1:50 - the invoice is shown. Honda Part Number needed (both $125 each from dealer, but may be cheaper online!):
82220-T0A-A03 (Lock, R.) = Right Side Rear Back Seat Upright Lock
82620-T0A-A03 (Lock, L.) = Left Side Rear Back Seat Upright Lock
Tools Needed:
12mm socket (1/2 inch worked for me) & ratchet with extension
Flat Screwdriver

Thanks for the video. Here’s another tip I figured out along the way in case people are still reading all the comments. You can pop that plastic cover loose while the seat is still upright, which gives you better access to undoing the latch. It won’t come out, but you can move it around. Thanks again.

Thank you! Your video was perfect. You just helped me to save $175.00/hr in labor charges if I had gone to the dealership. Took me about 15 minutes to take out the old parts and about 15 minutes to put in the new parts. That was for both sides. They had both broken in the exact same way as you showed. Again, thanks!

This video was really helpful. It's so strange that both my seats stopped working simultaneously. At first I thought it was something electronic until I started researching on what the issue was. Read many others having the same problem. This should be a recall for sure on these things. The only thing I would advise about this video, is that the rear seat behind passenger front seat, the latch on that single seat is totally easy to manually unlatch, however, the double seat behind the drivers side is a nightmare and was super difficult due to the plastic housing cover over it that prevents you from getting in there. The latch was a total bear to get under and pull-up. Once I figured out I needed to put a little muscle into it and just dig in, I finally got it to come-up. Thanks so much for this video!!
Yes, I thought this would be a problem when I made the video because it happened so randomly, and when I found that the part was made this way, I realized this will be happening to (a lot of) others. I'm pretty sure it is designed to fail so you have to get the dealer to repair. Hope the video helps to at least know what is involved with the repair, if not save some time/money by being able to DIY fix it.
Thanks for the note on the latch. It is a bit tricky to trigger - and does take a bit of force so that it unlocks (and harder to video... ). If you can get one side, it may be a bit easier to see the mechanism to trigger the other side.

Great video. I used it to change out the latch in my 2012 CRV today. Luckily I found one on EBay for $38!
It's hard to believe that Honda would make a heavy duty part like this and then use some cheap nylon plastic in such a critical area.
A couple of suggestions that might help:
1. Those bolts are 12mm.
2. I found it easier to first remove the trim piece which made releasing the seat back a snap. A trim removal tool made it possible.

I appreciate the video which helped in removal of the part. Once I got the broken part out I removed the plastic from the metal piece which holds the cables and put the uppermost hole over the hinge assembly and put it back together. It is not quite as smooth a release from the top of the seat as a new part but is a quick fix for 0$ and when using the release in the trunk it feels exactly the same.

Thank you! I had exact same problem with my 2012 CR-V. Same car, same problem. Both seats broke within a week of each other. DEFINITELY change both seats if/when one fails. I went to two dealers, neither had seen this before. I suspect they'll start seeing it now. Easy change for me, np. Thanks. TL
Yep. IDK if I was the first one that this happened to, but when I saw how the part was built, I KNEW it would happen to everyone. Doubtful that they will have a recall though.

Great video - helped me solve the problem with my rear seat. Was hoping just the wire had popped out but can see, without taking the part out, that the plastic piece is loose so probably broken. Ordering new part today. Thanks!!

Thank you for this video. My driver's side (left) rear seat would not fold down. I ordered the parts and installed them with the help of this video. It turns out that the right side latch was also broken, yet it would still fold down. So as others have suggested, you should replace both latches if you have an issue with one. Also, in order to test whether it works, you need to flip up the seat cushion - otherwise the release cable does nothing.
Good point! Yes, both of my latches failed within the same month. I don't know if they were both used the same amount or if it is just that the (cheap) plastic components break down in that time period. Either way. It is worth replacing both at the same time while you have the tools handy and everything ready to go, because the seem to fail at close to the same time.

This was really easy to do; took less than a half hour to do the work. I found a place in Japan, JP Carparts, who sent over the right side latch based on the part number in your video. Total cost, including shipping, was about $50 and I got it in less than a week. I'm sure I saved a bundle. I really appreciate you taking the time to create such useful instructions and helping us DIYers help ourselves.

Thank you for your step by step video. Both my seats on my CRV -2014 have the same problem. Very expensive part to replace . Can't understand why Honda would retain a weak plastic part that breaks after a few years. There is a post using 2 zip ties to hook up to the latch if yours breaks again .
Yes, it seems built to fail. The zip tie video looks like a good idea, but I wouldn't want to have to repair it too often.

I tried the zip tie method but it only worked a few times, and then the balls on the end of the cables came out of the metal clip, after they bent the retaining tab. Must be a lot of forces involved. I’m afraid using zip ties will eventually break the cables themselves, and cost a lot more to have replaced. So, I will be buying the actual new parts. Thanks again.

Thanks for a very helpful video. I had the same issue. the hardest part was getting to the latch to drop the seat with the shroud cover in place and not managing to break the locating tabs. Managed it eventually and an easy job after that just following your advice.
I would say this will be common failure point in the future as it is a plastic part that fails.
I recommend prising up the shroud to get behind it to move the latch initially. Costs about$125 AU in Australia from Honda

Great Video. I have the same issue with my CRV. It must be a design flaw with the mechanism that the plastic part is so weak and thin. I would suggest supporting the seat when collapsing it, so it doesn't slam down; and then lower the back part gently. This may be the cause for the initial breakage. But Honda should have made that plastic part out of metal or something stronger.
That is a good point. It is hard to know that this part is a weak point until it breaks, though. Guess we all will be more careful letting the seats down and up... from now on!

Thanks for the handy video. I took mine out. Looks like the nylon/steel bit that attaches to the cables has just popped off it's pin. Wondering what held it there in the first place. I put it back on, re-installed, and it just popped off again. Might have to buy the part if I can't figure out how to fix it.
Sure! There are a couple plastic clips that attach the cable to the mechanism. You can kind of see them in the video. It sounds like the plastic clip may have broken on you. For example, tat 9:13 you may be able to see that there is a grey clip on the top and white on the bottom attached to the cable. IDK if you can get that part separately, or if it comes with the cable. I hope this helps!

Thank you for posting this video! Gives me the confidence to try and fix this problem myself. There are no stupid questions though right? Please can you tell me if the rear seat behind the driver's seat is considered the left or right hand side? That is the one that has broken on mine... I never use the other side due to a child seat being installed (Australia) so I am not wanting to spend the extra $$$ given it most likely has plenty of life left in it.
Correct! There are no stupid questions! I had the same question myself when this initially happened to my car. The parts ARE different on both sides. At 1:50, I show the invoice with the part numbers. Part Number 82220-T0A-A03 is for the Right Side and 82620-T0A-A03 is for the Left Side. These part numbers are for US vehicles... I assume they would be similar for Australia, but I am not 100% sure. They are definitely two different part numbers, though, since each side is different. I hope this helps!

so if I may, i have a dodge durango with a 3rd row seat. Theres a problem when folding these seats foward; the right side seat will fold but the seat next to it wont budge. The Headrest will fold just not the whole seat. Thats been a problem for me for months and getting the groceries into the back has been a problem because I do not have the room. Would the problem be the same as that vehicle you're demonstrating??

This happened to me today. You can use your finger to open the stuck latch when the seat is upright. With a screw driver it was a bit difficult so the finger method worked for me. Where did you get this part for $75? The cheapest I can find it online is $96. Please let me know!
Yeah, it looks like the price of this part has gone up... Got plastic cover off for easier access can lift lock with screw driver but still doesn't release????
It is a bit tricky. If you can wiggle the screwdriver, I think it will eventually pop out for you

No. Not at all. They are designed to fail.
How did you make the left rear seat to go down when it still had the cover? I tried to use a flathead screwdriver, but there's not enough room on the left to life the lock....
I just commented on this. It's a nightmare. You have to really dig into it. That plastic housing on the outside prevents you from getting a good angle to dig your screwdriver under it. I finally realized that you have to put some muscle into it and angle your screwdriver up, in and then down. I was being too gentle because I was afraid of damaging something. Once I did this, it finally worked. It only took me like 30 mins of doing this over and over that I figured it out. Good luck!

Anyone had battery issues with the 2012 CRV? What about Sway link bars? I just had to have those replaced today. Expensive!
Thanks for the comment. Its funny - I have had the battery replaced TWICE!! The first two times it was under warranty. They put a 90 month battery in it, but it died. The one in it now seems to have been okay for a couple years at least. I have also had to have the infamous vtc actuator replaced because it would grind when starting.
I have not had sway link bar issues... What are the symptoms of that?
@@Zacholas yes, two batteries for me as well. I now carry a portable jump start battery with me. It's crazy!
I have not had the VTC replaced but I guess I will have to at some point. The dealership told me that it's just the way these cars sound at start up. Mmmkay.
The sway link bars going bad sound like a rattling or clanking noise under the front end or I guess back end near the tires. I thought something was loose and about to fall off any minute. I knew nothing of their purpose and significance. Sigh...just one part after another. I have a 2012.
@@cathytwine207 Oh wow, I didn't realize others had a problem with the battery. Yeah, it definitely must be an issue. The VTC issue just began to sound SO bad that I had it replaced. I know the dealership & Honda say it is "normal" but it got ridiculous and was actually embarrassing to have that rattle every time the car started.
Thanks for the info on the sway bars. I was starting to worry that I might not have anything else to worry about. The design flaw in the back seat clips is OBVIOUS as other commenters have noted. I made this video because I knew there will be many with issues with it. Its not really a hard fix, it is just the plastic parts that are a bit tricky to remove/easy to break. The metal clip has a small piece of plastic used at a stress point. IDK...

Rattling noise near the tires where it's loose...sounds like something is loose. For me, it was the front end. Granted, I do have over 100k miles.
@@Zacholas I have a 2012 CRV purchased new and still own it. Great car BTW! Couple of years ago Honda sent me a letter in the mail for a TSB. You have to update the vehicle firmware on the ECU. There is a fix for the battery drain. I went through 2 batteries also in 3 years. It has been 3 years since the update and the issue seems to be fixed.

I just emailed Honda Cars (same dealership you got your parts from) and they now want 177 dollars for it. Why Honda made the one part of plastic instead of metal is plain dumb ... unless they want it to break.
Yes, this was certainly designed to fail. It would have been very simple to make it repairable or design it to last.
It sounds like the price for the part may have gone up. I found it on the internet first and printed out the website showing the price. The Honda Dealership matched the price, which was better than what I thought they would do. I ordered through the dealership primarily so I could return it because I was not sure of the exact part number, but it was the correct one.

I doubt it. The part that breaks on this is manufactured for/by Honda specifically.

Yeah, I couldn't find a video on this and figure it may become a problem for some owners. The plastic part in the metal hinge/clasp is a poor design, and it is very easy to break the cover and rivets. I was able to epoxy/glue the posts on the covers so they work great again.

Just FYI the bolts are 12mm not 1/2 inch.
Just goes to show how crap this era of Honda was/is when it comes to quality. I had both of mine fail within days of each other, and right when I needed to urgently transport a large package that wouldn't fit in the vehicle unless both seats were down. I got the first seat down using the screwdriver method within a minute or two but spent the next 3 HOURS trying to get the other seat to go down. I would've given up but I had to get that package somewhere.
If you look at the broken parts, the metal piece where those beads on the ends of the release wires go is attached to a pivot inside the latch mechanism. That piece of metal is sandwiched in a piece of plastic, but the metal part DOES NOT EXTEND ALL THE WAY TO THE PIVOT. The entire load of the release force is carried 100% by the plastic. And that's where the failure mode is. Right where the metal ends is where the plastic sheared off. I would love to kick the engineer who designed that and/or whatever bean counter at Honda who decided to save a penny or two per part and make the thing only partially metal right in the genitals.
My CR-V also has the infamous VTC cold startup grinding noise.
This pissed me off so much that I think I'm done with Honda.

I felt the same way. It put me in a bind too, and when I saw how poorly the part is engineered, I made the video. I may be done with Honda too, but at least this CAN be fixed without taking it to the dealer (thought they did not make it easy to find the part!!!!). They totally under-designed the part with cheap plastic carrying the load - it would've been simple and cheap to make the whole thing metal or at least making the entire part repairable (without riveting it together). I hope the video helped.
My car also had the VTC grinding noise issue. It was well over 500 dollars to get that one fixed - I ended up taking it to the dealer for that one. They say they installed the "new improved" part, guess we'll see if it is improved for real. There should definately be a recall on the VTC... doubt they will recall anything unless it is tied directly to safety. Hope you can find a better way to get the VTC fixed.
@@Zacholas Forgot to say thanks for posting! Video was definitely helpful, and I avoided breaking the plastic trim pieces thanks to you. Judging by the amount of comments this video is getting now it looks like these parts are starting to fail en masse.
If you do a lot of DIY car work you might pick up one of these:

These will pop off the plastic trim rivets and you won't have to struggle with a screwdriver to do it. Less risk of damaging them too.
I've read mixed things about the VTC actuator replacement. From what I've read on various places online, some say it fixes the problem, other report that it still comes back, but less often than before. I'm not about to pour $500 into an engine repair on a car that I'm not particularly fond of that may or may not actually fix the problem.
The VTC actuator issue goes all the way back to 2008 when Honda started putting this series of engines into Accords. You would think that a timing chain engine designed and built by Honda would be as bulletproof of an engine as you could get, but apparently not. It took Honda until 2016 (8 years!) to finally acknowledge the problem. They had already phased out this particular engine after 2013. I think that says something about how much this company cares about it's customers.
There are almost no reports of complete engine failure because of it, but if you follow the logic of what happens, I could see it happening in rare cases. Extra forces and wear on the timing chain from the VTC actuator grinding over time could stretch the chain and prematurely wear out or damage the timing chain tensioner. If the timing ever fails on this engine, it's an interference design, so that means pistons and valves collide, and then you're in for a thousands of dollars engine rebuild.
I'll guess I'll just wait and see how long this car lasts.
All you have to do is change the VTC gear and the noise goes away

@5:14: Ugh. That one piece of plastic costs $80. That's just for the part itself. That is insane. Honda is horrible about indicating how to remove that crap. So much of it is designed to be pried and popped off (e.g., the lining of the rear hatch), but then they randomly add stuff like this, where pulling it off breaks it... and then they charge you out the wazoo for a piece of plastic.

Mine both side broke. 2013 CRV. the part has 99% meta except where it broke is plastic and that was the load bearing part. I think Honda designed like that so they rip off more money from you!
