Man really just showed up and became the liquid snake of rising. Memorable quotes. Incredible finale. He's a perfect metal gear solid villain with the rest of them
Armstrong is a cooky over the top strawman of conservatives in America. Liquid snake (Ocelot at the end of MGS4) represents how actual Libertarians would actually do things if we got a precious opportunity to take our country back. The government would be very small and there would be very little law compared to now. What Liquid/Ocelot actually wanted was a Constitutional Republic in the end.
something funny about Armstrong's philosophy: he's an absolute individualist and believes that might makes right, but his strength actually comes from millions of tiny machines which act together to support him. It's kind of ironic.
I think thematically the nanomachines work for Armstrong. He uses them the same way he would use his subjects. His whole deal is survival of the fittest and the strong ruling over the weak, rising to the top. In a way, his ideals are kinda fair, your own abilities and willpower decide how far in life you'd get as opposed to politics and nepotism.
Armstrong will forever be legendary, being known as the Main Villian with 30 minutes of screentime yet went down as one of the greatest characters in video game history. Nanomachines Son.
Armstrong was everything that made a villain good, good character, you need to remember all of the things you learned, and you have to pay attention thanks to the fact his attacks look very similar, 10/10 character.
Very late to the convo, but also the fact that his ideals aren't just for him to have power, it's his legitimate belief. Even when you do finally kill him, he's not angry, he's not dying with nothing achieved. His belief was that the strong should rule, and you killing him proves your stronger. You only prove his point in killing him.
Memes aside, this guy is one of my favorite video game villains, just due to how damn amazing he was with his amount of screentime. His lines, personality, the fact that he punched Raiden so hard that Metal Gear Excelsus just exploded and everything around him was burning and our thoughts about him, and that at first we think that he's another politican, evil guy or something but later realize that we are the same as this man right here we are fighting, and this song is like an apology for the fight these two have to participate in, which is basically a test who's going to survive to carve their own path and follow their beliefs with their own methods. Great game.
What I love about this conflict between Armstrong and Raiden is that it is a perfect example of Hegelian dialectics (as I understand it) Armstrong’s ideals, the thesis and Raiden’s ideals, the antithesis. Armstrong believes that might makes right and that the weak should be purged so that the strong can thrive while Raiden believes in protecting those who are less fortunate. After the battle is over Armstrong’s ideas have cleary impacted Raiden’s beliefs this is the synthesis.

This song, and that line, aren't just about the fight in the foreground between Raiden and Armstrong. They're about the game's core moral dilemma- the hypocrisy and ethics of fighting and killing to solve problems. In this line, the song spells out the conclusion Raiden, and perhaps the player, have come to after everything Revengeance has put them through: Violence is cyclical, with a tendency to spread out of control, but when you cut through all the bullshit, sometimes the stakes are too damned high, all other options have been exhausted, and violence is the last resort. In the end, we as humans are willing to fight and kill for what we believe is necessary, and no degree of education or civilization is going to remove that from the depths of our nature. In the end, we just have to be this way.
Sai wants to join the circle. "Laviolenza genera violenza, ma alla fine deve esse cosi". This song and original piano come from the solo player la lotta di-riguardano from Raidene Armstrong. @Wicker 2 it's true that there is less and less war, still violence isn't just war, just take a look at the rise of fascism around the world, many at-right militia tries to sow discent every where on the world, many workers around the world riot because of life conditions, it's not that violence is uncontrollable, but rather violence is bound to happen as long we don't work on it's root cause to reduce it to the minimum
@Wicker 2 You can't guarantee it, but that doesn't stop people from trying. Sometimes it works, but it's usually not a product of the violence itself when it does.
There's a hint of regret in the lyrics, its like both of them just realized how similar their ideals are but they've already reached the point where they have no choice but to battle each other to the death.
Seconded. Armstrong's ideal world would have had everybody be borg'd up killing machines, even as he accepted that the types of mindsets that would thrive wouldn't be particularly moralistic. Then along comes Raiden, who was heavily moralistic from the start and that didn't change since he became more metal than man. The likes of Raiden are a dream come true for Armstrong. You do understand, "Making the mother of all omelettes here, Jack! Can't fret over every egg!" was said out of *despair.* Raiden's a worthy successor to Armstrong indeed
@@hallowedbeyourdays Yup, Armstrong hated the world, and wanted to crush it all and remake it into something he could live with. He was driven to it out of sheer desperation. He could not live with himself any other way... and then here comes Saucy Jack, someone who is very much the sort of ideal person he wished everyone was like. In different circumstances, they could've been the best of friends.
Quite awesome that this whole game is about how Sam uses Raiden to take revenge on Armstrong for him So Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance , is the "Revengeance" of Samuel on Armstrong
there is that and how in the first mission raiden loses his arm and eye against sam + the president dying and he goes on to destroy the whole organization.
Armstrong: "Played college football, you know." Raiden: "At some cushy Ivy League school?" Armstrong: "Try University of Texas. Could've gone pro if I hadn't joined the Navy!"
That whole interaction was hilarious. Even how it begun: Armstrong: *adjusts glasses* "Let's go!" Raiden: "The hell are you thinking?!" Armstrong: *tackles*
Considering how the lyrics and mood of each boss theme reflected each boss' backstory and motivations, I love how damn patriotic and above all HEROIC this one sounded. You'd have been forgiven if you thought on first listening that this was one of the hero's themes.
Both see a different future as they fight, whoever wins will carry their will, if Armstrong wins, then his ideal is correct in his view, if Raiden wins, Armstrong, with his Darwinist views, shall conceed that Raiden's principles are the right ones.
such a fitting final track for this game, Raiden self-reflecting and realising he is no different than armstrong is is amazing Edit: christ this flamewar is still going on, calm the fuck down
I feel like the song is being sung through Armstrong's perspective. It just sounds more applicable since he wasn't consumed by anger completely when facing Raiden and was even cooperatively natured enough to believe Raiden's act for a moment. The song sounds like internal compromise and philosophy which Armstrong seems obsessed with.
@@sunnyd9321 "I've carved my own path" Armstrong says to Raiden in his death thros that he (Raiden) carved his own path. The song is about Raiden realizing that the whole "might makes right" method Armstrong was touting and Raiden was espousing had some truth in it. Because at the end of the day they come to clash to the death to see who will be the victor.
@@grifball94 The next line "You followed your wrath" could indicate that Armstrong saying "You carved your own path" is him realizing he was wrong about Raiden and admitting to it But I've never played the game before so what do I know?
The song is from Armstrong's perspective. He tries to understand Raiden. At the end they can't reconciliate and must fight. During the fight Armstrong realized the truth about violence and fighting. It truly had to be this way TT
@@CJ-wh7ik I feel like this song is from both perspectives, which in my opinion is also shown at the end, when they both hold their arms at each other shoulders, a gesture of mutual understanding and thaat Jack took the rule of his successor, but Armstrong has become a part of the system he wanted to destroy, so it had to die.
I think my favorite part about this all, that I've never really seen anyone else point out, is that at the very end of the game, Raiden actually took what Armstrong said to heart. He tells Boris that people are fighting for causes they don't understand or fighting for things they don't believe in... and that he has his own wars to fight. Despite all the memes, despite the fact that he lost and died, Armstrong still lives on.
Well, if you think about it, Armstrong was someone who was trying to do something crazy... _...But had some legitimately good points, and wanted to do what he thought was right for his country._
@@thegameknight8916 Of all the villains, he's one of the most noble, because he genuinely is following what he thinks is right and is doing it for his country, not just himself. He had a dream in his heart and a hope for a better world, even if his methods for achieving that would be extreme and costly, even insane. But it will be no less extreme or costly for Raiden, and in the end, even he understands this. Armstrong deserved a patriot's passing.
Not when you're "purging the weak" right? What do you know about the weak? You weren't born poor. You've never been hungry. You don't know what it's like to have to fight, steal, and kill just to survive!

You are everywhere, man.

Quite awesome that this whole game is about how Sam uses Raiden to take revenge on Armstrong for him
So Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance , is the "Revengeance" of Samuel on Armstrong
there is that and how in the first mission raiden loses his arm and eye against sam + the president dying and he goes on to destroy the whole organization.
Holy shit...someone actually figured out why it's called revengeance.
"I said my sword was a tool of justice. Not used in anger. Not used for vengeance. But now... Now I'm not so sure. And besides, this isn't my sword"

"The one who stands in the end is righteous."
it's raiden's theme
Armstrong IS the hero. The game had a sad, cynical ending with Raiden winning.

such a fitting final track for this game, Raiden self-reflecting and realising he is no different than armstrong is is amazing
Edit: christ this flamewar is still going on, calm the fuck down
I feel like the song is being sung through Armstrong's perspective. It just sounds more applicable since he wasn't consumed by anger completely when facing Raiden and was even cooperatively natured enough to believe Raiden's act for a moment. The song sounds like internal compromise and philosophy which Armstrong seems obsessed with.
@@sunnyd9321 "I've carved my own path"
Armstrong says to Raiden in his death thros that he (Raiden) carved his own path. The song is about Raiden realizing that the whole "might makes right" method Armstrong was touting and Raiden was espousing had some truth in it. Because at the end of the day they come to clash to the death to see who will be the victor.
@@grifball94 The next line "You followed your wrath" could indicate that Armstrong saying "You carved your own path" is him realizing he was wrong about Raiden and admitting to it
But I've never played the game before so what do I know?
