So enjoyed this video. My mother was born in Leadgate in 1916, Irene Tait. Her father Robert is on the WWI memorial outside the garage. Her mother was a Borthwick - some of you may have known Isaiah Borthwick or Anthony Borthwick who died in 2012. Love to hear these interviews, and those wonderful accents. I live in Devon, but visited Leadgate last month (October 2022) - but I shall be back.
I love this old footage - a real nostalgia trip for me. I left the North East for London about 25 years ago & really miss this high windy little corner of NW County Durham. I lived down the valley in Lanchester as a kid but my parents were originally from Delves Lane & Leadgate so I've a real affinity with this area. Decent working people with a strong sense of regional pride & identity - something I never found in London but something I still feel whenever I'm back & visit Consett, Leadgate & the surrounding areas. I genuinely never realised how much I'd grow to miss the area so thanks for posting up this footage.
Anyone from Leadgate know Eva Sanderson, her brother lived with her he was Bill Sanderson neither of them ever married. Uncle Bill loved a bet on the horses and a pint of Newcastle brown. My Aunt Eva was a Methodist and I don’t think Uncle Bill knew what a church looked like lol
maybe a video of all the pubs past and present in Leadgate would have been in order - the fellowship and comradeship just as important for the village and the people who live there

+MrBrit120 For those who thought it was the invasion bells ringing at St Ives you can come out of your bunkers - i know a certain Bill who was ready to repel an invasion but it was only me ringing the bell for the first time after its repair with kind permission of the Vicar

Leadgate Cross Road has changed recently with the butchers gone now and the building converted into several flats.
