Conservative Lee Anderson invited politicians in the House of Commons to visit his Ashfield constituency, touting his answer to poverty in the UK: budgeting and cooking classes.
'We can make a meal for about 30 pence a day' said Anderson, who claimed he volunteered regularly in his local food bank and argued that 'generation after generation' did not know how to cook cheap meals and budget

Also schizofrenic name
always has been, nothing has changed in 40 years. just people now abuse the welfare and tax payers
We have a tendency in the UK to focus on the little stories that detract from the big issue. The issue is not a Tory MP's opinion on food banks, it should be what are we going to do to help the burden on people across the UK. We have a government that allows big business to rake in huge profits from 'essential' price rises. When recession undoubtedly hits in the next few months, they will blame the British people for not spending enough to make the economy thrive. Reality is, there wouldn't be a danger of recession if big business shared the burden. However, the burden to big business is they make a tiny bit less profit. But yeah...let's focus on what an irrelevant MP said in the house of commons about food banks.
We all pay extra tax when prices rise unless we stop buying. The fuel suppliers pay extra tax if prices they sell at rise if their production costs are less than the increase so regardless of a windfall tax there is substantial additional revenue for the treasury. The Treasury has had double windfalls over the pandemic because there has been a reduction in pensions and care from the excess death rate and an increase in death duties. The Government act like they haven’t got anyone who can do basic economics because they only want to do things for themselves and their friends, which includes a lot of big housing developers who are big Conservative Party supporters.
and the big story is?
I think the irrelevant focus and weaselwording is the only thing stopping people from realising how bad a country this is. Before the bailouts, there would have been riots if the chancellor honestly went around asking for people's future income. There would be riots if we were told our military interventions would produce worse conditions in the targeted countries and millions of refugees we would have to care for. Our politicians, media and bankers have us by the balls and they know it. Hence, the abundance of landlords chilling in their little homesteads avoiding doing any work, not unlike drug lords.
While I agree that cooking skills are going downhill and it is significantly cheeper to make food from scratch I would really like to see this guy try to live on a universal credit budget I bet he would run out of money on day one of the month.
I think all politicians should have to try to live on the lowest possible income for a month for that matter.
If they're going to be making decisions on behalf of the poorest in society they should at least have to live a month in their shoes.
Cooking from scratch is sometimes cheaper. If you want high quality food, it gets expensive still
@@ImChrisDeDecker but the half an hour to an hour in the oven makes it more expensive than 5 mins in the microwave or a McDonalds. But Tories don’t count fuel costs when they talk about cooking. And why should people in the 5th richest country on earth have to struggle to eat and live off a few pounds per day, instead of giving people better opportunities.
How many of these benefits people own 2 cars 2 mobile phones have 88 inch plasma and sky or Netflix and still moan
@@harryboy3305 About 100 in all the UK.
@@harryboy3305 not many but owning a phone (which you could have where you have a £10 a month contract) is a requirement for benefits like jobseekers and depending on where they live they would need a car to get to places (or if they have children or a disability that means they can't walk far, those aren't alway visible), neither of those things are unnecessary items. Not to mention that poor people do sometimes buy things before they are poor, so you'd first need to know when they got it (also from where clause they could he second hand or gifts or something from people who want to help).
Also do you know how much people get on benefits? It's really not much, the vast majority of people on benefits get a ridiculous amount to live on, only a small number are like myself who actually get enough from benefits to have a disposable income or savings (I I get it because I'm disabled and basically unemployable). Personally though I don't think that people should be punished for being unemployed or not being paid enough at their job and should get enough money to feed themselves and family and at the same time pay the bills (which would include mobile phones, cause it's the 21st century and we don't use landlines or fax machines anymore and maybe they also need to use a car).

explain to us the food banks purpase, now as a founder of a food bank i want to see your reply?
These Tories are so out of touch its frightening.
Andrew Cottle. They're not only out of touch... They just don't care.
He is obviously right though. People are way too reliant on pricey fast food and will even pay extra to have it brought to their door.
That's what I see all the time in my area of the deprived north east. Most of the Guardian readers are middle class and have no idea what's happening outside their bubble.
No he's not right... 30p barely pays for the cooking.
It £1.50 for a loaf of bread
@@joannelewis8038 Might be worth shopping around! Out of interest, I did and found exactly the same products, priced differently all over. Shout out to Poundland - Kingsmill 50/50 @ £1.00 was the best value.
This is what happens when you watch too much Jamie Oliver on the Food Channel
Tory’s are killing there selfs
Victorian ideology
I'm trying to imagine what a 30p meal would look like. Maybe a carrot and a stick of celery?
nah bro at best a freddo.
Not a Big Mac or any other deliveroo meal
Here he is - “Tin Eared Lee”
That headline is a LIE - that is NOT what he said
The price of staple groceries in the UK such as margarine, tomatoes and apples have rocketed by as much as 45 per cent in the past year, official figures show in January 2022. Gosh knows how much increase more Jan to now!!! let alone being able to afford the elec/gas bill of even turning your oven on!
Well, that's what you get for wanting lockdowns, isn't it? Hyperinflation.
you people really need stop believing the trash on the media, i see only proces coming down. try liv ing in the usa and philippines, then complain. my local tesco is giving 80% certain times of night. so you buy the cheap stuff very simple and save electric by buying a air fryer and switiching your tv off, very simple, what do you think we did for food in the 1970.s? no computers, no phones, no heating, no water, no power, umm but it is now 2022 and we are still here. oh yes people where social and actually helped each other., tv channels should be forced to closed down during the night and businesses. just like the old days. oh and people walked
all three items you listed are luxury items and not needed. tomatoes 48pence, marge or spread 69 p, apple go get wild and pick wild fruit, just like we use too. how do you people think we lived when there was no food in the 1970.s , no welfare system. no food banks, yet you people can afford to have kids , mobile fones and internet. ask your local facebook group how many people eat, eggs, milk , cheese, spread and tomatoes. oh wait you can not, cause if you can not afford food, you can not afford the device to get on the web, so you will not be replying to me, cause your have sold your 20 quid fone to get food
What a great idea, put hurdles in the way of the starving.
Money for war but not the poor
no one in the uk is starving , only abusing the welfare system, if they where starving they would have jobs and stop having kids they can not afford.
Going down foodbank with their 200 pound smartphone
Most are on pay as you go
This is absolutely disgraceful : register as poor and be patronised with cooking lessons. Wasn't this ludicrous suggestion made some years ago elsewhere? Edit: yes, by Sra. Cospedal in Spain, 2015 and Baroness Anne Jenkins in England in 2014. This monster isn't even original.
Oh shut up
When ya can't even buy an apple for less than 60p id love to know what a 30p meal looks like ?
£1.50 for a loaf of bread
i would love to know where you people are shopping cause it is not a hight street supermarket. and those prices can be proven in 3 secs. why do you people waste your time posting nonsense, and i run two food banks, and no one needs food right now, cause supermarkets are giving food away. often walk out my supermarket and their is free food end of registers. and that has been going on 19 years my area.
@@rduggan2011 I have never ever been in a shop where they had free food at the end of the register, your having a laugh arnt you 😂
Morrison's in Derby sell 4 red apples for £ 240 .. that is 60p each !
You might as well shut one of your food banks down if your telling the truth ... what's point of running two banks in the first place if like you say no one needs food in your area ?
What is the point of having a food bank at all as apparently your shops offer free food ?
Sounds like your being a tad greedy 😂😂
Or maybe your just a troll
Whilst he is claiming 200K a year in expenses, he's lecturing the poor on budgeting???? Why did he need an extra 200K on top of his 160K salary? Maybe he couldn't manage on such a paltry amount!!!
1 He isn’t lecturing
2 if he has spent £200k legitimately then he deserves the money back, expenses aren’t wages are they - it’s money back for payments made
3 his salary is around half of what you quoted
4 he is right anyway
It's £1.50 for a loaf of bread
can you legally prove in court he is claiming 200k per year?
how much do you claim a year from hmrc and dwp?
@@rduggan2011 I don't claim anything at all!
Well bring back cooking lessons in schools. And up the minimum wage .
30 pence a day, WOW! This guy thinks it's 1963.

So patronising!
Business idea:Torry great deal :One wing and chips 50 p; the best deal from the sctrachers; You should open the parlament kitchen u eat mostly free there on a British bill.

Yeah we defo voting for him .
well said , thing is maybe some of those who voted for him last time who are now using food banks were not then
@@tonybaronowski9403 really don t go near q food bank then .
Yes, vote for this sleeves rolled up Tory, who is trying to get families cooking and eating better, and wasting less money on take outs. He's doing a lot more for his constituents than the middle class Guardian readers on this thread.
Please sir can I have some more
His biggest cost was on staffing at £165,215.27, followed by £33,144.30 on office costs and £17,650.60 on accommodation. And he spent £67.57 on hospitality.
Mr Anderson, who earns £84,144 a year spent three times his salary on expenses. How many 40p meals has he been eating??
what was your companies wages cost last year and expenses? my staff start at 32000 a year. now ask tesco how many billions there expenses to hmrc was last year in staff costs? being a mp is no different then running any other company. and that means two offices. and rental on four businesses and homes. two offices, two homes, two sets of staff in two parts of the country, wish you people would have a clue before posting trash, try being a manager for a day and seeing business expenses. season train ricket 15000 a year per member of staff. how many staff do you think this guy has? to run two offices? now i remember at start of covid , i was working with mps at 2am maybe 4am in the morning and that was like 20 hour days. and that was just sorting food parcels and local councils and mayors. then sorting the 42 million that got uc support etc. and i did all this free, so people wouid not starve as a founder of a food bank, then came the birth of one billion food parcels. world wide.
The video if him getting called out for pretending to campaign is hilarious.. his voters must be pretty sheeplike
This is why we should not elevate this man. At least a genuine torie hates the workers honestly.
This man ( i am a x miner from down the pit) betrays his origins with deceit.
It is in the Conservatives’ interests to depoliticise poverty, to propagate the idea that hardship is a result of an individual’s bad decisions rather than government policies.
Take note USA....
Tory answer , interest rate increase at the food bank ,
did he pass such course?
He should go and visit a food bank and say that to someone’s face 😊

High volume production makes things cheaper and easier. Cooking isn't exception either. If someone uses its own sort of craftsman stove, the matter gets even worse.
It £1.50 for a loaf of bread
yes it is called a basket air fryer very cheap and easy amd most items less then 20 minutes. and 29 quid right now, i live above a shopping centre, and their is no poverty in uk right now. average trolly per week 200 - 300 quid
If you can't afford heat and food then you can't pay council or main tax.
Get a means form and simply post it.
ah but who can get it
The council tax and other taxes weren't mentioned , it's a shame the Oppostion didn't include it!
