As with everything concerning the Saint, I have a slightly different interpretation:
In my opinion, Pebbles is still stuck in the thought patterns programmed into him, mimicking the thoughts of the Ancients, seeing the Cycle as a prison, something you need to escape. And of course, judging from that frame of reference, the Saint's fate must seem terrible.
Yet at times in Saint's campaign, that standpoint is called into question. The echo in Undergrowth says
I did not have the will to depart, nor the desire.
Why did they always search for an escape as if imprisoned?
What offering from the void could usurp the gift of life already given?
This moment, right here! It is where we are meant to be.
And the whole Undergrowth area cements this theme for me. Even as the surface above is ravaged by storms, below, life finds a way. The same thing is true for Pebbles' can, now a sheltering animals from the storm. Life goes on, and to be alive is a beautiful thing. And from this view, Saints fate is a lot more pleasant. It crossed the point of no return, it was able to unmake itself like those that came before and that would come after. And yet it chose not to do so. Instead it became a part of the Cycle itself, able to witness the end of the old world, and the beginning of the new when winter ends and life emerges again from the depths.

@@maxireigl1919 you have to remember that the Echo is saying that from a place of regret, Saint isn't alive so to speak, he's doomed to repeat the same cycle over and over again, the gift of life that the Echo is speaking about is the cycle he's also referring to, that which every other being in the wild world is subjected to without the need of ascension or void fluid

The saint is an anomaly, but we can only speculate about it's exact nature. All we know for sure is that he passed the point of no return, he ascended. And them he came back, something that should not be possible.

I feel that the ancients that became echoes only did so because they tried to return. It seems like they all share the same feeling of regret for not leaving the world behind, but a fear of regretting that decision beyond the point of no return. My theory is that the "point of no return" isn't ascension, but rather returning from ascension.

As the saint returns to the point where he began and rubicon is just an amalgam of thoughts, I guess he just meditated the whole way, he doesnt need to ascend as he is already gone, so he can take others with him mentally.

I think showing them separately first, then together would be better, because it seems that FP and Moon come to a better understanding of the Saint when they are together to talk, which is why instead of lamenting or being horrified by Saint's existence they send you off in good spirits.
FP: We were trying to understand what lies beyond a point of no return, while having yet to pass it.
Moon: Only those who have seen the other side can know the answers, but by definition they can never venture back to deliver the knowledge the have gained.
FP: Perhaps that is why you need to wake up, Little Visitor.
When they are together to share their observations, experiences and idea; they come to a greater understanding.

I like to imagine Moon was the last iterator that needed to be asecended, and in canon Saint spent a long period of time with her as Rivulet did. She seems content so it feels odd running to end her cycle so soon after Pebbles.

It's my understanding that Saint is trapped in a never-ending time loop and returns to existence every time it tries to ascend. Clearly it has done this before, judging by the beginning and ending cutscenes, and I believe that its attempt to ascend the Void Worm was not a mistake, but a deliberate choice. Did the Saint reject ascension? Are the time loops a punishment by the void, or a choice by the Saint? It turns into a dream (shining golden slugcat ghost) briefly near the end of the ending cutscene, and we see that dream in many other campaigns, including the Monk's and the Survivor's, and it's been stated that echoes exist out of time.
Is its goal to guide others to ascension? Did the void fail to turn the Saint into an echo because it had no attachments? Is the true answer never to ascend at all, but rather to guide others to ascension? I wonder what would happen if you ascended every living creature in the game. Probably nothing, but it's my guess that ascending a creature removes it from the cycles entirely. If every creature within range of the Saint (that is, all of the available map) ascends, could it lead to a super-secret ending? Is ascension even the right choice at all?
I really wish you could continue after the ending and just keep looping. Maybe some things would begin to destabilize. Maybe some things would change. More likely, though, it's just an infinite loop with no beginning or end; an ouroboros with no hope of escape. But as the Undergrowth echo said, "this moment, right here, this is where we are meant to be." Is this a blessing or a curse?

i hear many theories about saint bringing himself back to ascend others in a repeating cycle, i heard one as well about how it’s desire is to ascend all the void worms in an effort to erase the idea of the “ascension firewall” too, but the one that makes most sense to me is saint being sent back to the start of their campaign as punishment for trying to bring back the answer to the iterators’ Great Problem - since it breaks how the way things are supposed to be in the nsture of rainworld, like saint having literal godlike powers who can (supposedly) ascend beings straight from the surface and saint successfully coming back from a point of no return, which just isn’t meant to be in the eyes of the void worms.
i think it also ties in with how the rubicon appears as broken little fragments of the places you’ve visited as saint as well, like how dreams can sometimes be this amalgamation of places you’ve been to. the whole saint being in a dream ties up this theory for me.

Don't stress over theories, and treat the game for the, rather loose, allegory of Buddhism that it is. The Saint is even doing Yoga when resting - some kind of prayer mudra (Anjali?) and a Prana mudra (supposed to re-energize you). The point is that, by definition, one who capable of severing their attachment to the cycles of suffering that is existence, cannot return to it and tell others how to do it. But there is one so filled with compassion, who absolutely refuses violence to even defend themselves, or to survive at the expense of another, that they can make that choice. To return. To help others. A true saint.
The iterators are no longer the authority here, as the Awakened One (Buddha) is perfectly self-enlightened, and is the one that teaches gods and humans. Five Pebbles is just a bit slow on the uptake.

But some of the locations you see in Rubicon were never visited by Saint, like The Leg, which is totally destroyed in his timeline. He's just walking through Rubicon's own recollection of the world. The stone temple-looking structures that are unique to the area are probably just an ancient city that predate the slugcats and everyone else in this story.
My take: Saint's intro cutscene where he dreams of the void worms were a vision sent to him by the worms, instructing him to ascend. Him ascending the void worms is exactly what they want: He's their only ticket out of the cycle since they're immune to the void fluid.

So this is a theory of mine but i think what Saints campaign tells us is that the events of Rainworld are happening not only in the short circles the world faces by itself but that there is also a larger circle. One of the echos wonders how many civilizasions have passed and i think this is the exact point. The events of rainworld have happened maybe hundreds if not thousands of time on repeat acting out the same way every time over and over. Saints enlightenmend however seams to be the first time people are able to see whats on the other side of the void, the void that removes you from the circle yes but only from the normal circle not the overarching one. Saint wakes up in his spawn at the end of his campagin and you get the achviment "Everything comes full circle" because Saint is the only character that know off the overarching circle and wants to put an end to it, having to work himself through the smaller circles to get and break the larger one eventually. That is what makes him the saint, the enlightened one, to realize to bigger picture and bruteforce a solution even if it takes eons, this is why he also become an echo at the end of his cycle as there is still work to be done and a new cicle to pass through what dont allow him to ascent regularly.

Due to how Rain World seems to work, that being that a death sends you to a reality where you never died (I assume this due to the fact that the Artificer lost her pups even though everything should just come back, so from the pups perspective they may still be alive, but to the Artificer they died to scavs) it may just work that way from the Saints perspective, but to anything else in the old reality the Saint just became another echo.
