Eastman, and that's surprising against these two guitars. But that's a great looking guitar, too.

I have an Eastman T486 semi-hollowbody. This SB59 has a particular tonal character that I can hear in my guitar as well. I think it's in the lower mids-a deep, warm, woody resonance. I also heard it playing an SB55 in a local shop. It's subtle, but there is a unique Eastman character that seems to carry through their models.

bought and sold lots of guitar in last 15 years...and to date, the T486 has been the most impressive... Got a SB59 Goldtop coming in a few days...can't wait to be wowed again.

I really like the pickups in the Eastman I think the Gibson would sound better if it had the pearly gates pickups in it.

I absolutely love the Eastman, for the tone, build quality and price they can’t be beaten, BUT. They Teye left me wanting to hear so much more....I gotta have one of those!

Great comparison Sasha! The Standard 50s just had beautiful creamy clarity on the neck pickup that wasn't matched (I want it so bad!!). The Teye's variety of tone and the overall look is incredible though. Following them for a number of years and their guitars are like a piece of art!

eastman for me. was really surprised. but all are great guitars though. i guess it all depends on the player's choice of sound and feel. great comparison. cheers!

Thanks for this - I am still just getting up to speed on the Eastman line. Between the Gibson & Eastman, based on what I hear (good headphones) I would go for the Eastman. Neck more open, more harmonics in evidence, Middle both lovely, Bridge Eastman had a little more 'heft', a bit less brittle. Obviously both are lovely instruments, could happily own both, but the Eastman does stand out for me. Various other 'influencers' on UA-cam seem to agree, or at least are pleasantly surprised by what these guys are doing. The other Max clip with the Romeo Single Coil Neck & Bridge PAF was a bit of a revelation! Thanks again. The third guitar sounded terrific but more of a collectors item IMHO - as a working musician a bit rich for me :)

I'm loving the color of the Gibson it's my favorite color burst but the Eastman is on point and I'm digging the distressed look. I'll take one Gibson and one Eastman but I'd like the Eastman to be a iced tea or tobacco burst.

Is it just me or is the Eastman wider, I've heard great things about those Les Paul killers lol

The Eastman has a one piece neck, there are no ears of wood glued to either side of the headstock as with the Gibson, the inlays are Mother of Pearl vs Pearloid plastic on the Gibson, the pots are CTS and the jack is Switch Crraft, the varnish finish has mojo by the bucket full! The headsock is a 1/8" overlay of ebony that is hand cut, fitted and finished not paint, the truss rod cover also ebony not plastic. The pickups are custom wound for the Eastman by Lollar and are truly about as PAF tone as there is. If the Eastman had an American birth certificate it would cost $4k plus.. hand rubbed varnish not a spray gun.. it is a truly hand built guitar. I have both a LP Standard and a SB59v.. the LP made in America was only $200 more than the one made in Beijing and you certainly are NOT paying extra $$$ for the name with Eastman in America ..do the math, it's a truly amazing guitar.

What is the neck profile on the Eastman? It's impossible to find this information - at least in a way that makes sense to me. I never got on with the Gibson 50s neck profile. The Eastman looks much slimmer whenever I've seen it held in profile for a second or two on a UA-cam video. Due to supply and demand it doesn't seem likely that my local guitar shop will have these in stock; I'm reluctant to purchase one without trying it beforehand. Any help would be appreciated.

I totally agree with all but the American b.c., probably closer to $8k & I highly doubt Gibson does French polishing even through the custom shop.

Totally agree with you, played the SB59 at our local shop, the craftsmanship is insane for the price. If it were made in the US, it would be priced like a PRS, just flawless. Still ended up buying a Gibson 50s standard though, to my ears, the Eastman didn't quite replicate the tone of a Les Paul. It lacked that mid bight/agressiveness, and the high chirpiness of a Les Paul which I've always wanted. My new 50s Les Paul is at the shops luthier funnily enough, getting set up. The nut slots were terribly filed, and were higher than my crappy old first acoustic guitar. Kind of unacceptible at this price point. QC is just absolutely terrible at Gibson. If it weren't for their tone and legacy, I wouldn't touch their instruments.

Eastman sounded better overall by far. More sustain, more clarity, less muffled. And your playing seemed to unconsciously be more aware of those features and enjoy it more 😁. To be fair to the Gibson, the comparison should have been done with the SB59, as this one is a SB59/v. Big difference. The third guitar sounded dry and quacky.

I can’t be the only one who thought the third guitar sounded best? My least favorite in terms of aesthetics, but the tone was something else.

Honestly l liked the tone of the neck pick up, but no..it was totally different from the Les Paul.. and folks are a bit bias when it comes to their LPs!

The Eastman has an ebony fretboard while the gibson has a rosewood fretboard. Hard to compare. Ebony gives more definition. Rosewood like maple more attack.
I like rosewood better on a les paul.

There is nothing like Gibson, sorry. Much more attack, clarity and dynamics. It's a shame we have not cheaper alternative for the sound of the rosewood fingerboard.
