  • A few clips of Dave's engine rebuild project. He is putting the crankshaft back together and pulling the old bearings off. It's a Norton Commando Combat with the original main bearings.
As nice as the bearings feel he is going to put some Superblends on.
As you will see, the bearings came off with just a little heat and the puller/separator tool from Harbor Freight. Here's a link to the tool:

the hot air gun was a late addition to my tool set, but it is so very useful.
makes so many jobs simple, a joy.
also the "powerfile" if they still do them.

Is that the MCA Aston puller? It sure works a treat on the old-style bearings, does it grab the new "Superblend" crankshaft race as nicely as it does the race with bearings?
(PS Dave's original bearings lasted 46 years longer than mine did! :O )

Well that made short work of a difficult job.

Norton's had an issue with the primary side main bearing flogging out early.
A worn bearing causes a slight knocking sound.
Definitely replace these bearings as a matter of course if rebuilding your Norton engine.
Another issue with Norton's is delamination of the lifter pads, the bottom part of the lifter that contacts the cam.
Apparently there is an improved version of the lifters available so another area to maybe focus on while the motor is apart.
My 850 Commando just suffered the delamination of lifter pad on the LH side exhaust lifter which means stripping down the engine.
Can't find any of my Whitworth tools so need to buy new ones before I can start the repair.
Have you guys heard of this issue of the delamination of lifter pad?
Cheers and thanks for your great videos as the information is priceless.
Many British bike shops are closing down as parts dry up. I can't get new lifters anywhere in Australia so far.

Hi Ben, I'm sorry to say that Shep is still at the back of the garage! I've been so distracted with the other bikes but I do intend to get back to the project one of these days! And something else has just occurred that will be the topic of another mini-series, so it could be a while!
