We retired from Canada to Aveiro a year ago and LOVE it. We can walk to everything. An abundance of services , restaurants etc.. It is a very vibrant, clean safe small city with a small town feel. We love the north as well as we find the food better. The weather for us is pefect, 25 C in the summmer with a nice breeze, comfortable in the winter, beach is 10 minutes away ( Costa and Barra) , less than an hour to Porto, 30 minutes to Coimbra, one hour 15 minutes to Nazare, 2 hours to Lisbon.
We are very very happy here. XPats feel free to reply.

The fact that it's often called "the Venice of Portugal" doesn't help in describing this town. It's a cool place if you like Art Nouveau buildings, and it's home to one of Portugal's most iconic brands: Vista Alegre. It's also where most bicycles in the EU are made.

I dont know if you mentioned but it has its own University, so any city with University in Portugal has student movement, I mean not all the cities have Universities, so it has along with it all students that como from the entire country to study there , so renting rooms and apartments is a thing you see and that pushes its own bussiness... the University is good , high level, my brother graduated in there , today he is a top scientist teaching in a university in washigton DC in the US in a college of medicine and also he is a fellow, for people who dont know to be a fellow scientist you are in the top 5% of that specific area in the world for sure....
    Great video....

I loved Aveiro when I visited. Sometimes I think I should have moved there and saved a lot of money on rent versus Cascais.

    • @kathyw9439
      @kathyw9439 Рік тому

Husband and I are targeting the north but our move will coincide with our son who is looking at Nova SBE in Carcavelos. Thinking it might make sense to all live together near the university (inland, within 5k) for our first year, but starting to wonder if it actually saves any $…looking around at rental sites looks like double the rent. Is it pricey everywhere along the Cascais-Lisbon train line?

@@kathyw9439 I live like a 20 minute walk from city center and pay €2250.00 for a 3/2. According to my neighbors I’m paying too much but I’ve been on various real estate sites and it seems average for the area.

We loved Cascais, too! Yes, price is a consideration. Not sure if we would be able to afford it. We loved the entire stretch between Estoril and Cascais. But if the north is calling, we really loved the feel of Aveiro.

Maybe it's the openness you mentioned, but when we stopped in Aveiro, we fell in love with it. Charming, relaxed, lots of green space. It felt very comfortable for everyday lifestyle. It's pretty high on our list of places we would consider moving to. So glad you highlighted it!

We are so happy to have chosen Aveiro as our new home! We walk everywhere - rarely use our car - and there is plenty to do here. It’s also very walkable. (Most cities in Portugal are very hilly.) Our neighbors are all Portuguese and have been so kind. Great places to eat all over the city. We love it here.

We like Aveiro, but of all the many cities we visited during our whirlwind tour in 2021, it was one of our few nos to “expat that.” Moliceiros are wonderful, there’s a lot of charm in the walking areas around the canals and there’s a great free bike program. We prefer to be in a warmer spot, which is why we are focusing on Funchal (which we love) and Madeira.

Good to know our target areas mirror yours (your top 3): an hour north and south of Porto, close to the coast. Details on cost of living are much appreciated! One more thing, I’ve also read that bike lanes are plentiful and with it being relatively flat it’s a good alternative form of transportation.

The parking sounds similar to Amsterdam. There is very little street parking available. So, most people park their car in a garage nearby. There it is readily available for trips out of town, but not needed on a daily basis.

There's the codfish festival in the summer, also just outside of Aveiro. Water sports at the beach. There are many events and shows to attend. There's museums and parks to check out. And of course excellent food and pasteries to eat! Hope you get a chance to spend some more time here soon!

Since Averio is a college town, there might be more English speakers? I plan to learn PT Portuguese, but man, the different pronunciations for s's, and o's! Is it easier to find European Portuguese dictionaries and language books in Portugal? Most of the books in USA are for Brazilian Portuguese.

Very common in Spain and Portugal, basically a set lunchtime menu, 3 courses with wine or coffee. There's normally a sandwich board outside the venue with a list of 3 or 4 options per course, for you to mix and match. Nothing fancy, but usually good basic local dishes, generous portions, and very economical at €8-14 for everything.

07:13 the Football team "Beira-Mar" was much better like 20 years ago, usually in the first league.
Then they built a new stadium outside the city, they lost a lot of money and purchasing power, as well as an unatractive place for the public, and basically they went bankrupt and started geting worst.
But latelly, 2 or 3 years ago they started playing again in their old stadium in the city center, atracting more public. The Region of Aveiro often has 2 teams in the first league, if not Beira-Mar

Hello, We are retired Americans (I still teach online) traveling through Porto (Feb 22-28) on our way back to Portland, Oregon. Maybe Aveiro???
Our journey began in Lviv helping a new school open. We left Ukraine on December 15 for Krakow. Visited Gdansk- beautiful!! We will travel to Tallinn, Estonia staying Jan 30-Feb 20.
From Tallinn, we will fly to Porto. During our stay in Porto, we hope to see the city and maybe begin the Expat move there. Which Airbnb do you recommend? We prefer near the "old town" feel.
    Thank you! Dean & Cindy

Somebody help me out with this question. Is it true that long-term apartment rentals are hard to find in Portugal? I have heard that all the property owners want to due short-term renting to jack their prices up during tourist season. If I am retiring there I don't want to have to move every six months, or whatever it is. Is it just in touristy areas? Surely it's not the whole country! How about an interior town in the Algarve?

@@ExpatsEverywhere It's nothing like Venice, although!... after visiting Venice I kinda got a very similar feeling as to be in Aveiro. Both are in flat lands, in a Lagoon (Venice literally inside, Aveiro by the Lagoon).
If you go to the social housing in Venice, near where's the Biennal, you'll notice some similarities also. Christmas decoration lights, the pavement, the small parks, the small trees, the material with wichi they build. And no, Aveiro doesn´t have Gondolas. Those boats are called Moliceiros, and were repurposed for tourism. They were actually used to collect sea weed from the Lagoon.
Aveiro is more like Venezia Mestre, with it's industries nearby. In Cacia, the outskirst of Aveiro there's one of the largest paper factories - the Navigator company (totally green washing company..... anyway).
For me the uniqueness of Aveiro though, is that it's like a Kaleidoscope, or a jigsaw, always changing, always adapting, it has a vibe like an M.C. Escher drawing. With many new buildings, Art Deco, old buildings, always with cranes or construction / rebuilding sites. The water is maybe like a shape-shifting engine.
In Aveiro I get vibes from a lot of other different disparate european cities, like Berlin, Venice, Prague, Amsterdam, Bristol, even to some Finland places during Summer and the equinoxes

If anyone goes to Aveiro expecting Venice, they will be disappointed. As Kaylie says, you need to value Aveiro on its own merits.

It is no longer convenient to move to Portugal. The prices of flats in flat blocks are the same as in Italy. Wages in Portugal are starving, very low, like in Italy. Taxes are slowly being raised, which was the REAL convenience of moving to Portugal. This message will probably be deleted, but it will surely be read by those who post videos about Portugal.
