Try testing it on a plant in a pot. It contains both organic AND inorganic materials so it tests both. As a bonus, when it all goes bad, nobody is hurt.
To be fair there's like a million movies where they do just that, everything goes fine, they decide to test it on people next, and then there's a dramatic lingering shot of something going horribly wrong with the plant after a delay and no-one notices

I just love they hit upon the fact that the noise of the transporters, if left on continually, would be such an irritation and earworm. The addition of the swirls rotating around Boilmer make it even funnier. I bet the animators has so much fun with 'the dog' too.

It kinda changed. In the ye olde star trek it was dissassembly, sending the bits to your destination, and rebuilding you from the bits at the destination. Later it was canonically replaced by warping which was supposedly less accident prone. At least that's what i can vaguely remember from a dialogue in one of the movies.
