      It's not very strong. It is never really an issue, I have been using a Simagic Alpha mini and more recently a Cammus 15nm DD wheelbase and I thought if I went back I would feel the inferior performance of the csldd but honestly I could be happy using it as a forever base even after experiencing a DD1/Cammus/alpha mini. :)

    Since I won't have to deal with mounting my own CSL DD until at least January(!), I don't have first-hand experience with the T-nuts, but I believe that the best way to mount it is to mount the T-nuts loosely on the mounting plate and then slide the CSL DD base on to the loose nuts. Then you tighten them. I've seen this method used in various videos, including one from the Fatatec channel. I think it is even better than spring loaded T-nuts because you don't need to try to place the nuts exactly in the CSL DD and then line it up on the plate.

    • @DouglasThompson
      @DouglasThompson  2 роки тому +1

      I realized this after I made this video...I even made a mention of it in past videos on that method being easier to mount your gear with...I think it still would be better to have included spring loaded t-nuts but it was never a huge issue to begin with just one of those cheap out moments I see Fanatec taking part in often.

    • @SlyNine

    So let me get this straight, it has no physical stops at all? like it just turns forever when its turned off? That is kind of crazy and seems like a major oversight.
    Would you recommend this or the CSL V2.5?

    • @DouglasThompson
      @DouglasThompson  2 роки тому

      The CSL DD definitely.
      Having no physical stops is what gives it more flexibility. It just doesn't have enough torque to let you feel where it is if you like heavy ffb. At some settings it's not a problem and as I said in a previous statement, unless you are doing a bus simulator or a trucking game, it is rare you would have to go lock to lock. I suppose drifting would go lock to lock but I don't think drifters like heavy ffb.

      All DD wheels are the same: no physical bump stop. Any ways, every car you're driving have different degrees of rotation, so if you put your stops for street cars, they will be useless for race cars, and conversely: bumping for race cars will prevent you from having full rotation for your street cars, drift, trucks, and so on.

      I live it for the price. I got 2 of them one for the rig and one for my car for 300 dollars shipped. The price has gone up a bit but I still think you can find the combo on eBay for 350 last I checked.
      The padding on the butt area could be a little bit beefed up bu it's nothing some extra foam can't handle.

  • @angryginger791
    @angryginger791 2 роки тому +2

    #2 and #4 should be fixed, but the others are basically compromises you have to make to get a DD base for $350. I think the boost kit is so expensive because they are using it to make up for a slim margin on the standard base. Kind of a weak way to do it, Imo. I think they'd have been better off making the standard base $400 and the boost kit for a c-note. Does the software have any settings for the stop? My simucube has settings for degrees of rotation (to set it a little before or after the in-game rotation) and I can adjust how hard it stops. They may be able to fix that with a software patch.

    • @DouglasThompson
      @DouglasThompson  2 роки тому +1

      It's better now that I have adjusted my ffb to accommodate the weak stop. It's nowhere near as bothersome as it was at first but still a large factor I would bring up if someone asked what I didn't like about it.

    I have a CSW 2.5 and that has the much more secure USB "B" connection, having said that I have securely cable tied all cables from the wheelbase to my rig. I have noticed that on the drive shaft of the CSL DD there is no "O" ring. That was there to stop wheel rattle, I think. Flex between the wheel and the shaft may lead to connector pin/socket problems between the wheel and base.

      This is the 8nm version and it would be much more of an issue with a 5nm power supply. The CSL elite was a weaker overall design but it could have less newton meters of torque because there were built in hard stops. good honest review of the product, we knew if it was going to be cheaper that it was going to be CHEAPER LOL . I AM VERY WORRIED THAT THAT TINY LITTLE BOX IS GOING TO GET OVERHEATED . and yes the connection fatigue on the shaft bearing will be a problem over time. it is a product designed with a market price point designed to compete with Logetec and thrustmaster I think both of those units will give this DD a run for its money especially which is five Nm as standard torque. without spending more money .. also the pedal set is a standard potentiometer unit which we know are nothing but crap and fail constantly and you have to pay the extra money for the upgrade to a digital unit ,,, again more extra money.
    my advice is to buy the CSL Elite with v2 pedal set a shifter and hand break. I purchased one of the BMW wheels with the Alcântara and I'm not sorry I did i love the hefty feel. buying PlayStation buttons might be possible again unless the new DD has permanent non changeable button covers right now all you can buy is ps stickers not button caps. and the kicker i own 3 full csl systems with custom wheels and my only worry is something will break and i will have to deal with Fanatecs world renowned customer service nightmares.their own blogs are full of pissed off customers ,not a happy place lol. so lets see if this little unit can meet our expectations we do need more sim manufacturers so that compilations between them can give us better products and customer service . once you have customer service that's really good your competitors have to deal with that I can't tell you to get fucked anymore " we got your email ,we will get back to you shortly" wtf lol yea their first response after 2 weeks is we got your email.hahahahahahaha. I LOVE my fanatec gear but i would like some other price point options . hey someone in the US please start a sim manufacturing company let's fix the arrogant "you get this" environment that gamers have to live with right now. everyone being stuck at home with Cove it was great for Sim racing and now it's taking off like crazy and it's only gonna continue to grow so someone get on it please MADE IN THE USA.

    Ok so what I understand is that CSL DD 5 Nm is the same as the 8 Nm just that there is some power adapter to it imbetween the connectors? I see why that is a bit annoying but also super smart, more budget limited people can still get the amazing product and later down the road get the kit to bring new life into their wheelbase.
    Did I understand that correct?

    • @DouglasThompson
      @DouglasThompson  2 роки тому +1

      Not quite. There is no adapter in between. When you purchase the CSL DD you either buy it with a lower wattage output power supply or a slightly higher wattage power supply.
      They reused the same power supply as the CSL elite wheelbase but changed the connector so you can't just buy a CSL elite power supply without having to also rewire the power supply.
      The new weaker power supply is not one I know, it did not exist in the previous generation of wheelbases as far as I know. It seems they brought in a new weaker power supply that allows them to throttle the NM output of the CSL DD, the only purpose in introducing this new weaker power supply is to limit the power and make your CSL DD feel inferior. That way you are more inclined to get the larger power supply for 150.00+ tax/shipping.
      They actually WANT you to resist buying the more powerful power supply at first because if you can convince yourself 5nm is enough and then you become dissatisfied later, that means they are able to charge you MORE for the power supply AND look like the good guys by offer people both "Options"...
      Keep in mind the introduced and all new power supply with a sole purpose to limit the CSL DD's power output when the already had the "8nm power supply" on hand due to it being the same power supply as the previous generation belt driven wheelbase, the CSL elite. And they killed the second hand market of CSL elite power supply's being sold on ebay and such by changing the connector so you can't repurpose a CSL elite power suppl. That way they can charge as much as they would like for the "upgrade" and justify the insane price when it probably costs them no more than 5-10 dollars per power supply.
      Don't think they did this as a favor.
      This is the same company that lied and said one of the reasons they fragmented their product and provided options at checkout was to help fight e-waste...
      How are they helping e-waste when their entire marketing strategy is to make you feel like you constantly need a higher output power supply? How worthless is the 5nm power supply? Who wants that? If you own a 5nm output power supply why would you ever buy another 5nm ps? Once you "upgrade" to an 8nm power supply, why would you ever need your 5nm power supply? It becomes e-waste at that point.
      They should have never brought a separate power supply into the equation, they should have sold the 8nm version for 349.99. the whole reason they switched to direct drive for the entry level product is because it's easier and cheaper to manufacture. They even admit to automating the manufacturing process. So they are saving money and they are able to pump out more units quickly but yet we pay 150 dollars more for a product that is able to output 2 more NM with the same power supply as the previous generation? Are we to believe all these years of innovation were worthless and we should get an equivalent experience as the previous generation for the same price or should we expect a better overall product for our money each generation?
      Anyway, sorry for the wall of text but it upsets me how Fanatecs market strategy is so anti-consumer...it screams "milking" and "nickel and diming"...
      It's still a great product and I can recommend it but I don't want to paint a picture of a company that is doing you any favors.

    • @messiahshow
      @messiahshow 2 роки тому +1

      @@DouglasThompsonCounter wall of text lol
      I absolutely understand what you saying, what I would like them to introduce and I kinda thought this might be a start of that which it isn't and that is the chance to upgrade as you grow with your unit. Let's say you buy a CSL DD 8 Nm but then 12 Nm is the same base it's just some slight upgrade kit you get to push it further in performance. That way you could grow with your unit but I think they will never do that because they would sell less new units.
      You're also right with what you said that cost goes down each generation and the model that was expensive and "ok'ish" previous generation should be improved and be cheaper next generation. So yes, the 8 Nm should have costed 350€ or whatever it is they charge for the 5 Nm now instead.
      It seems like some of these sim manufacturers complicate things more than necessary and make their products inaccessible with complicated extras like this booster kit for instance or extra load kits, hydralic kits and other crap that should just be in the damn box from the start since this shit is not cheap to begin with. I see so much extra add-ons to everything especially fanatic stuff so it becomes very confusing what you really need and what you get originally on the unit you're buying. You also start to question if every piece of equipment in it's "standard" form is dogshit since you can always add extra better things to it which is not sending good signals of the product you just put in your shopping cart. If I order a Huesinkveld pedal, well guess what I just order that nothing extra, it have the good stuff right there and that gives me as a customer comfort even though those pedals are insanely expensive.
      At Fanatic you pay quite a premium for their higher end gear but still get 2-3 extra choices for improvement at checkout which further make the unit 100€ or so more expensive. I have no real idea what it is or if I need it or if some of the parts are pre-installed on my more expensive unit already. It pisses me off more than it make me excited for the product I'm buying. It almost feels like they want you to accidentally order some crap that you don't need for your setup and instructions are bad overall what the extras do and if they are pre-installed or not. I know I have been recommended to put the booster kit in my shopping cart even if I already put the CSL DD 8 Nm in there and that is that setup I talked about, like they just want you to fill the shopping cart with things you already have by default on your unit in the shopping cart.
      I also saw mounting brackets for 250€ for the DD 1 and DD 2, in what world is 2 metal pieces to mount a fucking Wheelbase worth 250€, are they made out of gold and titanium? So this sim stuff have sadly turned into a little bit of a snob sport already where people are ready to pay way more than they actually should because a lot of this technology is not that complicated to warrant a price tag of 250-500€ for every little thing you need in your rig.
      So I get your frustration man I truly do.

      @DouglasThompson  2 роки тому +1

      Well the boost kit is a pricing issue so it could easily be corrected in the future with discounts and such. The USB c connection is not my favorite but I have a full motion rig and the way I set up my monitor stand is one that can touch the rear connections so I have to always be mindful of that small connection getting crushed which forces me to have to push my monitor stand back further than I'd like. It's something that seems it didn't have to be like that, I wish the CSL DD had the same USB connection as the podium DD1/dd2. The weak stop is an immersion breaker but as I said it really only factors in if you crashed anyway but it does remind me I am not in a real car especially in VR. The reason this is the biggest deal to me is because it's not something Fanatec can fix, it has to do with the max output of the motor the entire unit is designed around. Even the USB connection could be swapped out pretty easy. Anyway that's why my list is as it is. :)

    Ya lost me at "USB-C is not robust enough". It's one of the best cables to actually be using to interface a device in 2021 and 2022. It's rapidly becoming a one-cable solution, and the entire reason it's that way is because the USB-C connector is durable enough to stand the test of time. Don't know about you, but I've never had a single USB-C connector on any device, male or female, fail on me.
    If anything, the RJ11 connectors are more flimsy since one good tug and the wires are ripped out of the connector. With USB-C, a tug just pulls the cable out of the receptacle.
    For issues 3 and 1, I'll keep an eye out for those when my GT DD arrives. My bundle has the boost kit, so 5 doesn't apply, and I have a huge supply of M6 bolts so 4 doesn't apply to me.

    If I press FFB test button in the Fanatec configuration software with the CLS ELite, it shakes the wheel so violently that I need two hands to hold it and I am litterally worried it will damage itself. Only thing is the absence of the FFB deadzone on the CLS Elite near the top position. That's nice. Lol that's a good thought but no I mostly got it for weight reasons and the fact I never go above 8ish nm. I REALLY love the CSL DD. I wanted to hate it so bad cause Fanatec pissed me off but also knew Fanatec can put out really quality products. I strongly dislike Fanatecs marketing team and customer service. The DD1 is 34+ lbs at the very top of my rig and the CSL DD is less than half the weight. I am planning on selling my DD1 but I still can't quite make myself do it. I have never actually used the DD1 at full power other than just to feel what it was like. It wasn't fun and it wasn't practical for the type of racing I do primarily.
      I have always been fascinated by things that outperform the big dogs and this is definitely a much better price/performance item for what I do. I actually have been really digging the Simagic Alpha Mini but the problem I keep thinking about is how many USB ports I have available. Currently I am using every USB port on my PC and because my GPU is very large, it covers up the second pci-e slot so I am not able to get a usb expansion card. Having Fanatec pedals, handbrake and shifter all connected to a Fanatec wheelbase made a lot of sense for me.
      Anyway, just thought I'd bring some clarity to the situation. I hope that answers your question!

      Also If you haven't already, I made a video series on this wheelbase, I made a review and I made a "5 things the CSL DD does better" video as well. No point in only talking about the good things when people are trying to figure out if a product is for them or not! ;)

      @@Galluk.o I've had no issues with oscillations. What settings are you using? I usually use a lot of wheel friction and quite a bit of dampening trying to replicate my real cars.

    One really bad thing about it is, how flimsy the connectors at the back. I had mine a couple of days and I'd only just got my rig setup so i hadn't cable tied all the cables yet. I got my foot caught on the pedal connector cable while getting out of my rig and yanked the cable. It completely pulled out all of the connector for the pedals. Sure my fault for not sorting my cables out, but for the money it costs noway should it of broken so easily.

      Yes I agree, all sjmracing companies need to start switching over to more robust connections imo.
