If you think Cave lake has water, you better call ahead first. The state was rebuilding the dam at the lake and it was drained for construction when we camped there in 2022-2023 with lots of construction equipment sounds to spoil the peace.
I am not even sure it was this video, but If it was you were talking about how Ely is pronounced. Many people pronounce it E-lye it is prounounced by locals as E-lee. nice video.
I was just in Ely last week taking Highway 50 from Carson City to Utah. I spent the night at Great Basin National Park. Thanks for the excellent video.
your professional approach to your channel is noticed and appreciated. From the editing, music selection and camera work. Its always a pleasure to watch your content. thank you
Great Basin is by far my favorite national park. Not a lot of people and the campsites are a good distance away from each other. A lot more elbow room. Plus, the best campground is above 10,000 feet. That means temps of 60 - 80 degrees during the day. A great escape from the 110+ degrees in Las Vegas.
My brother and I was only going to stay 1 night in Ely, but ended up staying for 3 nights, just a peaceful town, loved it. Cheer's from Perth Western Australia
Cheers. Happy to call Ely Nevada my hometown! Glad you both enjoyed your stay. Visit again soon. Someday I hope to visit Australia. I wrote a report on Australia, when I was in high school, and got an A+. 😁👍🏼 Blessings! 🙏🏼
Awesome video. We were just there in late April. Passing through Ely. We decided to stayed at Ward Mountain campground. It’s about 5 miles south of Ely off highway 6. Views are incredible and the campground great.
That's a great spot, Jim. Homie and I drove up Route 6 to check out the Ward Mountain Campground. We continued on up onto a shoulder of Ward Mountain, negotiating a white-knuckle Jeep trail to top out for that view of Ely seen in the video. What you didn't see was my unsuccessful attempt to get back into the truck and close the door in the 70 mph winds we encountered up there. I actually had to go around to the other side, get back in via the back door and climb over the center console to get into the driver's seat. 😅 Homie filmed that, it'll probably end up in some blooper reel someday.
Love my hometown of Ely NV! We were up there the first week of May also. Crazy wind! We live in Phoenix now and often wonder how we ever survived the cold in Ely!
Wow I've been thru Ely in the big truck a few times, never knew all this is there, very interesting, hopefully something we will rv there, thanks Mark.

Thanks so much! Hope to see you out there. We've taken photos from some pre-UA-cam trips and turned them into videos by panning/zooming the stills in motion, a la Ken Burns type stuff. Perhaps that would work for you, too.

@@GrandAdventure it was a seven hour train from los mochis Sinaloa to copper canyon in chihuahua. I got caught out on a platform entering tunnel.. i learned quickly 😂😂
This was really cool! I was this close to being able to ride one of these trains in Silverton, CO and ultimately did not do it so to have first front row view is pretty darn cool. Just from this video I think Nevada has a New Mexico sort of vibe in terms of climate and flora. Hmm you mentioned Kennekot. Aren't they that giant mine just south of Provo somewhere? Looks like they have been operating in business for a long long time.
We've ridden and filmed the Durango & Silverton Railroad, too, back in 2019: ua-cam.com/video/Uw087seVq_o/v-deo.html Nevada and New Mexico are quite different, actually, at least from our perspective. For one thing, New Mexico has that Spanish flavor that Nevada doesn't. For another, the climate in Nevada seems to be more diverse, perhaps due to a little greater elevation range, but also because northern Nevada has a much higher latitude than New Mexico reaches. The unique Basin & Range ecosystem encompasses nearly all of Nevada, whereas southern New Mexico is actually part of the Chihuahuan Desert - which itself has its own look. Kennecott's operations that you refer to encompass the entire Oquirrh Mountain range that marks the western boundary of the Salt Lake Valley, separating it from the Tooele Valley. So it's actually not south of Provo but almost assuredly the mine that you're referring to, one of the largest open-pit copper mines in the world, where they've been extracting copper and other precious minerals since 1898. Kennecott Utah Copper moved into Ely in the 1970s, although Ely's first copper boom began in 1902. So yes, those two mining operations are roughly the same age.
Great presentation, Marc. This is perhaps one of the most historic areas you have presented to date, given the size and number of preserved and functioning remnants. The railroad ride was fabulous. I doubt anything has significantly changed over the past two hundred years. And no doubt many the bristle cone pines still exist as they did 200 years ago. These remote areas in Nevada are like stepping back in time. I can see why you wanted to visit this area. What's the deal with forest fires this year? Last year is was a problem as you headed west.
