Paul Kossoff one of the greatest guitarists to have come our of the UK & a life too short on this planet. Just listen to the intensity of his playing ! Man that is the Blues ! The boy was barely over 20 years old at the time ! Forget comparisons, he was an enigma ! RIP Paul, I DUG your playing !
On this album Kossoff is the greatest blues guitarist off all time imo. It's my favourite blues album ever and one of my favourite artworks redbubble.com/i/t-shirt/Free-Tons-Of-Sobs-Shirt-by-PsychBeam/48883135.IJ6L0
i guess Im randomly asking but does anyone know of a method to log back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly forgot my password. I love any tips you can give me.
I had the extreme pleasure of playing a couple of songs with Koss at the Nags head on Putney bridge in 1968, he was a very very fine blues player, he had so much emotion in his playing, many years after I spent an afternoon and evening with his Dad David Kossof through my work, he was very interested in how I had met his son and quizzed me on quite a lot of details, an intense and very spiritual man who loved his son how every man should, he was immensely proud of his sons achievements, I was privalidged to have met hem both!...RIP Paul and David Kossof
Thank you Vanessa, yes he remains one of my favourite blues players, I also got to meet Rory Gallagher in about 1969, the band I played in at that time ( SWAWRB) were supporting TASTE at a gig in Hertfordshire U.k, we we're blessed to all arrive at the gig in the afternoon and spent a couple of hours in the pub with TASTE and Rory's brother Donal, they were all very nice guys and quite humble, Rory was quietly spoken and respectful, we did gigs with a lot of the top bands of those times, i.e FAMILY, SAVOY BROWN, T.REX, SLADE, CHICKEN SHACK, SOFT MACHINE, FREDDIE KING, SPOOKY TOOTH, EDGAR BROUGHTON, SAM APPLE PIE, KEVIN COYNE etc, in 1966 I played in a London based band with John Cann who later went on to become famous with ATOMIC ROOSTER, John was a good guitarist back then and I knew he would get on, I liked him he had a good sense of humour. Back to Paul Kossoff he influenced a lot of guitarists but I never heard anyone who could bend strings to produce the vibrato effect as good as Koss, sadly missed along with Rory! Best wishes Kevin
Kevin OBrien You’re showing off now Kevin 😂😂 No, what lovely memories to have, it really sounds like an amazing time you had. I’m a fan of a lot of 60’s/70’s bands, I was born in ‘75 but I was raised on these amazing bands and I have my lovely mum to thank for that. She seen some of the bands before they were famous - The Who, The Stones and more, I can’t remember which ones though as sadly she’s no longer with us, but I loved hearing her stories of how she and her friends snuck out to see them all.
The thing is Vanessa,it's just the way it was in the !ate 60s/70s, if I wasn't actually playing myself I was out watching bands always at weekends and maybe in the week too, music was my life, and many more people like me!, there were many venues those days, pubs and clubs everywhere and lots of good bands about, I saw Hendrix three times and all in London, saw John Mayall with Clapton, Green, Taylor, I was a regular at the Marquee club in London for several years and it was a great place to see bands, I went there countless times and saw many great bands before they hit the big time ( even Led Zep, booked as the Yardbirds) including Ten Years After, Fleetwood Mac, Jethro Tull, The Who,Yes( could be a bit boring) but such a great club, never any trouble there, never sold alcohol as I remember??, You were born in 75 the same as one of my daughters ( Angie) named after the Rolling Stones record!, In those days their were free festivals at Hyde Park and other parks, I bet I crossed paths with your mum if she lived anywhere near London!! Anyway I've said enough?? Take care Kevin.
Kevin OBrien Oh you very might well have done, that’s where she used to go, The Marquee. She died in 2007, I bet she’d love to watch all of these old videos, well I know she would, she loved all of these so much. She gave me her collection of a set of ‘60’s rock magazines (can’t remember the name of them - I’m sure you’d know), they’ve been lost somewhere along the line though which I’m gutted about. They were all in colour and nice and glossy I’d love to hear more of your stories. My friend and I used to go to the Half Moon in Putney and Herne Hill about 20 years ago, mainly cover bands but we used to have a great night
Still one of the Best Blues tunes I've ever heard. What a brilliant hand they were & will remain. Blues straight from the core of their souls, bled from their hearts. Often without equal, never without the true spirit to say it as it is. They remain one of my most loved Brit Blues exponents, from 'Tons of Sobs', a great title for a Blues explosion blast off, with their average age, still 'teenagers' & what collective talent. Some may pass away, but never actually depart. ❤ Much like their legacy 🎉😊
Saw this band twice in my home town of Sunderland in ‘69 and ‘70. Saw many others also including Zeppelin and now looking back and evaluating them all these 4 young lads knock spots off them all. An incredible band and so young at the time. Rodgers far and away the greatest British rock and blues singer ever.
The first time I saw them, nobody had ever heard of them - they were booked merely on someone's recommendation. Only about 20 people turned up! One of life's milestones - Andy Fraser was just 16 at the time... The Gin Mill Club in Godalming, if anyone remembers.
A lot of people heard of them... All Right Now was a #1 hit in the US and got lots of airplay on classic rock radio afterwards.... However, beyond that, you're right, the band didn't really get its due, especially the bluesier album stuff. Mostly appreciated by musicians, overlooked by rock fans in general.
80 years old , and still get goose bumbs with Paul Kossoff's virbratos! Never heard anyone get close! Andy's bass is powerful and direct along with Kirks Drums and the best voice in the Buisness Paul Rogers , what you have is one of the best bands ever!
Weren't Bruce & Fraser from the same era i.e. might Fraser have influenced Bruce? Bruce is Scottish, Fraser is a Scottish name - were they both from Scotland/Glasgow?
I agree with you he had groove or soul (Koss would say a modern blues feel). This gave Free a funky, pop, Rock & Roll edge; for example All Right Now always holds its own at the disco. Bruce is much more old school swing jazz shuffle groove oriented (compare the Free version of Crossroad Blues with Cream's to hear the different groove approach).
Very well put. It's frustrating when the youth of today tell you they've never heard of the greats. Paul K I witnessed in a club in London in 1968 - always had his mouth open in agony when he played a solo -that was his trade mark - his vibrato was the best
Sounds even better 50 YEARS LATER!!! Thank You God for at one time blessing us with REAL MUSICIANS who poured their hearts and souls into what they were doing and gave us actual, honest to God REAL MUSIC....and it doesn't get much better than this. Bonnie and Stevie WHO???
I wore out my stylus on this album. Was fortunate enough to see Free on a few occasions the last being the Isle of Wight 1970, but they did quite a short set and did not play many songs. I actually wrote to the bassist Andy Fraser about one of the gigs I saw them at the Farx Club in Potters Bar (He wrote back to me and remembered that one!) and I wish I could get those images out of my head on to UA-cam. This was a band totally on fire and playing in totally harmony with each other. Cannot begin to explain how lucky and privileged I have been to see Free, one hell of a band, all of them.
I had a nice chat with the boys outside the fish and chip shop in Portsmouth when we were waiting for the ferry. Always approachable in those far off days before Twitter and Instagram and 'slebs'....
Wow, what a brilliant band Free were, I bought this album in 1969 and still have it. Their raw blues sound on this track still sounds fresh even after 50 years. Thanks for the post.
Ah Somebody asked has anyone heard of this band! Well I discovered Free age 16, Im now 60 and still love listening to then so much....unbelievable guitar and amazing base which I love and the vocals so good.. Ive gone on to see and love Zeppelin, Hendrix, and more recently Foo fighters, Joe Bonamassa, Scott Mckeown and many more but still come back to Free... One of the best bands of all time ..
My all time favourite band. They had it all & in the end, had nothing at all. Brilliant musicians. It was so sad that they finished before fulfilling their massive potential!
Your so right, its gone and may never come again and I'm old now but I got to be there in the sixties and seventies when all that great music ruled so I say I'm blessed.
Over 50 years since this recording.... and still sounds Fresh!! -- Apart from that Rodgers and Kirke are still together (Bad Company)...but Free always had something Bad-Co didn't quite achieve.....I guess that was Koss ☻
Koss and Andy Fraser both. It's worth reading Andy Fraser's book, All Right Now, to realise how important he was in Free (and it's not just him saying it). I love Bad Co, but...
Fraser bassline + Kossof vibrato on a LP just plugged in a Marshall amp + Rodgers = you have the full blues-Rock package, nothing else come close, they were just unreal, raw power, sheeeeeers everytime, tha vibrato is just one of a kind, that powerful voice to die for, that chemistry among the 4 members... FREE the best rock-blues band ever. Nothing else.
Depends how old you are. I remember them very well. Strange, because I didn't think much of them at the time. "All Right Now", was too pop, too commercial for me at the time. 40 years later, a new awakening.
NOT Guy Stevens on piano!! He probably couldn't play a note. It was a guy called Steve Miller (not the American Steve Miller). I think he was from some other band on the Island label, but I've forgotten which.
Love the sweet sweet sound of those humbucking dual coil pick-ups on a solid body axe wielded by a TRUE BLUESMAN! Especially Dr. Paul Kossof! RockSteadyEveryBody!!! ];{) Peace!
I saw Free by accident in Redcar Jazz club now gone. We had planned to go to see Jethro Tull that night but apparently they got deterred or that’s what they said so as Free were still in the area they came on. Kossoff was the first live guitarist I had ever seen so not a bad start I would say. With Roger’s vocals Frasers thumping bass backed by the reliable Kirk, well it blew my hippy socks off. Went out next day for the album I think it was called you can all join in a collaboration only for the one track of Free I’m a mover, I was then hooked until Tons of Sobs, well what can I say great band and Roger’s is still filling venues 😮
awesome cover of a blues classic, i do love free. glad paul rodgers is still around, really the best rocker still alive.his new album the royal sessions, magic.heard the album 3 times already in the last 2 days,it is that good.
Ya know I first saw these guys at a gig in 1969 at a small club near where I live Peterlee, England when I was 16, followed them all over the place, small clubs, big venues, they just blew you away, so 4kin talented with old blues/rock songs, even made the charts with Alright now etc., but this song and others like Walk in my Shadow, Woman etc., classics, Koss's guitar licks, Andy's bass, Simon's beat and Rodgers voice, FFS what a great time we had listening and watching them perform at packed houses, thank you Free !
I only heard this for the 1st time last year. This came out March 69. Led Zeps 1st album came out Jan 69. How did I miss this?.IMO the guitar is intense n better than Pages I Can't Quit You Babe as far as blues licks is concerned. ..I like both songs.
OMG! was listening to bad company and decided to do some research. I never heard of free before. these guys are just as soulful as van Morrison and led zeppelin yet I rarely see any of their music out there.
it's because this music is not heard anymore. even radio stations that play rock music, play the same and the same bands or songs. They don't know or care for gems like this to be heard.....
they play suckass radio friendly music over an over , they did it so when hip hop and rap came on it was refreshing'', not that it was talent or even music hell', called brainwashing''
Bad Company were a watered down, commercial version of Free; lacking the blues and soul of Paul Kossoff and Andy Fraser. To me, the very best tracks from the first six (Paul Rodgers) Bad Company albums would make just one great album; not too bothered about the rest of their songs. All of the Free albums were wonderful.
Russ B, I don't remember playing at the club in Potters bar but I do know that some of the members of Paul's previous group Black Cat Bones came from around that area.
Ohyehh! Forgeting for a while the present and going to the past, uhh ohyehhh!! We all have historys and one of them was with Free sounds. My bad, tell other day, sorry but i really have to go! Shi.! love you Free for ever. man!!!
This band is the BOMB! I spent many an hour listening to them back in the days of my youth. Some of the best sounds to come out of the era of ROCK N FUCKING ROLL that helped me get laid every night.
Hi Vanessa, the coloured magazine in the 60s could have been the BEAT INSTRUMENTAL, it was the only one I can think of, it was monthly and a good read, I mostly used to buy the Melody Maker( weekly) as that had all the gigs in for all over the country, I know Herne hill and most of South London as I was born there and had relatives over there, one of our Roadies lived at Streatham and for a while I worked with a Welsh Bass player who lived in Balham, and also a girl singer who lived in Forest Hill, and a guitarist Dave Bunce who lived in Eltham ( he joined a good band called UPP and toured America with Jeff Beck, and an organist Alan Parkes who lived in Bexley heath haha I could go on and on!....believe it or not there were a few more from South of the river, I have lived in Essex since I was two but I used to know London pretty well !, You obviously loved your mum so cherish your memories and enjoy them too, I'm sure she lives on in your heart !!
We looked at the world as a rocket in the sky and gave caution to operettas’ musicians to free us. However the spirit is still there, waiting to be recognized and conscious again and again until it is everywhere in elevation to the Paradise of Utopians and other unconscious dreamers!
Paul Kossoff is smoking hot 🔥... He is definitely up there with Peter Green, Eric Clapton , Robin Trower and so many other guitarists that came out of the UK
First comes Paul kossoff, then everyone else can get in line.

Not sure he was as old as 20 when he recorded this, 18 or 19 maybe.
Born 1950, he was seventeen still.
i guess Im randomly asking but does anyone know of a method to log back into an Instagram account..?

Lucky You! What a great memory!
All thanks to Geoff Docherty. We were spoilt for choice
so glad i got to see Andy in John Mayall's band and then Free so live so many times..
Ken Nee Yes, they were great times mate. Great performers
Haway Archie! Summed them up perfectly 👌
The first time I saw them, nobody had ever heard of them - they were booked merely on someone's recommendation. Only about 20 people turned up! One of life's milestones - Andy Fraser was just 16 at the time... The Gin Mill Club in Godalming, if anyone remembers.

"Tons of Sobs", one of the BEST debut albums of this genre ! "Nuff Said" !
Never forget when I bought this LP couldn’t stop playing it
Andy Fraser. One of the most talented bass players - musicians. RIP
You can tell Jack Bruce was a big influence on his playing. They have really similar styles.
Weren't Bruce & Fraser from the same era i.e. might Fraser have influenced Bruce? Bruce is Scottish, Fraser is a Scottish name - were they both from Scotland/Glasgow?

I’ve been playing bass since the early 70s but always pick up new licks from Andy Fraser. What fun he must have! He’s just too much!!
I was 17 when I first got my hands on Fire and Water on a 8 track and wore that son of a bitch out!
Very well put. It's frustrating when the youth of today tell you they've never heard of the greats. Paul K I witnessed in a club in London in 1968 - always had his mouth open in agony when he played a solo -that was his trade mark - his vibrato was the best

what a debut album; it made them the toughest british blues combo of them all.
Wow, what a brilliant band Free were, I bought this album in 1969 and still have it. Their raw blues sound on this track still sounds fresh even after 50 years. Thanks for the post.
Cool yeah 😊😊
Paul Rodgers is from my home town of Middlesbrough! ...also, this song is amazing. Surprised it doesn't have more views, this thing is a masterpiece!
Ah Somebody asked has anyone heard of this band!

Ive gone on to see and love Zeppelin, Hendrix, and more recently Foo fighters, Joe Bonamassa, Scott Mckeown and many more but still come back to Free...
One of the best bands of all time ..
I think you just slammed them.
Free & Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, two great bands,
Absolutely the best . No band comes close.
A heavy blues masterpiece.
My all time favourite band. They had it all & in the end, had nothing at all. Brilliant musicians. It was so sad that they finished before fulfilling their massive potential!
Love Kossoff sound, so raw and bluesy. This is one of the best bands ever. Loaded with talent
The average age of Free when this was recorded was slightly less than 18! That is mind-blowing, super talented foursome!!!!
It's my favourite blues album ever and one of my favourite artworks redbubble.com/i/t-shirt/Free-Tons-Of-Sobs-Shirt-by-PsychBeam/48883135.IJ6L0
Andy Fraser was 16 - just old enough to leave school!
18 yrs old Koss, playing like that, unreal.
Why did it take me more than 50 years to listen to this album? Holy crap, is it awesome!
Listening to these great bands and musicians are nostalgia and sadness, because today is not made quality music.
Your so right, its gone and may never come again and I'm old now but I got to be there in the sixties and seventies when all that great music ruled so I say I'm blessed.
Aww... That bluesy Gibson Les Paul
sounds the way it's supposed to.
Best version of "Goin' Down slow" I've ever heard ! Koss on his Axe is mind boggling.
Heard that guitar explode after the piano intro when I was 11 years old and I was hooked ever since. Great great band. Thanks for posting!
What good music they used to do!
So happy to find all these pearls here!
How good is this..... want it played at my passing.
I am a big Howlin Wolf Fan but this is the One, Paul Rodgers voice and Paul Kossoff`s guitar are simply the best.
Check out The Steepwater Band's version; might make a convert out of you :)
Les Paul..beautiful sound.played by a legend..kossof ❤. Bless u man...😊😊😊
Les Paul Kossoff :)
Im 29 and just realised i wasted alot of my life, not knowing about this kind of greatness this band delivered
ENJOY ERIC ,I'M 70 YEARS OLD AND I'VE SEEN THEM PLAY. STILL LISTEN TO THIS GREAT BAND EVERY WEEK. WHEN I DIE THEY MUST PLAY 'BE MY FRIEND'
Try being 53, a hard rock guy all my life and somehow missed all this greatness too. Shit, I’ve got them until my dying day now so that’s good right.
It’s never too late to find greatness, thankfully you found them
@@vc23 Greatness is not found but recognized once it is inside of us. Once we have achieved a certain degree of evolution and sensibility.

That vibrato is from another planet, koss is an alien
BEST BAND EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Simply the best band ever koss was so fucin unique
The best
All hail the God of tone and vibrato
thank you, thank you ... Blues and Free will never die.

Amazing! That sound blows my mind
soooo friggin good...!!!!!! love Free !!!!
Classic 12-bar slow blues - superb pace, superb solos!
magic cover of a blues classic, free the kings of blues rock. the feels for this track is insane. paul rodgers wow pure raw magic singer.
That guitar solo transport you out of this world!!!!
The song that flies closest to the sun.
Koss does that 'calling' sound, typical of early blues players. The late great Guy Stevens on piano too.
Yeah. I take those 4 musicians over anyone.
NOT Guy Stevens on piano!! He probably couldn't play a note. It was a guy called Steve Miller (not the American Steve Miller). I think he was from some other band on the Island label, but I've forgotten which.

Love this music, rock with that bluesy sound! cool!
Free with Bad Company Simply Fantástic 🎵🎼🎶🎤🎸😎👊🎵🎼🎶🎤🎸😎👊
Perhaps the most intense blues ever!! Can't get over it ❤️❤️
Love the sweet sweet sound of those humbucking dual coil pick-ups on a solid body axe wielded by a TRUE BLUESMAN! Especially Dr. Paul Kossof! RockSteadyEveryBody!!! ];{) Peace!
A very similar sound to Savoy Brown's first album. Another great British blues band featuring a criminally underrated guitarist in Kim Simmonds.
Savoy Brown is the shit! Love Blue Matter and Street Corner Talking.
What a gem!!!!
Pretty damn good band! They kick ass!😊❤❤❤
Koss just 18 yrs old, what a class act.

OMG Free was my fav band when I was 14
I discovered them when I was 14; sadly 7 years after they broke up. They are still my favourite band. Nobody else comes close.
Tone and vibrato,by Koss with his Les Paul in Plexi, here, is HOLY GRAIL of hard blues rock tone with Gibson guitars.
the talent these guys had Amazing !!
Paul Rogers -no nos deja de sorprender, con su excelente interpretacion de este blues ,legendario.

Wonderful to see my old friend Lucy Piller's photo's.
Great album great song great band...
I only heard this for the 1st time last year. This came out March 69. Led Zeps 1st album came out Jan 69. How did I miss this?.IMO the guitar is intense n better than Pages I Can't Quit You Babe as far as blues licks is concerned. ..I like both songs.
barr
Kossoff's left hand was so wicked.
Right as well !
I'm Speechless 🎸🔊🤘🙏
Now that's a fuckin' guitar tone!!!
Isso é que é uma porra de um timbre de guitarra!!!
Just ....Damn.. HOT DAMN.
OMG! was listening to bad company and decided to do some research. I never heard of free before. these guys are just as soulful as van Morrison and led zeppelin yet I rarely see any of their music out there.
I have a life and I'm 30.
it's because this music is not heard anymore. even radio stations that play rock music, play the same and the same bands or songs.
Amazing tone from the ol Koss
No one can live with this so raw
That piano struck me harder than a lightning on a storm
Talent is timeless
now that i grew older i think that is the best free album
I'm Going down Slow! R.L.
Amazing band and a great song, showcasing all 4 of the band's talents. So is it Paul Rogers playing that bluesy piano I wonder?
Check out the Howling Wolf version. It doesn't have a lot of guitar playing but it has a spoken part by Willie Dixon that'll crack you up.
Kossoff was 18 and Fraser was 16 when this was recorded!!!!!!!!
Listen to Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac-great blues!!!
Joe M I think Andy was only 14 when he started with Free.
I believe Greeny and Koss were two of the greatest "feel" guitarists ever.
They don't play that in today's radio
stations except KDHX.
Fantastic!!
Mr. Paul Francis Kossoff 😢
Mr. Andy Fraser Rip 😢
Free 0 % Playback 100 % Talent ⚡️🔥😎
That's the way yer' do it x
Love Free! The Best Blues&Rock Band! Way Better Than Zeppeplin!
changed music forever
We looked at the world as a rocket in the sky and gave caution to operettas’ musicians to free us. However the spirit is still there, waiting to be recognized and conscious again and again until it is everywhere in elevation to the Paradise of Utopians and other unconscious dreamers!
Seventeen year old Paul Kossoff, brilliant!
Awesome
Thanks!
Paul Kossoff is smoking hot 🔥... He is definitely up there with Peter Green, Eric Clapton , Robin Trower and so many other guitarists that came out of the UK
Just think if he was to have lived we might have been saying Clapton who
