et al: always great, exactly as they describe, very reliable.
Für Leica-Equipment kann ich in Deutschland noch Foto Görlitz empfehlen. Sehr gute Kommunikation, faire Preise und falls man dort noch etwas kauft, erhält man dafür auch noch einen Vorzugspreis. Topp!
Facebook market is another option, but it is full of scammers. I would only recommend it if you pay or get payed in cash. Thanks for the interesting topic!
This is for buying and not selling. But just sharing since KEH was mentioned and most people selling gear and probably also going to buy gear. Tbh I cannot use KEH again. Have had items from them that fail and I’m left wondering how thorough is their checking. Given they take in a wide range of equipment from different eras and different manufacturers, do they really have staff with deep expertise in all these areas? We’re probably talking about engineer level knowledge and know how, or at the very least, pro rental house level (someone like Roger Cicada). Getting customer support was also difficult and at times unpleasant. Really disappointed. If anyone has continued good experiences with them, that’s great. But if you’ve never tried, I’d not go in with the expectation that everything will be ok and you will be taken care of.
Ich finde Ebay nicht so schlimm, wie hier beschrieben. Ich verkaufe immer per Paypal (natürlich nicht "Freunde und Familie) und versende mit Sendungsverfolgung. Dann ist man auch als Verkäufer geschützt. Ich hatte wirklich noch keine wirklich schlimmen Erfahrungen (bei über 590 Transaktionen (Kaufen und Verkaufen)).

So many sellers try to argue asking for payment via Paypal & Friends which is a) illegal for non-family & non-friends as per the user agreement and b) completely ridiculous to ask buyers to send HUNDREDS of Euros without any third-party middleman to a stranger online. So no, it's not hard to be scammed on ebay if every seller only sells via an illegal and idiotic payment method. The only way is to drive to the location itself but then you spend as much for gas/train than the difference to buying new in many cases. The whole "don't sell via safe payment, only paypal & friends" movement by sellers completely destroyed ebay & fb marketplace. E: I see you speak of the big ebay, not the local one. I personally never had any problems with normal ebay for tech gear. But since local marketplace ebay/fb got more popular you rarely ever find anything on there other than commercial and international resellers. Ebay for private people got killed by local marketplaces and local marketplaces got killed by paypal & friends.
MPB here in the UK is not that great. I purchased a used xs-10 from them 2 years ago which worked well, however I also purchased a 16-50 fuji lens (marked as "almost new" or whatever they call it, almost as expensive as new) to go with. The lens was bust, like so badly, I could see the distortion just by shooting a corner of my room. I sent it back for replacement. They then sent a replacement that was somehow even worse. I then went to their website and noticed they put the first lens back online for sale (could see from the id numbers they use). It's important to understand we're not looking at pixel-peeping here but massive barrel distortion, edge (more like half the image to be honest) blur at optimal aperture and settings and inability for the lens to focus on anything but things that are a specific distance from it. Really misaligned and just unusable even for an amateur such as myself. I contacted them and told them the second lens is bust as well and questioned their QC. I got a response from customer support, claiming that the lenses went through rigorous checks (right...) and that their quality control team lead personally vouches they were all thoroughly checked etc. I then took a series of photos exposing the issues and provided them with a full info and markup for each. There was silence for a couple of days and then they said they'd send me a replacement, but I opted for a refund instead. HOWEVER. Guess what. They put the second lens back for sale as well!!! Despite all the evidence they had it was badly dysfunctional! Still as "as good as new" category! That really pissed me off, selling broken junk to people that may not be clued up and not even be able to tell something is wrong with the lens (but maybe blame their lack of skill if new to phtoography), so I wrote a long Trustpilot review exposing their practice. Almost immediately a customer service manager contacted me and told me they'd taken the lenses off and bla bla bla and some more bla bla bla....and here's a voucher for 10% off next purchase on our site...AS IF lady. I have ZERO doubt they very well knew the lenses were broken, but were banking to sell them anyway. Maybe 5 people will send them back and the 6th won't. Lenses were being sold as "nearly new" or some such but in reality they needed a full repair and would probably be worth about a 100£ to someone that could repair them. *Edit: Lenses were actually the 16-80 variant, just went and checked. I went for the tamron 17-70 (new) after the debacle and it's such an amazing lens.
I will NEVER sell my gear to a camera shop...the offers I've got in the past were ridiculous! They wanted to pay me 300€ and they had second hand models in the window for 1100€ !! not in better condition! Its a SCAM! and I'm talking about German stores and not just one! From NRW!
Ich kaufe und verkaufe fast kein aktuelles Gear gebraucht. Lohnt einfach nicht. Wenn du verkaufst, kriegst du vielleicht 60% des Neuwerts. Wenn du kaufst, kriegst meist nicht mal 20% Rabatt gegenüber Neukauf. Vintage Gear ist natürlich was anderes.
would never trust ebay with expensive things. Facebook marketplace is also crap, professional scammers all over the place that "want to pay through paypal". That's your key to block them and move on. And other local marketplaces go to a public place with people around, a cafe or something of that nature so hit and run would be a bit more difficult.

Dont think there's ever one best way to sell, sometimes your local camera store or something like mpb do offer a competitive price, other times eBay makes far more sense, although of course there is the risk element. Also with eBay you dont get paid till a month after purchase
True! And it also depends on what you are selling. Expensive gear is usually better sold locally if possible or with reputable resellers but low budget gear can sell very well online. As a buyer things are different again.

I have always been happy with KEH. They have buyers that travel around and set up a table in a local camera store. Nice to deal with a person. They do want pristine equipment though. Any marks will greatly reduce any offer you get.
I bought a lens from them, “excellent” condition, without caps. During the few months I had it I found caps for it, then when I went to sell it back to them suddenly it’s “ugly” condition and they’re offering me 20% of what they sold it to me for. Pretty disappointing because I’d been spending a lot of money with them thinking I could trust their condition ratings. Might as well take my chances with eBay.
lol, all those you mention as "good options" always offer a bad price because they want to sell at a good price. On eBay, you can set a price in between. Let's say you want to sell a x100v: Online store reseller offer: 1300 so they will sell at 1800 EBay: I can sell for 1600. 1499 if I'm in a rush, It will take longer and don't forget to mention that you don't accept returns. Simple Only to prove it I quote an x100f in excellent condition at KEH and they offer 450 last week I sold one at 1100 on eBay This video is a joke

the reason why I stopped following "street photographers" on youtube is their lack of encouragement of people to make their youtube channels and share their street photography journey to the world. It's understandable to make their videos their own work and about themselves but they should at least encourage/inspire the viewers to make their own youtube channels. I guess they don't want competitions. I guess it's out of fear that their youtube channels eventually become irrelevant if new upcoming better youtube channels pop out. For that reason, I've unsubscribed

I personally love seeing more street photography UA-cam channels and actually always recommended UA-cam for street photographers. It's the best way to share photos online (besides websites).

customer service for MPB is awful, I find ebay is way better platform for reselling gear, just be fair and reasonable.

Rule of thumb for me when selling in person is to go to the public place with CCTV cameras pointing right at you. Stay safe people

Yes, I've had some problems here in the U.S. as well. Lots of broken promises to correct them x 2-3 month & nothing.
They are hopeless , only 6 month warranty 😆

For local sales, meet at a bank. There are surveillance cameras. If someone is going to try a scam, they won’t want to meet there.

From what I see, MPB aren’t really interested in film equipment. Pretty much only digital gear. My first choice in the EU is Kamerastore.
At least in the USA: the Fred Miranda "Buy & Sell Photo-Gear" forum.

I would love to use my local camera - shop, but the prices for selling used gear are really, really bad. I got a lot more (around 50%) from MPB.
If you do your research and ask the right questions, I think eBay is still good. Great video mate 👍🏻
I have never had any problems with Kleinanzeigen so far, but I agree, you need to be careful and follow the rules.
Meister Camera was a great store, on used cameras they had always better prices than MBP.
I have bought and sold on Ebay for years.
Lots of legitimate stores use Ebay as a shop: never a problem.
The only problem I ever had was a guy in India who said he din't want to buy... but the camera was already in India, in customs. Ebay cancelled his order, I had to pay him back. But then Ebay refunded me the price.
Ten years... one incident, otherwise fine.
I also use the camera shops that are wholly/mostly online: MPB, Carmarthen, Park, Bristol et al: always great, exactly as they describe, very reliable.
I have liked and commented. Maybe next time I'll share. The trifecta of the UA-cam interactions. 😂
Für Leica-Equipment kann ich in Deutschland noch Foto Görlitz empfehlen. Sehr gute Kommunikation, faire Preise und falls man dort noch etwas kauft, erhält man dafür auch noch einen Vorzugspreis. Topp!

At that time I was still using the Fujifilm X-E4! And the lens used here was the 15-45mm kit lens : )

This is for buying and not selling. But just sharing since KEH was mentioned and most people selling gear and probably also going to buy gear. Tbh I cannot use KEH again. Have had items from them that fail and I’m left wondering how thorough is their checking. Given they take in a wide range of equipment from different eras and different manufacturers, do they really have staff with deep expertise in all these areas? We’re probably talking about engineer level knowledge and know how, or at the very least, pro rental house level (someone like Roger Cicada). Getting customer support was also difficult and at times unpleasant. Really disappointed.
If anyone has continued good experiences with them, that’s great. But if you’ve never tried, I’d not go in with the expectation that everything will be ok and you will be taken care of.

Ich finde Ebay nicht so schlimm, wie hier beschrieben. Ich verkaufe immer per Paypal (natürlich nicht "Freunde und Familie) und versende mit Sendungsverfolgung. Dann ist man auch als Verkäufer geschützt. Ich hatte wirklich noch keine wirklich schlimmen Erfahrungen (bei über 590 Transaktionen (Kaufen und Verkaufen)).

So many sellers try to argue asking for payment via Paypal & Friends which is a) illegal for non-family & non-friends as per the user agreement and b) completely ridiculous to ask buyers to send HUNDREDS of Euros without any third-party middleman to a stranger online. So no, it's not hard to be scammed on ebay if every seller only sells via an illegal and idiotic payment method. The only way is to drive to the location itself but then you spend as much for gas/train than the difference to buying new in many cases. The whole "don't sell via safe payment, only paypal & friends" movement by sellers completely destroyed ebay & fb marketplace.
E: I see you speak of the big ebay, not the local one. I personally never had any problems with normal ebay for tech gear. But since local marketplace ebay/fb got more popular you rarely ever find anything on there other than commercial and international resellers. Ebay for private people got killed by local marketplaces and local marketplaces got killed by paypal & friends.
I never had bad experience with Ebay...

MPB here in the UK is not that great. I purchased a used xs-10 from them 2 years ago which worked well, however I also purchased a 16-50 fuji lens (marked as "almost new" or whatever they call it, almost as expensive as new) to go with. The lens was bust, like so badly, I could see the distortion just by shooting a corner of my room. I sent it back for replacement.
They then sent a replacement that was somehow even worse. I then went to their website and noticed they put the first lens back online for sale (could see from the id numbers they use).
It's important to understand we're not looking at pixel-peeping here but massive barrel distortion, edge (more like half the image to be honest) blur at optimal aperture and settings and inability for the lens to focus on anything but things that are a specific distance from it. Really misaligned and just unusable even for an amateur such as myself.
I contacted them and told them the second lens is bust as well and questioned their QC. I got a response from customer support, claiming that the lenses went through rigorous checks (right...) and that their quality control team lead personally vouches they were all thoroughly checked etc.
I then took a series of photos exposing the issues and provided them with a full info and markup for each. There was silence for a couple of days and then they said they'd send me a replacement, but I opted for a refund instead.
HOWEVER. Guess what. They put the second lens back for sale as well!!! Despite all the evidence they had it was badly dysfunctional! Still as "as good as new" category!
That really pissed me off, selling broken junk to people that may not be clued up and not even be able to tell something is wrong with the lens (but maybe blame their lack of skill if new to phtoography), so I wrote a long Trustpilot review exposing their practice.
Almost immediately a customer service manager contacted me and told me they'd taken the lenses off and bla bla bla and some more bla bla bla....and here's a voucher for 10% off next purchase on our site...AS IF lady.
I have ZERO doubt they very well knew the lenses were broken, but were banking to sell them anyway. Maybe 5 people will send them back and the 6th won't. Lenses were being sold as "nearly new" or some such but in reality they needed a full repair and would probably be worth about a 100£ to someone that could repair them.
*Edit: Lenses were actually the 16-80 variant, just went and checked. I went for the tamron 17-70 (new) after the debacle and it's such an amazing lens.

Totally agree, they are hit and miss, however, they are one of the worst places to sell your gear to. Only 50%-60% market value from my experience.
I will NEVER sell my gear to a camera shop...the offers I've got in the past were ridiculous! They wanted to pay me 300€ and they had second hand models in the window for 1100€ !! not in better condition! Its a SCAM! and I'm talking about German stores and not just one! From NRW!

Ich kaufe und verkaufe fast kein aktuelles Gear gebraucht. Lohnt einfach nicht. Wenn du verkaufst, kriegst du vielleicht 60% des Neuwerts. Wenn du kaufst, kriegst meist nicht mal 20% Rabatt gegenüber Neukauf.
Vintage Gear ist natürlich was anderes.
would never trust ebay with expensive things. Facebook marketplace is also crap, professional scammers all over the place that "want to pay through paypal". That's your key to block them and move on. And other local marketplaces go to a public place with people around, a cafe or something of that nature so hit and run would be a bit more difficult.

Dont think there's ever one best way to sell, sometimes your local camera store or something like mpb do offer a competitive price, other times eBay makes far more sense, although of course there is the risk element. Also with eBay you dont get paid till a month after purchase
True! And it also depends on what you are selling. Expensive gear is usually better sold locally if possible or with reputable resellers but low budget gear can sell very well online. As a buyer things are different again.

I have always been happy with KEH. They have buyers that travel around and set up a table in a local camera store. Nice to deal with a person. They do want pristine equipment though. Any marks will greatly reduce any offer you get.
I bought a lens from them, “excellent” condition, without caps. During the few months I had it I found caps for it, then when I went to sell it back to them suddenly it’s “ugly” condition and they’re offering me 20% of what they sold it to me for. Pretty disappointing because I’d been spending a lot of money with them thinking I could trust their condition ratings. Might as well take my chances with eBay.

lol, all those you mention as "good options" always offer a bad price because they want to sell at a good price. On eBay, you can set a price in between. Let's say you want to sell a x100v:
Online store reseller offer: 1300 so they will sell at 1800
EBay: I can sell for 1600. 1499 if I'm in a rush, It will take longer and don't forget to mention that you don't accept returns. Simple
Only to prove it I quote an x100f in excellent condition at KEH and they offer 450
last week I sold one at 1100 on eBay

the reason why I stopped following "street photographers" on youtube is their lack of encouragement of people to make their youtube channels and share their street photography journey to the world. It's understandable to make their videos their own work and about themselves but they should at least encourage/inspire the viewers to make their own youtube channels. I guess they don't want competitions. I guess it's out of fear that their youtube channels eventually become irrelevant if new upcoming better youtube channels pop out. For that reason, I've unsubscribed

I personally love seeing more street photography UA-cam channels and actually always recommended UA-cam for street photographers. It's the best way to share photos online (besides websites).
