I would love to go back to your previous videos and treat it as an online course. :) i have my notebook setup specifically for ur tutorials. :) im from the philippines and i find ur videos truly helpful
Yes, the thin upstroke is the hardest part of brush lettering and transitioning from thick to thin and vice versa takes a lot of practice. Don't worry... you will improve! Your thin lines don't need to be hairlines...just a little smaller than your thick lines. Have fun!
Yeah man ... I mean thick are super easy to do when compared to thin strokes ... I am kinda obsessed with calligraphy,so trying really hard to learn it ... Please give me likes
I am a lefty and have been sooo confused on how to brush letter and if I should watch righty vid or not but your vids really helped me even though you are not a lefty. I love your style tooo :)
That is the hardest part of using a brush pen....releasing and applying pressure. It takes a lot of practice to perfect those transitions. My worksheets will help. :)
Sorry to be so offtopic but does any of you know of a trick to log back into an instagram account?? I was stupid forgot the login password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me
@Gianni Colson thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
HI Bonnie! Oh, great to hear! If you're on my website, please sign up for KELLY LETTERS my newsletter because you will get monthly tips, trends and freebies! The Newsletter subscription box is on the right side of my web page. www.kellycreates.ca
I knew she was Canadian the moment she said "Sorry" lol I always thought it was super cute how Canadians say sorry ("sore-ey"), vs how I hear it here in Illinois ( "sah-ree") 😂😂
I have the exact same lime green Tombow no133. It does look so very different while you film it. It looks totally different on my paper. I have the same thing happening with other Tombows too. I think I am having trouble with all the letters again. I thought I was improving but it seems I was wrong after all...That shoulder tendinitis might be responsible or I am totally not talented in writing...Thank you for the alphabet practicing tutorial 👏🏻👍🏻🖌📝
Jovia the thin upstrokes take a very long time to master. Also, the brush tip pen needs to be stiff and fairly new if you're a beginner. In general, just try to make the upstrokes thinner than the downstrokes so there is a difference between the two. Over time your lines will get thinner. Relax and hold your pen loosely.
Hi Carolyn, thank you for your kind words! No, these pens are water based and do not bleed through. I know lots of people who use them for Bible journaling. You can also watercolour with them. If you use clear gesso in your Bible, you can use the markers with water on top! My friend Lynn Shokoples uses watercolour all the time. Check out her Bible journaling UA-cam videos. Just search Lynn Shokoples here.
I’m glad you still say “zed” in Canada. Here in Australia we are losing our individuality and many are adopting the American lingo. I however, still say zed.
Beautiful...what brushes are you using exactly? I like the black and gray ones that you were using when you drew the a b c in each of those colors...does the Tombow marker have a specific number size on those that you used? Thank you!
I've always wanted to try hand-lettering to see if I like it, but one class here in Melbourne is SO expensive. So, thank you so much for sharing with us and giving such an affordable alternative!! One question, could I also use Copic markers instead of these Tombow ones?
Helen, the colours of the Tombow pen seem to last forever and they don't dry out. At least none of mine have and I use them a lot! But the tips do break down adn soften and fray, like all brush pens do.
I cannot get my thick strokes for oval to be as thick as yours. All of mine are medium and I'm not sure if it's how I'm holding the pen or something else. Please help
Depends which brush pen you are using. Basically you want to see a difference between thick and thin lines. The thick lines don't have to be super thick. You can email me a photo if you would like more help. KellyCreates101@gmail.com thanks!
Hi, Copic brush markers are alcohol based so I don't recommend using them for brush lettering, but yes you can use them. They bleed through paper and aren't beginner friendly
LOL. Yes, the upstrokes will take a very long time to master. They will be steadier as you grow more confident and your muscle memory builds. Also, you don't have to make the upstrokes so thin. Beginners can make them a little thicker which will help you be steadier. Also, try locking your wrist more and using whole arm movement. Hope this helps!
kellycreates thank you so much. I'll be trying for a new brand. Your videos are really really helpful to me🤗 b'coz I'm an absolute beginner for calligraphy.
Tombows are nice pens but they are a little soft so some beginners might have trouble using them. My Kelly Creates Dream Pens are quite stiff so you might find them easier to use. Or try another brand, like Kuretake brush pens.
I've been practicing with tombow dual brush pens for a few months and even after learning how to hold the pen, which paper to use and pressure, I still struggle with fray lines from the pens. Do you still struggle with that at all every now and then? It's so discouraging:(
Sadly every pen frays, especially with overuse. I don't find my pens fray too much, though, and maybe it's because I have a very light touch. My grip is loose and I am quite gentle. Also, I sometimes find certain colours fray more quickly than others. I don't recommend black in any brand. Strange, but they seem to soften quickly.
A tip for you who like to study different languages -- practice your vocabulary words by lettering them. You'll be learning two things in the same amount of time as one.
Does anyone have advice for a left handed writer? I have trouble with re-creating some strokes because of where the marker is positioned in my left hand, would starting at a different part of the letter help or? Also do you rest your hand on the paper or lift it up slightly so the marker glides better?
Hi Crystal...I teach lots of lefties in my workshops. You have to adjust the push pull of the pen on the paper and hold it coming from the 'side' preferably. Here is a helpful blog post on my website written by a left handed lettering artistwww.kellycreates.ca/2017/07/04/lettering-for-left-handed-artists/
Hi! No there are worksheet sets in my website Shop and also free worksheets in my monthly newsletters. You can email me if you can't find them kellycreates101@gmail.com
I'm using tombow worksheets just a beginner. It would be better if your letters had arrows in your worksheets as its confusing from where to start writing a particular letter
Annie, all brush tips fray from heavy use and practice unfortunately. But the 2 most important ways to prevent fraying is pen angle and smooth paper. By putting pressure on the tip at the correct angle, your brush tip will last longer. Also, practice as much with a pencil as with the brush pen to help learn muscle memory. Hope this helps!
I started handlettering with watercolor brush pens, the tip on those is amazing, an actual brush and I already mastered them, so I got a Tombow ABT black pen and can’t really get the hang of it, I’m starting to hate it haha i m think the tip is not flexible enough for me
The brush pens with a solid tip are totally different from the watercolor brush pens. You will get it...but it takes time. Really push down hard on the downstrokes for thick lines. The tricky part is keeping light pressure on the upstrokes. Actually usually the watercolor brush pens with bristle brushes are harder for most people so if you can use them, then you're very skillful already!
I would love to start this but I'm wondering if you could tell me a paper I could use instead of Rhodia, as I'm scared to order anything until we know more about the mail strike. Any other paper I can print the practice sheets on till I can order?
Hi Nicole, I often practice with copy paper from Staples called HP Premium Laserjet 32 lbs. It is really smooth and inexpensive for practising. I have a link on my website when you click on the tab LEARN BRUSH LETTERING and you will see this paper plus recommended supplies. Thanks for getting in touch!
My upstrokes are thin at the beginning of a letter, but I can't seem to keep them thin at the end of letters. Like the start of my letter L will be fine, but the bit after the thick part is way to thick.
Any left-handed guys here? I am practising handlettering and I think it's easier when you are right-handed... My hand always wants to do the upstrokes(?) thick and the downstrokes(?) thin...

So did I but all you gotta do is practice - you will get better at controlling the strokes
I had that difficulty but I improved
Every one can do it....
I love your style!! would love to see a video of you writing uppercase alphabet:)

I bought your brush lettering book at walmart recently. I thought that was pretty awesome!!
I'm so happy Wal Mart has some workbooks now.
How do you get such perfect upstrokes? Mine are to thick and the transitions are terrible, I have no idea how to fix it
That is the hardest part of using a brush pen....releasing and applying pressure. It takes a lot of practice to perfect those transitions. My worksheets will help. :)

Thank you Liliana! I love your name....it would be beautiful with brush lettering!
So helpful I can’t wait to go home and try
Awesome! thanks!
Hi i am impressed with your are and video. This is my hobby and now i have started making video like this. Keep motivating me
Thank you, I will
You Tombow brush pen is so good. Mine one the ends already started to fray after a few usage. :(
Some pens fray quickly if we are holding them wrong or using rough paper. Also the black pens seem to fray more quickly.
kellycreates question can I use these pens in my sketchbook I’m getting some brush pens soon I wanna know how to use them :)
I'm Brazilian and I love to watch your videos. I was a international student in Canada so I also say Z like you 😂
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed your time in Canada!
Just found you and ordered what i need to get started.
Wonderful! You will love the brush lettering sheets Charlotte!

Take care with your shoulder that it doesn't become fatigued. Maybe don't practice that long.
This was SO helpful.
Thank you for your feedback! :)
Thanks so so much

Parabéns, adorei suas canetas. Sou Brasileira, você tem representante no Brasil?
Wao nice dear....😍
Hello!:)I love all of your vids!😊😊😊
Hi! thanks so much!
im using tombow brush pens as well but my thin lines cant seem to be as thin as yours or am i using too much strength?
Jovia the thin upstrokes take a very long time to master. Also, the brush tip pen needs to be stiff and fairly new if you're a beginner. In general, just try to make the upstrokes thinner than the downstrokes so there is a difference between the two. Over time your lines will get thinner. Relax and hold your pen loosely.
This is exactly my problem. My upstrokes are not thin. But your answer gave me hope! 😄
Wow you are amazing!!! Love it. Thanks for sharing. : 3
It helped a lot
Thanks for letting me know.
Thank you!!
wow this is beuatiful

how can you make such wonderful letters? 💕
lots of practice :)
Your brush letters are perfect. I'm Canadian and say zee I wonder if it varies per province? I'm in Ontario.
I think lots of Canadians now say "ZEE" ha ha
Thankyou!🍫
You’re welcome 😊
Your hand lettering is beautiful & thank you for the utube tutorial. Do these pens bleed or shadow? Can they be used for Bible journaling?
Hi Carolyn, thank you for your kind words! No, these pens are water based and do not bleed through. I know lots of people who use them for Bible journaling. You can also watercolour with them. Hi! Yes you can use Copic, but Copics are not my favourite to practice with because they bleed through paper. But give them a try.
How long will each Tombow pen last? Is it easy to dry out?
Helen, the colours of the Tombow pen seem to last forever and they don't dry out. At least none of mine have and I use them a lot! But the tips do break down adn soften and fray, like all brush pens do.

how much degrees i must put the pencil? 30°? or more??
I just want to ask if that calligrahy pen is refillable????
No, this one isn't refillable. You could use a waterbrush with ink as a refillable option. Brush pens like this are not refillable.
Love your channel and IG page! I'm having a hard time with the thin up strokes. Any advice? my up strokes look like I'm having a seizure!
LOL. Yes, the upstrokes will take a very long time to master. They will be steadier as you grow more confident and your muscle memory builds. Also, you don't have to make the upstrokes so thin. Is this ok with watercolor paper 250gsm? My brush marker (a Korean brand) is leaving marks on backside of the paper.😫
That is a lightweight paper, so it depends on the brand of brush marker and the ink inside. You would have to test it first.
kellycreates thank you so much. I'll be trying for a new brand. Your videos are really really helpful to me🤗 b'coz I'm an absolute beginner for calligraphy.
I just bought tombow's calligraphy pen and I am trying to make the letters with those pen but I don't know why I can have a control over these

HI Glennis....all my worksheets have directional arrows so you know where to start and stop with your pen.
how would you prevent fraying?

Only smooth paper for brush pens (not regular printer paper or notebook paper)

Is there any chance that a left handed person can achieve this same form of lettering?
HI Sue, Yes, there are many talented lefties out there doing brush lettering and calligraphy!
Hi! While writing thin strokes it breakes down I don't get it fluently !!
Maybe use more pressure so the line isn't so thin
Unfortunately it's not free to download. :/
There are lots of free worksheets to download. Here is a link www.kellycreates.ca/shop/
How come my upstrokes are still thick? Huhu
My hand hurts a lot when I try to hold the pen so. 😕
Don't practice for long periods of time. Your hand will adjust
