I imagine many people buy these little piggies thinking they take little or no care. I think, perhaps, they are bought because they are small and their owners don’t realize they do require attention, clean cages, food, bathing and checking their little bodies over. At redfog42 These animals are herbivores which means in nature they are "prey" animals. Like all species, their fundamental roles in nature are to occupy their place on the food chain in their native environment and to reproduce. If they live long enough to reproduce and have a sufficient number of their progeny survive; then, they have fulfilled nature's mandate and these problems of maintenance are not likely to interfere with that mandate. Further, also like any species in the wild; when an affliction becomes debilitating, something eats it. So, in answer to your question, they don't.
My boy Toffee disagrees with not cleaning the "boar pocket". Toffee was diagnosed with a yeast infection in his mouth and in his pocket. If we didn't clean his pocket the infection would have spread
Yes if they have a condition, like this little fellow then yes it needs to be monitored and done, however take a look at this fellow here ua-cam.com/video/amUW0WIBG48/v-deo.html and how he completely recovered from the most severe impaction here ua-cam.com/video/Fvnq2I24REA/v-deo.html as an example of how to help them. Yeast infections are treatable but take time. Think of it a little like laxatives in that people can become use to using them and then need more and more of them in order to 'go'. However when they are removed, they become constipated as their system has become use to it. We have to treat impaction a little the same way and become less and less invasive and more careful with diet, movement and water intake in order for them to return to a normal method of dropping pellets. In this way checking becomes less frequent as they start to improve. Hope this helps.
How many day will it take for impaction to clear? Our piggie rescue is about 5 yrs and I noticed him have trouble over last couple of days. Is this a lifetime thing now?
The grass when pulled came out with the roots as well ( including dirt). I am not giving them dirt to eat.... the dirt is on the roots. Guinea pigs are fine at working out what to eat and don't seek out dirt to eat ( hence they love grass time). The other thing is that washing is actually not great - there are enzymes and nutrients that are excellent for them
