Great review. Finally a real world comparison. I agree about the robotic element of programming moves. No movie director is ever going to accept these kind of moves compared to two operator moves, motivated by movement in the scene, actors, vehicles. Takes years to learn that art. Thanks for this.
I've been using an M30 doing high voltage powerline inspections for a few months and I love the new RC Plus controller! Dual ops is great with the new controller! I can't wait to get my hands on an I3!
As always another Great video. Definitely on a professional level. Really enjoyed the night footage of the city. The comparison between the two , FPV quad and DJI drone, is definitely a good talking point. And you are totally correct, they both are great tools for aerial photography. Keep up the good work! It's always fun to watch and follow along with you on your journey. Lincoln and I will be looking forward to seeing what you do next 🎉❤
I've been going back and forth with DJI's engineers over the "centimeter-level" positioning and how inaccurate the positioning actually is when doing repeatable routes. The takeaways have been as follows: • It's not actually centimeter accuracy, because though the drone is accurate to the centimeter, the RTK-2 is only accurate to ~1 meter (horizontally). • Vertically, they say that up to a 3-meter variation in ellipsoidal height is normal. But in my experience, I've seen variation up to 10 meters. Either scenario makes "matching" shots for long-term timelapses very difficult. • They said that the reason for variation between shots was because the gimbal positioning has an error margin of 2-3°. However, in addition to gimbal variation, my shots are often very difficult to match up because there seems to be significant pacing differences between the different runs, leaving some clips longer/shorter than others. So, Waypoint 14 does not always happen when another clip's Waypoint 14 occurs. After bringing this up, they said that's normal too. So, it's all cool and better than no RTK. And it works well for this scenario- masking different runners in different parts of the frame. But it's not so plug-and-play when you want to crossfade whole frames from one shot to another.
Good to know, I've been searching for this type of explanation. Curious if a different RTK system can be used if it's anymore accurate? Did the engineers mention trying to further enhance and perfect this? I've used waypoints on the mavix pro 3 cine and with hyperlapse or video city scapes never lined up to the point in post you could line up some buildings but nothing like they demonstrate.
@@JustinJung after talking with them, my understanding is that it's simply a limitation of the technology and there's no way for them to improve it via firmware updates or whatever. I will say, since my first few times using it (I've been going to the same site over a few months, and I've gone six times now) the difference between the first and second runs were VERY significant. But since then, it's been less so- things have been closer matched. I'm not seeing as many wild 10-meter variations anymore. It definitely helps to let the antenna / controller run 15 min before doing anything at all (to let the positioning update and settle), and it's definitely helped to hot swap batteries between flights / clips. (I have about 20 paths I fly at this location, so it can take a few hours.) I wasn't hot swapping before, and everything would have to recalibrate. For lining up in post, it helps that I'm shooting a big pole barn in a cornfield. But, I'd imagine that if I were to do city buildings where the foreground / background building positions would be much more noticeable, it would be harder to make seamless.
@@BeauRosario I wonder as far as the gimbal positioning though if they'll find tune that? You'd think with the invention of AI you could have it match an image positioning or something you show it.
dude. i have ALWAYS loved the inspire series. (besides its famouse inspire 1 n 2 death spin) BUT. seeing this new cool looking I-3 With that kind of low light ability? Im in love. Good job dude
Back in 2015-16 the yuneec typhoon H could do the 3D dolly. Also could run with two controllers and had lifting landing gear and a 360 never ending rotating 4k camera. Don't know why they didn't get better market share. Could it done with a battery camera for sure
3DR Solo perfect cable cam and video waypoints in 2015, it was my first drone, and I’m sad they didn’t make it because I can only imagine the features it would have by now. I can’t understand why o can do a waypoint hyper lapse in a consumer drone, but not a video waypoint. I can’t understand how this doesn’t work for a drone of this level.
Nurk, the repeatability problem you mentioned is probably due to how you had the RTK base set up. I use RTK a lot while mapping. There are a couple of ways I can think of that would result in that problem you had. I don't fly with a DJI RTK. I use a Emlid RS2 as my base. The same principles apply though. If you reach out I can probably help you resolve that. Great video :)
I think you still have a job. Sure, the I3 is impressive, but it's another tool in your toolbox to use depending on the situation. The CMW rig or heavy lift rigs that use a specialist UHD recording camera still have their place. It all comes down to what is required for the shoot.
If you had a tighter lens that tracking car shot through the trees would look stellar. I see later where you mentioned this. Also, platform speed. The FPV heavy is capable of much faster speeds which is useful in some situations. thanks for the review. finally, speaking of unemployed...the strike will take care of that...
Can you record the 3D Dolly Manual flight path, so that you can replay that? For example, could you have recorded the manual flight you both did in tandem at 9:50 so that it could be replayed and recorded exactly as you flew it with the same speed match?
It's super good but it also requires skill to get the most out of it. Kinda like lane keep assist vs a racing driver. Two different things but super nice to have
It would be great if you could figure out how to use googles with the FPV camera. As you know being in the googles is infinitely safer for close proximity work.

Hey Nurk, totally unrelated question but I'm just getting into film making. Got a BMPCC 6k G2 and I was wondering if instead of buying a 100 sony NP-F batteries is there a way to use 4S li-po's instead?

same thing will happen as everywhere else, the market will separate. There will be ultra high end stuff for the pros and automated overpriced junk for the masses. But it will have cool software that will work sometimes too.
I’ve been really excited about the programmable routes, but really disappointed with their execution. Even with the RTK base flying the same route the pitch and yaw of the camera can each be off by 5 deg. This seems like it really shouldn’t be that hard, but after dozens of tests the I3 really can’t do it 100%. It is always off by enough to make a difference. These I can see in the footage. Now supposedly there is cm level accuracy with the drone position, but if the camera is off by that much I’ve been really hesitant to fly a slow route close to things and then fly it fast. This is too bad as it really is such a great potential feature. Unfortunately it usually takes a model or two for the drone to catch up with DJI’s marketing department.
