    When you spoke of your damage, my Wife and I had near tears of empathy for you. Last year I stopped to get gas near Chickahominy Reservoir, OR. I pulled in and no sooner than I did, the gas attendant had me back up. We were only there less than 10 seconds. Sure enough, a prius pulled in right behind me. Yes, you guessed it, I backed my trailer (thankfully, very gently) into the prius. Luckily, I only put a small dent in my sewer hose bumper. However, prius definitely had damage. I was nearly sick over it. I’m always careful. But it was at the end of a longer than normal travel day. And if you know that area, it was the last gas for over 100 miles. We were on vapors. So I was stressed enough to not be as attentive as normal. I definitely exercised my sailors tongue at myself later after setting up camp.

    It's a good idea to use walkie-talkies when backing into a spot. Backing up a trailer has always come easy to me, I've backup up everything from boat trailers, to RV's, to 53' semi trailers. But while we were full timing, I always had Jo-Ann get out of the truck with a Walkie-Talkie and keep an eye on anything that could damage our RV or truck. It's just peace of mind.

    We have an f350 dually and it was really tall in the back end leaving little room for clearance with the fifth wheel. We took out the spacers between the leaf springs and rear axle of the truck. We remove the ones that came with, and put back shorter spacers. Gave us an extra couple of inches of clearance for the trailer.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  Рік тому

      Nice to hear that you figured that out, Lori! We have 7 inches of clearance, which should be adequate if I don't do anything stupid. Such was not the case this time.

    Marc if it makes you feel any better about your vehicular kerfuffle... I have yet to see a single 5th wheel and a single 5th wheel tow truck that does not have some damage to both the RV and the vehicle. Usually truck bed is all weird and bent out of shape like a tree fell on it and rv is all discombobulated. This is exactly why every time I hear people "how easy it is to back up a 5th wheel" I wince. In fact this is exactly why I get out of my RV every single time, no matter spotters and camp hosts trying to guide you in... After having few very short of disaster situationships.... I was like no way Jose... Never have "having eyes on back of your head and head on a swivel" are truer than when trying to navigate an RV somewhere.
    Despite parking like a hundred thousand times... my current RV managed to hit a bolt that is sticking out of my own driveway latch and put a 20 inch gash as I was backing in. I fixed it myself to point where its flush with bondo and a whole bunch of sand paper. I ended up putting a black walmart decal over the gash to at least hide it somewhat. I know exactly how you felt because you want to be both mad, park the darn thing and realize what repairs will cost.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  Рік тому

      Yep, you've nailed it. I was extra frustrated because it's not only a brand new truck, but also it was the very first day we'd towed with it! Screaming every expletive I could think of out in the middle of the southern Utah desert didn't help any, either. 😆

    I know that Burr Trail campground well. There's something about that spot - trying to get better shade I backed into a dead cedar branch and shattered the rear window on my trailer. And the no-see-ums there feasted on me every time I stepped outside. The next time there a huge thunderstorm flooded the canyon below and the sandy campground soil turned to slop. And once again I was visited by thousands of my no-see-um pals. That being said I'm going back there again this fall, after the monsoons and no-see-ums are supposed to be gone. Third time's the charm, I hope. Good video, more people need to see the occasional frustrating challenges of boondocking.

As a former Painter and now damage estimator I know what a pain that is going to get taken care of. And then the shops have to be narrowed down to Ford certified aluminum repair. Heh you have recaptured me after not watching for months while you did equipment reviews, You also seemed to be padding the videos with excessive use of the drone. Was not interested in watching five minutes of drone flights around some campground.
