  • Millions of Hyundai and Kia vehicles run the risk of sudden engine fires and failures - and drivers say recalls have done little to address the safety issues. I never believed Kia or Hyundai were qualify (or aesthetically pleasing) vehicles anyways. However, since news about vehicle fires has continued to develop, I feel unsafe just being near them. It never ever needed a boost, no sensor errors, no flat tires even,(experienced truck driver), only changed 3 signal light bulbs, 2 marker light bulbs, and regular oil/filter changes, USING ALL TOYOTA recommended fluids, under the hood. Sound system very good. Never ever required new brake pads/shoes, etc. as regenerative braking re-charges the large battery pack behind the rear seat, front of trunk. None of these things were covered by the manufacturer's warranty OR Toyota's ECP (extra warranty) that I paid for. The other thing was the stitching on the front passenger seat started to come apart and that was the only thing they fixed. Hyundai had another recall (beside this one) just few days ago. This is why it is important to do the home work before purchasing any vehicle and to check history or company reputation. Hyundai was well known back in 1980s for manufacturing very sub-standard, unsafe vehicle model called "Excel". That vehicle was a major disaster for the company due to so many issues and unreliability. Then about 10 years ago or so, the company made some improvements with the help of German engineering. This is why their style has strong similarity with many German vehicles. When I visited Japan recently, you will not see even one Hyundai on the road because Japanese people will not buy any Hyundai. Perhaps they know some thing we don't here in the USA. Personally with all these recalls mounting with hyundai and with past poor reputation, I would not buy Hyundai. I know many people buy Hyundai simply because they are quite cheap in price compared to Toyota or similar brand and models. But what everyone should do is to ask these simple questions:
1). Is it really worth buying Hyundai to save few dollars compared to pay just bit more to purchase other brands with hardly any major recalls?
2). What will be the reliability of such vehicle in the long run?
3). How well the re-sale value will it hold and depreciation in value?
unfortunately the reality is most people are not willing to pay just few more dollars to buy better overall vehicle so when they buy Hyundai, they feel they are saving by not paying more. But what is wrong with this approach is not able to buy quality product and settle for sub standard vehicle which will end up with disasters such as outlined here. Then you can end up losing entire car.

have a 2019 Kia Sorento. I bought it September of 2018. I live in NYC so sometimes we have pretty cold weather. In January of 2019 I had a lot of trouble to start my vehicle. I brought it in to my local service center to see if they can figure out why. They told me that they weren't able to find out the problem. Fast forward to November 2019 really cold night into the morning, my car wouldn't start again. It was towed to the local service center. They had it in the shop a total of 2 and 1/2 days and they still weren't able to find the problem. This is a problem that Kia needs to step in and remedy. If this continues I may have to sell this vehicle and buy a competitor's vehicle instead as well as tell everyone I know not to purchase this car or any other from this company.

From Quebec, I own a 2020 Elantra, luckily it was covered under warranty, but there still is no recall.
My engine began knocking at 4000km, I let the dealership know and they ordered parts for the vehicle, this was in November 2020.
Fast-forward to January 2021, and they still hadn't received the parts (backordered) and were reticent to loan me a car. My Elantra was doing 16L/100km, was heavily knocking to the point where it sounded like a large commercial diesel and was regularly losing power on acceleration. I had to wait for an engine light to come on before I could take it to the dealership and they finally left me with a loaner car.
I asked them about it, and they confirmed my suspicion. Debris in the engine, leading to a bad lubrification of the rod bearings causing engine failure. This is EXACTLY the same issue plaguing the early 2010 Elantras, still present 10 years later.

I had a sonata that experienced engine failure in the middle of the highway. So scary! This was AFTER the recall work was already done on my vehicle. They covered the replacement but I still played $1400 in a new ecm and another $300 for a starter in the next 3 weeks. Not covered by Hyundai. It ran perfectly fine prior, never even had a warning light. Traded it in because other sensors started going, which happens when you start replacing other sensors. Still waiting to get a check from the class action lawsuit in the us. Thanks for sharing this information.

After permanently shuddery brakes that they could never fix, a transmission replaced, a/c that smelled permanently of rotten eggs, aluminum strips in roof that blew off every time I went thru a car wash I discoverd when the engine fan FELL OFF, that the fantastic warranty applied to "internally lubricated parts only", or so the service manager told me. So what is new for Range Rover then? BIL had his own parking spot in the service bay, and as I dropped it off there so often the security and most of the sales people thought I actually worked at the dealership. I used to skip the check in line, drive through the side entrance, past the security then take it to it's parking, and leave the key with the service office, along with the fault list for the week. In the months they had it that recall was out for "immediate attention", and they had the new pipes, but they were never installed.
Guess how we found that out, I was driving the kids, and the hose popped, so I had to do a roadside fix to get it going, using a multitool, and cooldrink to fill the water up. Yup popped head gasket on a rear cylinder, but it was "within specs", so it had rough idle when cold forever after. The low water sensor is disabled on start, as it would otherwise falsely trigger with normal coolant flow.
