The other rock and roll mayhem event of 1979 happened in December when a stampede during a concert in Cincinnati, Ohio by The Who resulted in the deaths of 11 people. In my estimation, what "killed" disco was disco itself, as record companies began to churn out product without much regard for quality control and the songs began to all sound the same. Disco really took off in 1977 with the movie Saturday Night Fever and the music industry responded quickly by shifting towards the new dance music. In some cities, like the one I lived in, the leading rock radio stations changed their format to disco overnight and angered and alienated listeners in the process. In response, other stations changed their format to rock to pick up new listeners, but those stations often ran at higher frequencies where the signals weren't as clear or as powerful. Rock fans weren't happy, but it took some time for their frustrations to turn into mini-riots like that one. And 1979 was also the year that the "New Wave" began to arrive, pushing aside disco and hard rock. So ultimately, both genres began to fade in popularity.

Basically, many people were just sick of hearing disco by that time. Even bigger name pop/rock bands had started to play disco/disco-like music. Folks wanted their rock 'n roll .

So strange behavior! If you don't like a particular music genre...just don't listen to it!! The beauty with music is, among other things, all different styles. We all have different tastes!

Thank you so much Mpwa Fay! ❤❤❤❤ I know this isn't the kind of thing you usually react to. But I was thinking that all of us old guys needed something to argue about. 😁
Truth right now, I liked many disco songs. So did my friends. But we were known as rockers and back then we would never admit that disco did anything but suck.
Now, just about everybody that is on disco's side will say that we were racists, homophobic, whatever nasty thing, all kinds of mean nasty things, I mean, we'll be put on the group W bench and have to explain ourselves. Especially people who weren't even born by 1979. Because they don't know what was really going on.
    It was class warfare.
To go to a disco, you had to pay a cover charge. Then you got in and found out you couldn't afford the drinks. Then you saw all these 30+ something old dudes hitting on and picking up people our age. They had money for drinks. They were handing out cocaine. We didn't stand a chance!
That is what we were really angry about. They were taking our girls, or guys!
A rock concert in 1979? About $8. And pot was essentially free.
My friends and I were on the way to Disco Demolition Night when we realized we were already too drunk and stoned to drive. So, we pulled over at a small-town park and made other plans. I barely recall, but I think we ended up at a late night showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Thanks again for providing some history for young folks who think disco was like the thing everybody was into. Folks, for a good look at those days, I suggest watching the movie, "Detroit Rock City".

Thanks for sharing this, I think after reading this, it's right to say that some people like myself enjoy exploring different music genres while others narrow down to one or two. Also, the war wasn't that Disco was bad but rather a class warfare, thanks fir shedding some light on this. As I always say, music is a universal language, and no genre is superior to the other, and they should all be enjoyed by everyone regardless of their class, race, or gender. Thanks for the movie suggestion, I'll be sure to check it out 💯

for me it was the overplaying of SNF even though I thought the songs were okay - non-stop playing on the radio in 1978. I was against burning of records just like I am against burning books..

I was a kid living in the Chicago suburbs at the time this happened. It seemed like racist white hard rock/heavy metal types were hell bent on destroying club music associated with black, latino and gay culture. The radio station that promoted this was a classic rock/heavy metal station. Disco was coming to an end by this point. It limped along for a couple of more years and then morphed into mainstream post-disco stuff [Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, etc.].

It was all about racism...a lot of people will come after me and try to deny it, but it was all about late 70's-1980's racism, because music they considered as black was taking over the world!!!

You mean soul, blues, rock, were racist? I'm not coming after you, but I suggest you take a look at the Billboard Top 100 for each month in the late sixties and on up to the mid 70's and all the hits that had to do with rights and freedoms. Can you explain those songs, and those artists, to me?
See, the way this works is if you make a statement, you should be prepared to defend it.

It wasn't all about that, but that was definitely some of it and still is today as some of the "anti-woke" remarks attest. If people don't like being awake, they should go back to sleep and let the rest of us get on with treating each other with dignity and respect.
