I am so relieved to learn that Portuguese people like to complain. In my short stint as an exotic dancer and fado singer in a small bar, I used to hear bitter complaints all the time. My take was that Venger was simply complaining about trendiness in gaming, and he didn't invent the term he used. It wasn't directed at Kelsey specifically. But so many people are treating it like a sacred cow that can't be criticized. Some of that motivation comes, like you said, from people who have a vested interest in making things FOR Shadowdark. "Why are you shooting at the wheels of our bandwagon?!" I get it. But whatever you do should be able to withstand criticism, or else you fall into the "Words are Hurtful!" safe space cadet camp.
I bought Shadowdark. I even bought third-party things I may never use for it, unless I repurpose them for a different game. The aesthetic was really nice. The book was sturdy. I played it exactly once. It had some cool ideas. Some things were not implemented well. The lights-out mechanic gets old fast, with the conceit that no species can see in the dark, there's no real Light spell and carrying hooded lanterns is a hanging offense. (I'm oversimplifying.) That being said, it's still a valid framework to run a DnDish game. It benefited from good timing and a tidal wave of praise heaped on it before it was released. I must be strange, because I base my opinion on a crowdfunding project by what the creator tells me about it, not someone paying the bills with UA-cam clicks. I've bought some RPG industry equivalents of pet rocks before. Some were good. Some were not. This one fell under, "Pretty Cool But Not Something I'd Run Frequently." And I even invested in Mörk Borg, largely due to some stellar 3rd party content made for it. In that respect, Shadowdark and its creator have done a lot to encourage that sort of thing, so that's to be respected.
Fast-forwarding past who said what to whom afterward, all I'll say is the hobby, like the real world, is way too divisive over expressions of opinion. Tell a non-TTRPGer that some of the people you like got into a tiff over who does elves better and they'll say, "Jeez, you people really need to get lives." If anything, we should all reserve our ire for Wizards of the Coast. Their execs probably laugh whenever the people in the indie community have a feud. They know it's time not spent on dethroning them by making cool stuff.
I will say though that I have friends my age who are veterans of the hobby but still flock to certain things that get all the hype. They wouldn't know a Pundit or many other people from a hole in the wall if I didn't say, "Hey! Check out this thing!" I think what we really need is better sources of game representation that go beyond a guy reviewing advance copies he would never pay for otherwise and paid ads that some indie creators just can't afford. Even the crowdfunding sites themselves will highlight something or boost it, ensuring equally worthy projects don't find the same audience.
I don't begrudge Shadowdark from getting attention, but honestly it's not the greatest thing since sliced bread and didn't reinvent the wheel. And ENnies? ENnies have zero legitimacy, just like the Nobel prize or Oscars these days. Many fantastic games will never, ever see one. It's nice to see someone get recognized, but it's cheapened when many aren't considered or can't fairly compete. It's like a dude winning a gold medal in women's Olympic boxing..
Any indie creators who put themselves out there but may not be the cool kid on the block or flavor of the week should be allowed to vent a bit. It takes a lot to put yourself out there and follow your vision. Sometimes it pays off. Sometimes you crash and burn. But the people buying need to make lnformed choices not based on hype alone and see what's out there, otherwise they'll think things like Candela Obscura are awesome.. 😬 Man, even the TITLE didn't make sense.
Maybe Venger should have called it, "The Candela Obscuring of the hobby."

      @TheRedRoomChannel  14 днів тому +1

Facts! Many creators make games to be bought first and played maybe. I've watched the OSR community get excited for so many new " this is it games " just to move on to the next " this is it game " as soon as sales start to fall. Don't trust any RPG influencer. It's 90% an industry level con. If you pay very close attention, you will notice that most RPG UA-camrs actually tell you very little about the game they're reviewing. Until you actually play Shadowdark, you cannot judge it clearly. It has a reputation as a dungeon crawling game, but I am in political campaign with a lot of overland travel, wars between armies, and now aerial combat. Most of your criticisms are just based on the game's reputation after people take a casual look at it. You can easily play any type of campaign you want with Shadowdark, just like in D&D or Pathfinder. The difference is the rules are smooth, uncluttered, well-organized and easy to understand. Combat is swift, not a slog like 5E D&D. A battle can be finished in minutes instead of hours. Only the core mechanic of rolling d20, using upward AC progression, and employing advantage and disadvantage were taken from 5E, it was just a skeleton that the rest of the game was built on. Kelsey Dionne has never made any political "woke" statements, and there is nothing political in the game at all. Any assumptions about her politics are based on her sexual preference and marital status, not on anything she has said or written. It is better organized, easier to run, easier to play, and more exciting to play than 5E. As far as being a professional game designer, Kelsey was designing adventures for several years before she even started working on Shadowdark. She was a player from the age of 12 and grew up around TSR staff. Her first DM worked at TSR for Gygax. Marketing? Her wife does marketing for a living. She paid for ONE review of Shadowdark by Questing Beast who charges for the time it takes to make a video on UA-cam to do a review. Professor Dungeon Master and other influencers who supported her did it because they liked her work. If you are mad because she is doing so well, hate the player, not the game...

The Red Room may not like the art, but the majority of people do love the art. Take a look at all of the initial Kickstarter comments and every other person was raving about the artwork. Yeah, been watching dozens of videos to find anything interesting or different about it. Even watched a live play. Seemed exactly like normal 5e game. Except lower hp. It's a small collection of house rules overinflated into "a new system". Happy for the creator. But, pet rocks were all the rage sometime in the past. So... anything can make money if marketed correctly.
Shadowdark is all marketing and very little substance.

  • @Egad

If you are a 5e fan you will probably not like Shadowdark. It's more oldschool where your character is not very powerful. It's also trimmed down without all the feats and skills. If you like TTRPG on hardmode then you should try Shadowdark. Just make sure to roll up more than one character for when your first one dies.

these developers publish OSR material, I strongly disagree with their preference for AI art as even in their products it looks like instagram filter art over a photograph slop, but these are rpg game devs with their own indie systems, they don't need a very basic sales pitch of what old school roleplaying is.

I agree. Funny she brags about the layout because honestly the layout is one of the worst parts of the book. I bought the book along with Ben Milton’s Knave2e and honestly Ben’s book is clearly done better. Sure defenders of Kelsey will point out that she didn’t have professional publishers. But honestly the layout is amateur. And it shows. Looks like someone’s work from a Highschool course. The font choices are also terrible. It’s all over the map and inconsistent with a mix of gothic fonts, horror fonts and HELVETICA or some other sort of boring MS Word sans serif font. Shows its lack of professionalism. She does not deserve the Ennie for layout for sure. Shows the system is rigged.

Having played plenty of 5E, mostly in the 1st 5 or 6 years of the product, I can say they are not the same. You still have the roll over D20 mechanic but it resembles a basic/expert style of game more than anything. This is not an endorsement of Shadowdark, but, from a purely mechanics point of view you would definitely not have the same game experience as a 5E game. I'm actually unsure if it would even support long-term play RAW.

Criticism should always be fact-based and comparing be made always on actual examples. I see your point but at the same time I got the impression that you both overreact, too. The Ennies are, at best, a popularity contest. But besides that over the years there have been a number of scandals related to bad behavior from the judges, etc.
You're also right that certain people could never possibly win an Ennie now, excepting by pushing very hard on the one that is only by popular vote. The last person who won an Ennie was Zak S, and they made sure after that that it would never happen again.

SD Got no particiuluar thoughts about it, other than its another Fantasy concept, she put a lot work into it, and good on her, if she paid folks for reviews fair do's..... Will I be buying it no it's V expensive due to all the black ink. Got lots of fantasy stuff cant warrant buying it and The way people have flocked to it, is all a bit Mork Borg. As for the quick start is pretty hefty it's more of a large Start. at just under 140 pages. Index Card RPG had done a great take on Rules and concepts, and it's affordability is agreeable . The Black Hack has all sorts of folks using that, and from what I've seen of Johnathan Rowe's offerings have been excellent. As for K.D being Woke More than likely. That's her purgative, but plenty of games are falling by the wayside due to the authors , Eenies are a joke anyway, it might help sales a bit, but the fact that it was on K.S made more of difference in profits. Interested if SD has longevity or if its just fad. Folks bought it because it mentioned 5E and OSR in the same breath. Again good on her.

My take about the overly defensive fans: It sounds like the annoying blue-haired Sword Dream freaks finally found their corner of the OSR.
Personally, I like the old school type art. But the thing is, when I saw the Shadowdark KS my first thought was "I already have this". If you are a fan of DCC or OSE (I like OSE because Necrotic Gnome stays out of politics) you didn't need this. Oh well, I guess it's good that Stephan Poag keeps getting work.
Bottom line: These highly produced slick products that pop up seemingly out of nowhere seem more aimed at people who collect books rather than play the game. I'd rather keep supporting the product lines I've already been supporting, plus the non-woke indies like you and Pundit.

This is not a defense of Shadowdark, but this was not a product that popped up out of nowhere. She's been writing content for 5E for years and built a WOTC fanbase who were her primary market for this game. It's clear if you have been aware of her gaming brand, The Arcane Lubrary, who this game was for. It may be a different style than the 5E crowd typically plays but that's mostly who bought it.

Or at the very least, it's pretty clear what side they're on. And I don't care about any of that. What bothers me, is being told that this thing was just being hyped up organically by our own community. And that is just such a good product, you really need to buy this one. This is the Magic Bullet for your osr needs. I don't need this product, and I just don't buy what they're selling.
