    Folded ally bonnets brings back a memory. I sold my Citroen DS Safari to a pal who one day did not fasten the bonnet properly with the inevitable consequence. The Safari had a built in roof rack and the ally bonnet hit it with such force that it look the shape of the roof rack - DS bonnets are huge. Happy days!

    The rolling 25-year tax exemption stopped in 1997 when the government froze the date. This meant that until 2014, there was a weirdly skewed classic car market where pre-'73 cars were worth more due to their tax-exempt status, based entirely on a meaningless and arbitrary date. Luckily they reinstated the rolling exemption in 2014, this time on a 40-year basis.

    Very interesting video. I sympathize with the unreliability. My 45 got written off last September & having had Rover's the last 40 years I wanted another to replace it. The only one local was a diesel 75 Tourer. Due to covid it hadn't turned a wheel since February. The car has been a nightmare. Hopefully she's well on the way to being sorted.

    Kangley Bridge Road. I know where that is! Wow. Small world, I regularly go there at work. Don't think that place is around on that road anymore, but it is quite an industrial area on that street. Do you know what building they were registered as being in?
    I'm at a loss at where my Volkswagen was delivered to. I have two separate addresses for where dealerships were, but they've both since closed and the sites have been turned into blocks of flats. It's only a 2004 car! That's not even an old car and the dealerships have already gone.

    Back in the day, we used to swop cars with other dealers so if someone bought a blue Rover and we only had a Red one we would Trade Plate or Truck between dealers that had one and swop with something they wanted, that's why some cars had a hundred miles on the clock prior to the end customer picking it up. Driving pre-PDI BL Car was challenging as the number of defects they had. Lights not working or seats not adjusting fuses blown rough running. It always paid to take a small tool kit, and remember to take the suspension blocks out.

    A shame you couldn't use a four speed automatic, to save fuel mileage, as you pay a fortune for fuel ⛽!
    Yes, I know you like a manual gearbox, but when you break a leg, foot, etc., or heavy traffic, you would be grateful for an automatic!
    I must say you are doing a very good job with the limited resources you have.

    • @furiousdriving
      @furiousdriving  4 роки тому +1

      Its hard to find a 4 speed auto that would fit, most 3+ ratio autos need an ECU which this doesnt have any of, plus with the ever tighter restrictions on using older cars in towns its not likely to see much stop start traffic, so a 5 or 6 speed manual will be a huge upgrade

    • @frothe42

      @@furiousdriving Ugh, that's awful! I know Pete C has fitted a four speed automatic to his current restore of a Ford Cortina off an early model Sierra, but it is NOT a Rover with a V8.
      Yes, a five speed manual mostly makes sense, if you use it as an occasional cruiser.
      And after the SD1, Rover 800 became FWD. Ugh, I don't envy you, but I must say you truly are doing a very good job! And you have such unique vehicles in the UK 🇬🇧; yes, we have some very nice classic vehicles, many I remember from my childhood, but our next-door neighbour had two distinctive imports; a Citroën DS and a Renault Dauphine, not at the same time, but I remember admiring them as a small child!

Most recent was mk1 Audi TT bought 12 years ago rolling project then crank sensor went it snapped the bolt on way out and as on front of engine behind everything spent 5 years in a barn then basically a comedy sketch to get back on the road and ended up a massive project. Got there in the end new MOT etc then after a year of motoring the clutch slave cylinder went and I didn’t have the barn and no one wanted to do it, (gearbox and prop off) so alas it went, but hey ho hope you have better luck.

    This episode, Mat remembers the engine mounts that he forgot before...
    A suggestion that is worth making now is that, with the car now having a 4.6 rather than the stock 3.5 V8, it might well be worth considering fitting a separate transmission fluid cooler rather than using the standard in the radiator unit. I say this because the 4.6 should be producing a lot more power and torque than the stock 3.5 did so that's going to cause the transmission fluid to get a lot hotter than it would with the stock engine and a larger, stand-alone transmission cooler will massively reduce the risk of cooking the transmission. Also, you're not running the risk of having one of the cooler tubes inside the radiator corroding through or splitting and filling the transmission up with coolant, which will utterly destroy it to the point where almost nothing, and potentially not even the casing, can be re-used...

    • @furiousdriving
      @furiousdriving  4 роки тому

      Im going to add a separate coolers for the oil and trans when I get a bigger radiator for the engine, the Rover rad has a 2 separate sections for oil and water so if one leaks it just dumps the fluid, but the engine will need more cooling

    • @gosportjamie
      @gosportjamie 4 роки тому

      @@furiousdriving That's certainly a better set up than in a great deal of factory autos. I can imagine that some extra cooling may be needed, there's not really all that much space under a P6 bonnet, especially not with a V8 in there. My dad's old 2000TC series 1 could get pretty warm when driven with enthusiasm, despite having a rebuilt radiator and the cooling system thoroughly overhauled and cleaned out...

      Best advice on an old Rover is check for rust, and make sure the interior is OK as parts are hard to find

    I understand that Henlys were a major distribution point for British cars. Thus shipping from Rover to Henlys and then onto a dealer would have been normal back in the day.

      People generally don't have anything better to do but esp now (obviously). Unfortunately, I will diagnose you through the sub-ether of YT comment section and possessing no authority whatsoever to make one and tell you, yes, you probably have gone mad. Edit: whoops! That was meant for the originator of this thread, and not you. But you are probably bonkers, anyway, so my unprofessional diagnosis still stands.
