    Good review Isaac. One of my previous jobs was as a firefighter. We were called out on many death calls where people used an unvented propane heater to stay warm. It was a gloomy winter trend and very sad, especially when there were children.

    One option is a 12 volt electric blanket and save some fuel or backup if heater fails. Just a suggestion.

    My rig is a beefed-up Suburban. I don't have room for a built-in heater. I'm going to have to make do with my heating pad and blanket during the night, which I'll run on my power station(s). I'm already used to doing that, since I've lived in a partially-finished garage for over a decade (no furnace, no plumbing--only electric). I usually wake up sweating at some point because the provided heat is that sufficient.

    Thank you, Issac, this answers so many questions I have about winter camping. I am looking for a new rig this year, as I gave my bus to my son. And I am looking for one that will keep me safe in the single elements of Eastern Oregon. (high winds, single digits winters, high desert heat, and dryness of summer)
    I do have a couple of questions on the external latches. First high are they? Will I need a step stool at 5foot5? Can you disengage them with gloves on? Do they take a lot of thumb strength for the carpal tunnel?

    • @isaacturnerit
      @isaacturnerit  5 місяців тому +1

    Issac good straight forward review. Every rig has it pros and cons. Question, let's say it was really snowing or pouring rain, could you slip inside without the top raised and sleep with heat? Just a thought. I know it would be low but then when the weather cleared a bit you could raise it.

    I live in Oregon too, and I'm wondering about the canvas. Does it keep water out in rain or snow? What about mildew? In Oregon there is so much rain that I would think it would be hard to dry it out once you get back home, unless you have a heated garage. Do you just pop it up at home on an overcast day and does that dry it out enough? Let me know.

    • @isaacturnerit

      @@isaacturnerit So you're not drying it out at all after rain or snow? Not popping it up when you get home to air out on a dryer day? I'm curious because I'm thinking of getting one of these.

    2 people in a campsite next to me used the stove all night long for heat. and died. this is not a BS story , they never came out in the morning for breakfast. another member of their grp that slept in the cab not the camper, came out screaming THEY'RE DEAD....OMG... HELP ME MY FAMILY IS DEAD....thankfully i didnt know them . but it was sooo horrible to see the park rangers remove the bodies.

      Bilstein 5100s but biggest thing for camper is air bags

  • @GardenerTobak
    @GardenerTobak 5 місяців тому

    I don't think it's safe to use your stove as a heater. You're definitely right to say, "Vent your space," but I still think it's too dangerous. Carbon monoxide is a tasteless, odorless gas, and it is highly toxic. Also, there are other harmful fumes which can build up from propane, as well. I might do it in a desperate situation just to stay alive, but only for limited periods, and while cracking some bit of ventilation open for sure. Frankly, in a survival situation, I think I'd rely more on the truck heater instead - since at least it doesn't exhaust itself right into the cab - and spend most of my time in there, turning the engine on and off for short periods every few hours, to converse fuel. But hopefully I'll never need to make use of either option.
