    The amount of diversity for such a relatively small country is astonishing. You can visit France for almost any reason or any activity. Not to even mention the amount of History, landmarks, culture, etc (which are not really about geography), France has some of the most beautiful mountains in the World, the Atlantic coast is mighty, beautiful, wild, while the Mediterranean coast is idyllic, glamourous, etc. The countryside is amazing too. We almost have every type of landscape. Cliffs, oceans, paradisiacal islands, the Alps, you name it. Believe it or not, we even have a small Colorado-type of Canyon in the South. Economically speaking, it's the only country having direct access over the Channel to the North, to the Atlantic Ocean to the West & to the Mediterranean Sea to the South. VIVE LA FRANCE! 🇫🇷⚜️

      There were a lot of reasons why France had such rotten luck between 1850 and 1950. The French have actually won most of their wars previously, but the changing geopolitical landscape after the 1848 revolutions put the French on the back foot on the continent. First, they were mostly concerned with their overseas Empire, which naturally made them butt against their traditional enemy, the British. Also, during the nineteenth century, the Germans were impelled to industrialize more quickly, and were more populous than the French, giving the Germans the upper hand initially. Poor military doctrines developed in the early twentieth century caused the utter waste of millions of young Frenchmen in the first half of the First World War, leading to a demographic crisis which put them in a very bad position at the start of World War II. In a way, losing the Empire and integrating with the rest of Europe has put the otherwise geographically blessed French in a far better position than they'd been since the Napoleonic Era.

    About the ww2 references: France's geography is ALMOST perfect (hi, Germany). Now let's talk about demography.
    1914 : France: 41,630,000 , Germany: 65,860,000
    1940 : France: 40,690,000 , Germany: 69,838,000
    France used to be *by far* the most populated country of Europe, and that's one of the reasons why France could resist (and invade) most of Europe during the French revolution wars and the Napoleonic wars. But this situation ended ~after the Napoleonic era and France underwent a lasting demographic winter, while other European countries' population increased a lot. Despite massive immigration starting in the 1870s, it didn't change much (there were even years at the end of 19th c. when France actually lost population (more deaths than births) IIRC).

  • @AudieHolland
    @AudieHolland 3 роки тому +5

    The situation at 05:35 was even worse. Following the German invasion of The Netherlands and Belgium, the Allied forces moved north, into both attacked countries, which was just what the Germans were hoping for.
    With most of their forces north of the French border, following the German breakthrough (or better 'sail through' because there were almost no forces stationed in the Ardennes Region) most of the Allied forces' supply lines were cut off and they were being surrounded from the north and south.
    Therefore the only direction they could fall back to, was the Belgian coast, ending up in Dunkirk.

      @@MerkhVision That area is the beginning of the most densely populated area of Europe, and consequently one its most productive and powerful. No chance the people of that area would let such military presence continue, just look at Okinawa today. Compared to the Great Wall of China, which was built north of Beijing, itself around surrounded by useless unproductive mountains on the west, north and east, and extending the wall further west towards the steppes where only the tiny number of horse nomads go.
      Belgium was additionally supposed to let the Maginot expand into their border with Germany, not along their border with France. They chose to be like the Dutch who in WWI remained neutral. Thinking that Germany would similarly respect that sort of neutrality again, and also choosing the UK as their preferred ally over France, they felt protected enough. Unfortunately, the British lacked army, and despite the splendid navy and air force, they couldn't even begin retaking continental Europe until the Americans arrived.

The Maginot Line (which I'm assuming you're thinking of) even incorporated some of these, as they were still so big, useful and imposing over the local geography. They just happened to be fortifying it against every single super power that wasn't Britain or Spain, so it's honestly crazy the WW2 blitz hadn't happened more than once in a thousand years xD

    I always thought the US was extremely well-placed. Possibly the most strategically placed country on Earth. The US doesn't share borders with neighboring threats (Canada hardly invests in its military because the US is so powerful, and Mexico, no offense, is too poor to be powerful). With those 2 countries not being threats, and more so allies, it takes the crossing of the entire Pacific or Atlantic oceans to get to the US. This puts most militaries at a distinct disadvantage, if they ever wanted to go on the offensive. The US also has the most powerful Navy in the whole world, and can defend its coasts very easily.

    As somebody who laughs at the satire against the French, if you ask me for a serious appraisal of France’s military history, I’d have to say the US still has to reach their level.
    Now a lot of Americans will be upset by that, but let’s put it in context.
    France, or the region known as France, gave the Romans a run for their money, only being beaten by a man by the name of Julius Caesar and some lucky turns. Jump a few centuries and they were among the major players in the Crusades. Constant war between major powers like England, Spain and Germany show they were no pushover. Napoleon is among the top ten greatest generals in history and is studied at most military academies. I’m not sure how many American generals would hold that honour, except Patton, that guy was a genius. Yes they did crumble fairly quickly in WW2, but as I’ve said in other posts, they were outmanoeuvred not defeated. The French had built a line of forts expecting a frontal assault and Germany used the black forest to drive their tanks right past them. This was a massive gamble on Germany’s part. Just a bridge down or a tank overturning would’ve turned the whole exercise into a disaster. In fact, due to the courage of French soldiers, outmatched and outgunned, the British had a successful evacuation at Dunkirk. Then for the next few years, the French Resistance made life hell for the Germans. It was the French who contributed valuable intelligence and support on D-Day and certainly were as much a part of that amazing offensive as the British, Commonwealth and American forces were.
    With more than 2000 years of being notorious warriors, the French have a great military history, and nothing to be ashamed of.

If the US were to be invaded , yea its nearly impossible but imagine such a situation happened, would you bother to go fight on the other side of the world against another ennemy putting most of their war effort into taking whats left of you or would you rather do everything you can to take back your country

    • @martindouge1947
      @martindouge1947 5 років тому +8

      @@hukumbra "I didn't see Europeans fighting in the pacific"
      I didn't see Europeans fighting in the ocean that is opposite of their continent, where most of their armies were mobilized out of their colonies to fight the threat on their home continent that has been their world for centuries prior to that little part of the world called Indochina or East Indies that they only conquered a few centuries ago at most.
      And the matter of illegal immigrants is an ethical and political rut. It has nothing to do with the military power of the nations. European nations consider that they are beyond the notions of savagery that would come if they simply gunned down immigrants, which they completely could. However, responsibilities from colonialism and the economical ties between Europe and Africa leads to many people in Africa thinking Europe is a better place for them, and it also leads Europe to take this problem on a more tamed down approach to avoid looking like the bad guys again.
      But of course I wouldn't expect this kind of reasoning from a country that never had the burden of cleaning its colonial mess, where people think the best solution to immigration is a wall, where thinking that passing aggression as "spreading ideologies" or "manifesting destiny" is acceptable, and whose entire existence depends solely from the existence of France to oppose the British Empire that oppressed it.

What they were wrong was to assume that this would be enough deterrence a against full scale German thrust.
