The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling is some of Judd’s best work. An amazing story. I felt like I lived and experienced every part of Garry’s life. What an amazing, indelible mark he left on all of us.
Anyone who saw Conan's tribute to Garry after he died knows what Garry meant to Conan (and what he did for Conan at the lowest point of his career aka the Tonight Show crisis.)
My favorite Garry joke of all time was in the documentary, it’s one that I completely forgot about until I rediscovered it here. Something along the lines of: “A lot of mothers go through post-partum depression; I did too, I admit it. I came out of the womb, looked up at my parents and thought “oh no... they’re Jews.”
Judd's documentary is amazing, eye-opening, funny and moving. I grew up watching Garry Shandling in the 80s and I never had any idea what a thoughtful, intelligent and spiritual person he was.
I haven’t watched something that moved me as much as The Zen Diaries of Garry Shadling in a long time. And I’m so many ways too. It’s a fascinating, funny, heartbreaking and uplifting watch!
my favorite joke was one of his earliest where he said something like his parents moved to Arizona at an early age. It took him awhile for me to find them...lol
Zen diaries reminds me of the documentary Super Mensch, about a music manager who is considered amongst musicians, actors and other entertainment people to be one of the nicest and coolest men ever alive.
OMG Brian Linehan is hilarious in his pretension. It’s all about Linehan with the contrived glasses move. Gary hits it right on the head. I think organic humor is what Gary calls it. Funny in the moment, playing off and really listening to the other person which leads to the humor. I hear he was very disciplined and complicated. Sometimes an ass. Also very caring. Like all of us but highly gifted with the funny.
The movie they mention, What Planet Are You From, was hilarious. Unfortunately I had to rent it on VCR, back when that was a thing. I highly recommend it.
The interviewer's name, I recently discovered, was Brian Linehan. The first time I saw him was in Judd's documentary. That moment, when he takes his glasses off and looks earnestly at Garry and the cut back to Garry shows him rubbing his brow, made me howl. I think Garry reacted to the guy in the same way as many viewers, myself included, reacted to him.
Brian Linahan was a Canadian TV celeb interviewer who creeped out more guests than just Garry Shandling. Martin Short used to parody him on SCTV as "Brock Linahan" - worth checking out... Looking forward to watching Judd's doc on Garry.
I just watched the Garry Shandling doco. Very funny good human . That interviewer guy was scary. I laughed at Garry’s reaction which was what the viewer at home would be thinking, Garry didn’t filter🤪classic
*What Planet Are You From?* -- I don't have any bad recollections of that movie. It had a pretty good cast, but I can't recall the plot beyond a guy trying to get along with a woman.

This was a terrific interview. I adored how both Judd and Conan are so engaged talking about the immortalized Gary Shandling.
I served Gary room service from 91-94 in Hawaii.
Such a sweet nice guy .
Miss ya buddy

Is that a circumcision joke? Like, "Oh no...they're Jews, so I'm about to have part of my penis chopped off. $%."
I love it!!! Great timing!
The best part of that joke was the experience around it, with friends backstage.
Makes me think of a similar one, I think he told on Charlie Rose, "my mother is torn: She wants me to have kids, but not with another woman."

Garry, we miss you. Excited to see this documentary.
I've been watching the documentary on and off and it is really well done. Well done JUDD and I think it's your best work!
I must of watched that documentary 50 times. It's beautifully done.
Absolutely one of the best documentaries you’ll ever have the opportunity to watch. It may just change your life.
That guy who interviewed Gary was really strange... he made me uncomfortable too lol
It's like he's trying to look inquisitive but all he can do is look awkwardly seductive.
He was creepy.
Ha, Brian Linehan, my mom used to say he looked too simian.
His nose was creepy.
Center Cut Studio yes and his mouth doesn't smile right it's like sinister
my favorite joke was one of his earliest where he said something like his parents moved to Arizona at an early age. It took him awhile for me to find them...lol
The excerpts from his diary are beautifully funny

Fantastic doc !! Both of em
Conan has gotten more and more personable as the years go by.
If Gary were John Coltrane, Judd Apatow turned out to be Kenny G.

Of the most popular talk shows on american tv these days, Conan is the best interviewer
The guy that was interviewing Gary had a Grinch smile
Great stuff. Was there more to this interview?
This is the bit for Garry's doc. The bit for Garry's Doc. Garry called Judd up and asked Would he make a documentary?
Benjamin Gearig it's to the theme of Its The Garry Shandling Show.
John Lee good ol Randy
The guy interviewing Garry looks like William Macy
I thought “ what planet are you from was hilarious “ I just watched it a few years ago and it introduced me to Garry shandling
Me too!
Gary Shandling show makes me laugh just thinking about it!
Made a mistake ill leave it LOL
Hey nowwww thats a normal reaction
Brian Linahan had very detailed research on all his interview subjects and he freaked a lot of people out. Brian passed away a while back.
thank you Judd for making this happen
Good lord, I love Garry!

That guy made me uncomfortable and I don't know why.
I don't know about anyone else, but I thought that "What Planet Are You From" was great.
It was hilarious.
I own the DVD "What Planet Are You From?" ...

AWEsome being!
Jerry Lundegaard @6:21
palegreenstars ah jeez
Best thing about Garry's movie was we got to see a lot of Judy Greer.
Life is a videogame confirmed.
Nice little interview. Something different.
Brian Linehan was an amazing interviewer. He didn't do fluff interviews he got right in there, like a probing.
I love "What planet are you from?"
I thought “what planet are you from?” Was hilarious. Definitely not a misfire for me.
I think I was 14 when I saw it, but I thought it was funny.
I’m definitely watching it again after seeing it once when released.
Makes me wonder what George would have to say about the current state of the country
Oh dear god I can only imagine!
Honestly, most of the stuff he said about politics would be applicable today.
No, but thanks to the internet and my great love and thirst for comedy, I'm well aware of him.
@@rjcomeaux5461 Good for you. Perfect answer. Contemporaries don't have a mortgage on artists.
I miss Shandling so hard.
I really liked the movie " What planet are you from"

does anyone know if the doco will come out on any non-hbo streaming services? I live in Aus so can’t get HBO
idk anything about Aussie TV but are you sure there isn't an equivalent? like, in the UK we have Sky Atlantic that airs all the HBO stuff.
It'll be on putlocker on the 28th
Kindness.
He was a hydra senator
Gary was great!
Comedy and pain...Shandling was a tortured genius...you gotta really, really love comedy to do what he did...
Wanna cry? Watch this documentary.
I would love to see a reboot of the Larry sanders Show called the Jon Stewart Show.
I'm so early!!! Yayyyy😂
Shrek is Love!
How do those glasses stay on..?

i like how they pretend like he wasn't sacrifised
Hi
Zgoin
Yeah, in your face Brian Linehan!
Coco
Benjamin Gearig why have you called yourself this then have you miss spelt gaming?
Star Wars is the best
It was the nose, right? I mean, c'mon. It made me uncomfortable. (Judd, am I right, was it the nose?)
Thinking, JD from Scrubs. Idk why.
Judd always makes me want to settle down with a nice Jewish girl but then he picked the most non-Jewish girl possible to be his wife.
Did Garry die 🤤
Judd Apatow looks like a thinner Harvey Weinstein. So bizarre.
Wow thx
unbelievably boring documentary. waste of time
Hahaha
