  • Gil Ash of OSP Shooting School explains the concept of relative velocity as it applies to shotgunning and bird hunting. He says a targets speed will appear slower when the gun and the eyes properly match the speed of the target. Watch Gil's tip and start breaking more clays! (NSSF Video)

    New trap shooter here in late 2021. Your videos are still relevant as I went from 9/25 to 15/25 in 4 range sessions. Following your tips has helped greatly. I looking forward to more range time and higher scores!

    I know several people who got into sporting clays and advanced really quickly. A couple I've introduced to the sport and they're now better than me. The commonality? They were all tennis players. Think about it - they have extensive experience estimating the speed and trajectory of an object that's about the same size and is often moving about the same speed as a clay target. So they're already trained to keep their eye on the ball and do what Gil talks about in the video.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is the first and only video I've found that visually explains the leading process. I am going to show it to my son and he'll more than likely have much more success and less frustration than I did 35 years ago when I first picked up a gun and had my dad try and explain how to hit something. Much appreciated!

    Gil! Great to see you again! This may be the best explanation of barrel v target and seeing line and speed that I have ever witnessed. You are remain one of the top innovators and educators in shotgunning since my first lesson from you in 1995-6!

    This is good information and easy to understand here the way it is explained. Your analogies make good sense and help build a good understanding of what is actually going on. I have hunted with shot guns all of my life and now at 53 I have just learned that my problem with shotguns is that I always rushed off my shots and misjudged where I was actually sending my shot. Shooting clays and Dove yesterday I learned some of this and my kill ratio improved dramatically. I just found this video today and it re enforces what I learned yesterday and sheds more light on the how and why. Thx

    How do you determine lead?
    This gun is way left of the target in order to allow projectile flight time. How do you determine that?

    • @maxcohen13
      @maxcohen13 4 роки тому

      The lead is determined by the speed of the bird. There are certainly physics equations that will help you figure that out. But the average shooter just practices over and over until they start to remember how much lead to use at a given bird's speed.

    How far ahead of the target would you shoot at? Is their a rough average?
    Obviously depends on speed and distance. 1 ft 2 ft 3 ft? At 50 or 100 yards

    That's great vid, thanks for posting it!
    However, i can see myself doing this in a single shot or in the first shot in a pair.
    How can I use this technique in the second shot in a pair, where i already have the gun mounted and i'm rebounding as quick as i can to take the target before it travels too far?
    thanks for the tips!

    • @CountryFriedCG
      @CountryFriedCG 9 років тому +1

      +Adham AbouWafia to make this technique work for pairs, you have to first be able to pick up, and shoot the first bird well before it gets to the center of the field, and practice good barrel control to slow down, and begin moving the gun the other direction. If you time it right, you can pick up the second clay visually right after it crosses center.

    I would like to know if you don't look down the barreling how do you do you know were the barrel is for the proper lead. Me thinks someone is giving out bad information HA HA HA HA not really. I agree shots out to 30 or 35 yards no lead required, no need to look down the barrel. But I can't t seem to come up with proper lead without seeing barrel in relation to target. I don't mean to be critical I just don't understand. I know how to shoot I held course record at my local sporting clay course for 6 years but I still have trouble at times on long yardage tragets. Thanks for video I enjoyed it.

    • @cayseharrell4277
      @cayseharrell4277 5 років тому +1

      It's just a matter of time spent with the gun. It really does become an extension of you the more you shoot. Don't really have to think about it too much, it's just natural. I will admit that on long birds, like 50+ yards, I do consider and analyze the lead much more, especially if I'm not the 1st in rotation
