  • How to Federalize, and Water Watermelon Plants Properly so your watermelon plants do not Split, get blossom end rot or are Underdeveloped.
    I grow two watermelon crops a year, one in Spring and one in the Fall.
    It is very important to Water and Fertilize your Watermelons Properly. under fertilized watermelons can lead to end rot, under-watering your watermelon plants will lead to splitting when it rains.
    it's true, if you underwater your melons, they will be water deprived then when it rains they will suck up to much water all at once and split.
    I use pelletized limestone, 10-10-10, plus water six gallon daily. using my venturi fertilizer injector. in this video I show and explain how often, how much and how to.

    You should not be adding lime unless your soil pH is too low as it raises soil pH and continuously adding it can cause your pH to be to high to grow successfully. You should use calcium nitrate instead.

      that's not from watering, I live in Florida, and here the commercial growers water 4-5 gallons a day along with liquid fertilizer. watering makes them mature faster and keeps them hydrated. watermelons require lots of fertilizer. I give them liquid fertilizer. water and fertilizer properly and you will have a nice harvest every time.

      Calcium deficient lack water could also cause bloosom end rot. I noticed with ot more natural rain ater, my peppers stop dropping blossom, this was after I added calcium and other fertilizers.

      @@TheFrugalHugelGardener I'm trying watermelon for the first time this summer. Is that 4 to 5 gallons a day per plant? Thanks in advance. I have been watering 2-3 gallons/day and noticed the leaves wilt during the afternoon heat but recover within 30 mins after more watering. Was deathly afraid of overwatering as seed packet reccomends 2" water/week.

      That's good. Better than getting a sudden supply of water after a drought. It's like over drinking whenever you're thirsty.

    Six gallons of water ? Per plant per day?

    • @TheFrugalHugelGardener
      @TheFrugalHugelGardener  Рік тому +3

      Yes, I learned from a commercial water melon grower that grows and ships to the big box stores. water melons are 99% water, and will grow faster and larger with that amount, and will not split even with lots of rain.

      Another channel claims that water on the leaves cools the plant and retards growth even suggesting that rain retard the growth Is there any vilitity to that advise?

      Oh my God... that's an insane amount of water.... I give 1 gallon of water to my Crimson Sweet watermelons twice a week... My entire garden is covered with a thick layer of wood chips...
