Whenever I’m feeling anxious or having trouble sleeping, these kind of videos always help me relax. There’s something so calming about watching old and worn out things being restored.
Hi, I’m up a lot in the middle of the night too. On UA-cam look for helping anxiety by massaging the Vegas nerve, really easy and quick and worked for me!
Those badges are rewards for completing Volksmarches, events in Germany and other Germanic parts of the world which are sort of like big community hikes. My mother went on them as a child.
As a child, I grew up in part, in Western Germany. My family holidayed on the Rhine and in Bavaria. My brother and I both had walking sticks and collected badges. Seemed to recall that they were called 'Stocknagels'. I still have mine today nearly 50 years later.
My dad told me about meeting a German tourist once when he was young, who had a walking stick covered in badges like this. He was walking around America, mostly, with a little bit of hitchhiking. We should revive this tradition.
What an awesome piece of history. Imagine when most of the gentlemen used these beautiful walking sticks. You have given new life to this lovely piece and I say, THANK YOU!
this is so beautiful. i'm lucky to have my grandfather's walking cane, and his father-in-law's walking cane. they were born in 1894 and 1862. just think what those canes have witnessed.
@@blueeyedbehr When you stop and do the calculations it's reasonable but when you only see the dates and allow yourself to be encompassed just by that, it seems a true wonder. lol I'm still surprised though by only 3 generations from 1894-1962. Both your grandfather and your Dad waited, for their era, to have children.
@@nanuq83 actually, i'm the youngest of five, the first was born in 1944 - she's 18 years older than i am. my mother turned 42 only four months after i was born.
That growel frightened my poodle who was asleep in my chair next to me! She has had a rough time with fireworks and thunder storms! What a great job of restoring the walking stick, really enjoyed watching you!
I found a walking stick, when visiting my girlfriend in Germany at a flea market. I still have it 30yrs + in my hall tree....Hi 👋🏻 from sunny Southern California......
The ears have been wornd down by years of walking with this beautiful stick in would love to have it but could walk with it the badges must be earned. Beautiful.
That walking stick is a massive product made by polish highlanders from Tatra Mountains as a souvenir. There are two symbols of Tatra-bear on handle and edelweiss flower on the stick.Funny is that metal plates are from Karkonosze Mountains, far west from Tatra.Man with long beard is Karkonosz or Rzepior, spirit of that mountains, the next one is from Sniezka, the highes mountain of Karkonosze.Karpacz is a city close to Sniezka. One with deer head i cant see correctly, but it ihas the same form as that with Sniezka mountain. The last one signed as Szczyrk is from different part of Poland.Szczyrk is a city in Beskid Slaski, located in middle south.
The restoration was great. It's not over restored. It still looks like an old thing. Good job. I would not restore it at all- just give it a very good clean up but that's just me. Fantastic video! I love it
This makes me miss the hiking trips I took when I was younger. I’d hike through a state park and afterwards march up to the souvenir shop and get my badge!
You love this part you should you did shush a wonderful job you are a master that is why I subscribed to your channel. Thank you for your craft it is a pleasure to watch. At first I was worried about the patina of the medals but what a beautiful job you have acomplished. Bravo sir Bravo I am a old man and have worked in wood all my life I like your committed workmanship
I really enjoyed the bird song at the beginning of this video but the insect noise during the later part was truly annoying. Beautiful work on the walking stick. Thank you for sharing!
Nice restoration. The walking cane turns out beautiful. As kIds we had such canes too, and they had iron /steel tipps to protect the wooden tip from getting worn.
The bird sounds are familiar to me. All North American woodland and wetlands birds. Robins, redwing blackbirds, chickadees, etc. I hear them every day. The robins in my yard scold me like 5:57 when I go outside. They are nesting in my yard!
I would have kept the patina on the bear handle. It showed such character...I would love to use such a stick...instead of my store bought model! Well done you!
When you first started to pull the handle off, I thought it was going to be one of those canes that had a sword hidden in it. Oh well, the restoration turned out beautifully.
I'm glad you enjoyed. I have one more, but a bit different. Was found in the same place by my Landlord. He actually bought the flat with everything left inside since ww2. This week I will make a video with that too. Thanks for watching and supporting my work!
This is a beautiful restoration. I learned a lot from the comments. I love your respectful disassembly, and the restored wood is absolutely gorgeous. I hesitate to bring up a touchy subject, but might the original owner have been a Jew who had little choice when they left their home? Regardless of its origin, you have done a beautiful and respectful restoration of the original craftsmanship.
At 16.00 mins you said "I love this part" , Me too , there's something magical about seeing wood grain come alive when it get's oiled 👍 nice restoration job mate , It should be a criminal offence I say for good wood to be thrown out especially if it's already been made into something like in this case a good walking cane that can see many many years service ahead, We're such a throw away society these days and it's tragical really, as soon as we don't like the look of something or see someone with a better one then it's in the bin with whatever and Amazon or Ebay get called upon for a new model, we will go like Easter island eventually and just consume the planet for all it's worth 😔
I totally agree! This is one of the reasons that determined me to start doing restoration projects. Of course, it is relaxing for me and takes my mind away from daily things, but the most beautiful part is to see something that others will throw away, saved and ready to be used again. Thanks for watching and for the nice words! Cheers 🍻
We had a similar a walking stick with beautiful engravings, 50 years back. You can pull the handle out to display a 30" long sword. Anybody else seen such a walking stick?
Ohhh you don't trust your hammering skills. Just kidding, I have sausage's for fingers also. My former brother in-law stands 5'10" and I stand 5'6" my hands are slightly bigger than his. My former spouse and he were very shocked, she knew I had big hands but not that big. He asked how it is that I can sew by hand because we were making moccasins at the time.
Love the restoration but many would say you took the patina off by sanding it. But also beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so who am I to say you did wrong. I personally wouldn't have done it like that, I would have cleaned off the dirt and repaired the walking stick leaving all of its imperfections. People could then see that it has lived a life before you got it.
Agree. Some people will prefere a soft touch, others like I did, but wasn't a order from a client so I did it like I wanted and as I like it. As well, I'm not planing to sell the item. The most who will think about soft touch is because they think about value/money that they might get for it. The stick is preserved till the end and will last many years from now, eventually some patina will also came back. Cheers!
@@rustyshadesrestoration of course but as I said, I would have done the soft restoration because I prefer it that way. Not for profit its not my way. But I still liked how you did do it too. 👍👍👍👍

I love restoration. It is my living. But as restorers we have to be careful that we dont erase history. Only preserve it. Yes it is pretty. But i feel in a way you have stolen a bit if its story. A mistake i have made before. A light solvent cleaning may have been best for this. To preserve its finish and story, but make details pop again. Just a personal opinion. It is a beautiful refresh. Great work.

Does it matter in which way the polarity is orientated when plating the metals?
You should keep a good distance between the anode and cathode.
Yes polarity matters. One way metal builds up thicker plating, other way reverse polarity and metal gets thinner and disintegrates.
Very cool, nicely done.🤤
