John Badham on BLUE THUNDER

- John Badham recalls the making of his rip-roaring action picture featuring some of the craziest urban helicopter action yet seen onscreen, as overseen by veteran pilot and aerial coordinator James C. Gavin. Malcolm McDowell, playing the villain, conquered his longstanding fear of flying long enough to go aloft for the loopy attack helicopter sequences. His obvious discomfort goes beyond the level of performance into the realm of Real Trouper-ism.

Love. Love. Love Roy Scheider. The man was in some of the very best films for over a decade and never seems to get any credit.
I wish John would start making thrillers like this again, he made such great movies.
One of the greatest action flicks of all time. Great characters and premise, beautifully filmed, and one of my all time favourite scores, by Arthur B. Rubinstein.
This movie is, to a much larger extent than other movies, driven by music.
Also, it's incredibly influential. There are echoes of it all over later films, especially those by James Cameron.
But still, no one has ever managed to top it.
Superb movie 👌👌👌
i guess Im randomly asking but does anyone know a trick to get back into an instagram account..?
I was dumb forgot the account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me
Badham = awesome. Thanks for doing this one.
This was a fantastic film and its just one of those films you'll never forget. It was so ahead of its time and the story is excellent as well as the acting and and action scenes.
One of Roy's best performances.
This movie was absolute GOLD.
Love Trailers From Hell. John Badham is a great director, very under rated. His commentaries like the majority of his films are excellent. Blue Thunder is one of the best action films of the 80's. I saw the film on video as 15 year old and still love it now nearly 30 years later.
Maybe Badham is under rated, but when I was growing up in the late 1970's/early 1980's his name was known in connection with his films - not just the films being hits, but he being the director of these successful films, although I suppose that also depended on people taking an active interest in films, instead of just watching them.
35 years later now.
Saw this at the theater with a bunch of friends, We all liked it!
Flawed but fun. Malcolm McDowell has the most fun portraying a "large ham". Marvellous
I just finished watching this. It was great. Plenty of action. Very fun movie.
Loved this movie when I saw it as a kid
Sir, this is one of the very best movie about helicopters I've ever seen. My best regards!
I absolutely love BLUE THUNDER, an underrated Classic & Roy Scheider is excellent in it. Great film & Scheider is a movie legend
Loved "Blue Thunder", "Fire Fox", & "Air Wolf". I would checkout a "Blue Thunder" reboot.
Blue Thunder remake? Sony's got one in the works.
I say leave it alone. The Hollywood of today would only muck it up. The entertainment business needs to start creating their own new original ideas instead of latching onto great ideas from the past instead of poorly made remakes. The world needs new great ideas for the future! Blue Thunder's a classic....leave it alone, enjoy it and move on.
I say use it as a template and make a spiritual successor
R.I.P Roy... Catch ya later! Brilliant line!
Great commentary! Thank you for sharing John!
My favorite aviation movie
This was a great Big Brother meets aviation movie...a fine entertainment.
"Welcome to Air Support!"
Fuck yeah!
Great movie, have seen it many times.
I've never seen that cut scene at 2:46. Good thing they cut it. It would have been ridiculous that Frank's girlfriend would have skills like a stunt driver.
Ah, cut scene. That makes sense. I was like 'I don't remember seeing her do that in the movie.'
I DO remember that car stunt from multiple viewings of my old recorded VHS tape. Years later when the DVD was released, I remember thinking back then "something's missing here". Seeing Kate jumping over a police car isn't too far fetched after seeing her driving through traffic like a pro, just seconds before that 😄
"Catch you later" !

PLEASE Digitally Remaster "DEADLY ENCOUNTER" 1982 with Larry Hugman and "BIRDS of PREY" 1973 with David Janssen.
Please make it on Blue-RAY FHD.
I love Helicopters !
That's when movie's AWESOME
Well said.
This and FIREFOX from the previous year with Clint Eastwood kicked off the tech hero phase of 80’s television such as KNIGHT RIDER, AIRWOLF and of course STREET HAWK!!!

And 'Alex' was in it. Catch ya later.
