Rest in peace, Kirky. Man this one hurt. Ground-breaking pioneers. They were making proto-techno in the late 70s/early 80s. I used to LOVE them, they helped me thru a very difficult childhood - wracked with pain, they offered me an oasis of happiness, a sliver of solace. Growing up in the states, I remember the fight, the battle, to try to get our hands on ONE MORE hard to find import 12" single or album of theirs. But u know what? The work that it took made it all the sweeter when we finally got it onto our turntable. Man were those times great. But now, one-by-one, the lights are going out, we are leaving the party. So sad, but those that experienced them will cherish those days in our hearts forever, and sip the memories like fine wine that has aged well. Thanks for all the good times Kirk and Mallinder. Legends.
I had a dream about Cabaret Voltaire, and some invite said let's be funny, let's make music. Not many will ever get it, but those that do are enough. I was invited to their party, but I was stressed out to the max. I knew I loved their music, but wasn't sure about them, in person. I went, and I mustered enough energy to walk around, and I just quickly woke up, never knowing if I experienced anything special, whatsoever, and I just somehow knew I never did find anything special. I will always love their music, that is a promise from the real me.
Damn dude, thanks for sharing. Well stated, and Hapax had the same positive effect on me. There are definitely artists that emulate and create similar music as Cabaret Voltaire does. Check out Buzz Kull, High Functioning Flesh, and an album titled Seedstate from a band called Head Of David. It sounds like a cross between Nitzer Ebb, Cabaret Voltaire and Godflesh.
I also listened to them during some hard times in the mid to late '80s. Radio died out for me around 1986 and I began to dive deeper into some bands' back catalogues. I always liked them and went to see them play the Palace in Hollywood in May 1985. I was right down front. I always had a bit of a thing for Mal. Great night!
Most of this decade was integral to my not going into full fledged depression ( though I did) by keeping me in a state of artistic energy and curiosity. It was a bittersweet time
The real fascination was at the age when I danced to the song and waited for it in the clubs, since then, even though I love my two sons very much, there has never been a more beautiful time in my life than this. Nothing like the 80s.
Funny thing is there were 3 excellent songs with the title "Fascination" in 1983, this one, the one by the Human League, and another one by an obscure group called Perfect Zebras.

Wow, this is the first time I’m hearing the recorded version! I really love the live version and it’s great to finally hear this 🎉I’m 59 and I never had the pleasure of hearing this when it came out! TY UA-cam and people who upload great music GREAT MUSIC ❤
I got into these when I was about 15 and heard Nag Nag Nag on Peel in about 1980 and it blew me away. Always so ahead of the curve. Never tainted by popularism. RIP RHK. A great loss.
Greatest band no one knows about..."Voice of America" on the college radio station in the early eighties turned me on to a whole new world of music....
@@68404 While I do love a whole hell of a lot of 80s smash hit songs it's obvious how shitty the fact that 90% of those "80s nights" won't play anything considered remotely un-popular by even hit artists. Men Without Hats, Tears for Fears, etc. You'll never hear "I got the Message" or even "Pale Shelter" in the USA. The pure concentration on big hits of the 80s exclusively has also led to giving the era's popular musical acts a negative reputation in the "serious music consumer" demographic.
great memories of gigs all over uk in late 70's and early 80's.....as others have said, the lights are going out one by one, leaving just the outline of those wonderfully colourful and delicious times
In the early days of MTV in the USA, there were a few other channels that played music videos. One played the longer versions of Cab songs with the video... I was hooked! All music videos of the time were less than 4 minutes... Cab videos went on for 20+ minutes.
My mate Eddie, long ago, tried to convince me, to no avail, that the Cabs were the future. Eddie, you were so right and I was so wrong! This is timeless.
I bought all their vinyl as soon as I heard voice of America.so much of it will always be ahead of the rest.a small amount just didn't do it for me.nag nag nag will always be my fave.i thought as a teenager I was the only fan back then with no Internet to share it all with.forever pioneers and never out done
"The Deuce" brought me here. I actually know this song from my college days back in the '80s, but it showed up in a scene and I had to forward it to some folks...
Around time this was posted a decade later I wonder how my 20 year old self was thinking of the 80’s and the past now I’m berly thinking and I wonder what he would of thought of me now my old self hang on to your early 20’s teen years and kid years those are the golden moments of life but man the singer really was smart I see deep meaning to the song I might be wrong but I think he’s talking bout addicts but man what a time
This song is just squats, full of amazements that I can do with squats, and I do, but it's hard, I like it, it's just fascination when I do. Just fascination when my body works.
I first saw "The Cabs" in Sheffield in 79, then went to one of the Broomhill cellar parties. Some guy I met asked me what did I think of the Cabs, and I said I thought they were crap. I was just a bit upset that they only played for 40 mins, and I was short-changed. They were brilliant. Best songs are Nag Nag Nag, and Head Kick (Do the Mussolini).
This sounds SO cool. Never even heard of Cabaret Voltaire until now either. Sounds very similar to Depeche Mode and Human League's older, more dark and mysterious stuff 😊 Even with all the psychology and brain studies that have been done over the years, there's still not much known about what sparks genuine fascination. Awesome aye 🤔😄
Fascinating. The 80's still gets under people's skin like the stinger of a wasp. It was glorious to be free of social justice, self censureship, unicorn rainbow politiks, positive images, fitbits, antioxidents, 'team' think, inclusive diversity and all the rest of the 21st century emotive/fem muckiness.
