"In the year 1917, AlphaGo played sixty games against top human players." I now have the premise of my new breakthrough Scifi novel. Thank you Michael Redmond!
Thank you very much for your video. My hobby is playing the igo, and I am studying ENGLISH now, although I am Japanese. I can enjoy to learn both of IGO and ENGLISH at the same time , thus I am very happy!
Thank you for sharing these videos. So many “GO teachers” just show game play without actually explaining the logic behind the moves. You do such a great job of actually showing the variations and explaining the value in each move. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Beginner here, very interested in this game -- wish I would have discovered it sooner, I am kind of long in the tooth, so I don't know much about Go, but I can say, as a beginner, your commentary and lesson were well-paced and ideas conveyed so that I felt connected to your message. Thank you very much, I am grateful to you.
The caligraphy behind by Go Seigen really caught my attention. "克己复礼为仁”, this is Confucius's wisdom, loosely translated to restraining oneself to be civilized is humanity.
Thank you for this elegant video. I appreciate that it is shorter and covers a few variations while explaining the reasoning for choosing one variation over another. This seems more useful that being overloaded with many variations at once and yet you can create other videos that do cover more involved variations and reasoning, if you choose to.
As a player who likes to attack, I am overjoyed that direct 3-3 invasions became the hype. Especially when people without superhuman invasion and reduction skills play it against me, please keep doing this everyone. ;-)
So excited to see this! I know I'm a little late to the party, but we all appreciate your ability to take this quarantine and turn it into and opportunity to create this content. Thank you. :)
Great video, I love your sharp analysis and breakdown of board positions! I've enjoyed all your videos that I've watched (which is quite a few) on the AGA youtube, and am looking forward to getting to learn more from your content here!
I'm really stoked for this channel! Can't wait to see what sort of content you're gonna upload in the future! Always thought you were a great commentator both in English and Japanese.
Great! As a beginner I felt like I understood everything (pbb not in-depth but you can't have it all!) and that makes me feel great about learning. Let's go and test it on OGS now ;)
In older books (1970s/80s), the player with the outside position (say black) in the double-hane variation is often shown playing an atari from the outside, then atari again against the ponuki after white captures, rather than taking the corner. The idea seems to be to build an outside wall in sente, rather than in gote as with the simple extension. I haven't seen this variation mentioned in any of the post-AlphaGo 3-3 discussions. Was it already considered obsolete before that? I'm curious why professionals decided it was inferior.
@@MichaelRedmondsGoTV Thanks for the reply! That's about what I figured. I've enjoyed your AGA videos immensely, by the way. Your commentary is clear and insightful, and you provide nice insight into the human side of professional-level play.
Great video. I would have liked more details on why the direct invasion is actually a good move. It seems to give black the complete choice of direction.
The direct 3-3 was not considered a good move until the AIs demonstrated that it works. When the greatest players in history didn't get it, it is still difficult to spell out why it is good.
I would suggest going more in depth into the variations, for example how to counter early pincers to the Simple Extension, and importantly, the tsuke response to the knight.... That one is extremely common in SDK + range and should have been mentioned!
At 4:53, why don't you mark the point right above 1 as an option? And then you can try to disconnect the white stones and reduce the territory in the corner? And you always say things like "this is okay" or "this is good" but you never explain WHY this is. Makes it very hard to learn and understand.
I've been studying a lot of the master variations including this one. Most modern players will use dual 4.4 points which In my opinion makes the direct 3.3 invasion very strong. My question though is can you.still create an invasion with with context of more stones such to jump into the 3.3 as black into whites bottom left corner (referring to the 4.4 of white in conjunction with whites shimari) thanks as always.
I think you mean the LL corner in the example game for the simple extension variation. Invadind at the 3-3 after playing the approach move is also a valid joseki, you have to remember and understand a different sequence of moves. Maybe I should cover that in a video sometime.
Thanks Michael. What an inspiring video!! I'm double digit Kyu Player. After i watch this video. I have Questions : 1. Is it fair to say that start the opening with 4-4 is not really good? because the 3-3 invasion will coming after. And if i'm not mistaken, the 3-3 invasion mostly bad for the player who begin with 4-4 point. 2. For a Beginner like me, is it wise enough for not playing the 3-3 invasion early? Because i think it's hard to handle the thickness of the opponent's wall :D
Pros still like to play the star point and with computer programs the score tends to stay stable with the 3-3 point invasion so I would say go ahead and play the star point.
Google had a super computer and Deepmind had a highly gifted team working on AlphaGo, and I think we don't know everything about it. Katago, Leela and the others are being updated and getting better all the time, so lets be honest and say I don't know

Very nice lecture, especially seeing examples of real games demonstrating the theory.

Perfect commentary! Great and understandable explanations that all levels can understand. Great video!

we had already decided that the final atari was not sente, and the loss in territory was too big

Hi Michael When are you putting up the video on the Knights move variations. Thanks

At 5:36, why can't W play a move like O16?
That was an option, but Black's right side area had a lot of space, making it difficult for White to win when comparing size.
Most useful, thank you.
What does he mean by the year 1917?
Have u considered reviewing some of the 60 AG Master vs Pro games? I'm really enjoying the AG vs AG series with Chris Garlack.

What if black tenukis after 3-3? Does white continue to build in the corner or do they tenuki as well and wait for black to come back to defend?
White can crawl on the 3rd line to have a local advantage.

To play or not to play the 3-3 is something that is not easy to say and depends on your style and the board position
Really appreciate your answer. Thanks Michael 🙏🏻😄
