    Thank you JT for having Gareth on. Great to hear from someone - like yourself who fought hard for your rights , only for the TQ cult to hijack it.
    I am a heterosexual married man, but have had good colleagues & friends who are gay. Everyone should be treated with dignity, but equally when it goes too far the other way it has to be called out.
    Thank you JT & Gareth 👍

      In my opinion, the ‘TQ’ haven’t hijacked anything, they’ve always been there, it’s just now is the time when people are becoming more aware of them. I lived in Soho for many years, and the “gay scene” was a mix of so many people, all of whom were welcomed

    Great interview. I would like to back up something Gareth mentioned. Back in the day (80s/90s) I delivered our training on our local Gay Switchboard and always invited along the local TV/TS Group to talk about transvestism and transexualism, because we would occasionally receive calls from straight transvestites as there was no self-organised TV/TS Switchboard, they only had a monthly dressed meeting. In a decade, we never received an invitation to speak to them as they very clearly stated that their members did NOT want to be associated with gay men. I used to join these guys at the social after the monthly meeting, whete some brought along their wives or girlfriends. It was in a small gay bar, and those socials were great fun, though I can tell you, none of those guys were 'liberal', they were an extremely conservative group of men, but they could drink...

    Many thanks JT and Gareth. I found this discussion informative and educational . As a somewhat clueless straight old guy this was a welcome learning experience. It certainly hits home JT's frustration of what seems to be going on at the moment.
    I recently commented that "diversity"
    has become politicised and weaponised. Gareth explained it so much better than I ever could. I hope many people see this video and share it.

    Good point about Terry Nation and his ilk of scriptwriters. Where is the inspiration for any aspiring script writer to go into an industry so controlled by 'show runners' who are unwilling to challenge current narratives? It'd be like going to work with the pod people in Invasion of the Body Snatchers. If you let slip that you've got a mind and opinions of your own you'd be out of work and not called for more work - as is demonstrably true. There is no conspiracy theory handwaving that can deny that diversity of opinion has died a death in the media.

      @@guylambert3821 Nation's non-Dalek stories (Keys of Marinus, The Android Invasion) weren't the strongest. Nation died nearly thirty years ago and TV scripting has changed a hell of a lot in the interim, rightly or wrongly.

      @harnois75 7 місяців тому +1

      @@robalexander8065 As an adventure Keys of Marinus is a perfectly satisfying tale, but it also features an episode about blind ignorance and indoctrination, so it weaves in some worthwhile social points too. The point in regard to current commissioning of scripts is that I find it very hard to believe that RTD (who is all for political messaging) would seek a script from someone who doesn't share his politics. Letts employed Hulke; they didn't share the same politics, yet they created memorable television.

    • @robalexander8065
      @robalexander8065 7 місяців тому +1

      @@harnois75 Fair points, well.made. The combination of Terrance Dicks and Barry Letts, who also had opposing political views, created one of THE best eras of the show. The combination of Dicks and his mentor Mac Hulke, created one of THE best serials in the show, it really shouldn't work at 10 episodes but The War Games is phenomenally well-written and acted. Truly gripping TV.
      To be fair, it is a while since I watched Keys, I think a re-watch is on the cards. I love the first half of The Android Invasion, it is so well established and Letts gets just the right level of suspenseful tension but the whole thing then falls apart in parts three and four sadly.

      Well worth exploring many women’s views that it’s not attacking their rights at all, whereas men like Graham Linehan will attack them as “handmaidens” for daring to question what he’s saying. Gay rights aren’t impacted at all. There isn’t a single right a gay man has that has been removed because of trans, queer or any other person, hence why nothing is mentioned here.

    Great interview JT. I got the audiobook (he’s a lovely reading voice) and the interview is a nice supplement…thought you covered a lot of ground in relation to its inspiration..and a lot of colour about GR’s experience. @@WhosViews which is what one of your main problems with this is, isn’t it? The idea that these young people should somehow be worshipping you and doing what you tell them to do, instead of thinking for themselves. I remember when I lived in Soho and there were a lot of older gay men who would sneer at us younger folk having fun. Given what you and Gareth have said in the video, you contributed nothing to the progress of gay rights, unlike Michael Cashman who is rather bitchily mocked in the video, but somehow you think you should be hailed as heroes. For what? Let young people find their own ways to express themselves, why do you constantly feel the need to sneer?

    Gareth makes a comment near the start about how fandom has always been massively 'diverse'.
    And why shouldn't it be? One thing I discovered (eventually) is that your sexuality doesn't actually make you interesting. Being interesting makes you interesting. So you dip your toes into fandom and start talking to a random you just met and next thing you are doing is explaining why Anderson was never Dredd's rookie but it doesn't matter in the movie because they get so much else completely right before explaining in extended details how Fallout New Vegas isn't as good as people claim but has the greatest DLC in the franchise.
    Being interesting makes you interesting. Unless you are trying to cast for a porn shoot or pull a one night stand your sexual preference isn't really that important. This is why I can't see why LQWERTY can ever consider themselves an actual community. All they have in common is they are 'Not Straight' and once you get past that many actually hate the other letters.
    Got the book on order. Hasn't dropped in Australia yet.

    • @guylambert3821
      @guylambert3821 7 місяців тому +1

      The problem is that a significant number of people find LGBTQ+ people’s sexuality interesting, to the point where they use it against us to remove our rights or commit violent attacks. It’s no surprise that people who suffered and continue to suffer that find refuge in groups, and find themselves free to express who they are.

    I watched all of this and found it very interesting. I think Gareth is a very talented man and my past experiences with him were always very positive. However, I just don’t understand where either of you are coming from. Sure, you fundamentally disagree with it all, but what’s the problem?
    Of course, this is something relatively new and society needs to work out the details of how to make it work. That’s what happens when society changes. But there’s a trans person living down the road from me, and it’s not a problem. I just worked with a trans person on something, and it wasn’t a problem. There’s a trans woman in the WI, and it’s not a problem. A younger relative goes to school with a trans girl, and it’s not a problem. I sometimes mess up the new pronouns of a person I know, and it’s not a problem.
    The idea that young people are somehow deluded and it’s a phase etc is exactly what people have said to people who aren’t straight for years. Over-50s have always said “I don’t understand you young people”, that’s part of getting older. But so what? Why does that bother you so much?
    And when it comes down to being gay or lesbian etc, who is stopping you living your life and wanting to be identified as homosexual? It’s like when some straight people complained about gay marriage because it would somehow ruin their own marriage. It doesn’t impact on you at all. To be blunt, it’s not like you’re off down the nightclub and being hit on my someone trans. Even if that did happen, a polite “you’re not my type, sorry” isn’t wrong to say. You don’t have to be attracted to anyone you don’t want to be, let alone go any further.
    What does impact on all of us is this obsession with the idea that someone “leave the kids alone” (to quote you from the Tennant video). The opposition to LGBTQ+ materials in schools is being fuelled by some gay men and people like Graham Linehan accusing us of being “groomers”. Yet when one talks to kids, they know all sorts of things we never knew at their age. They’re not phased by what they learn, it doesn’t change them in the same way endless straight couples in movies clearly had no impact on you. Let’s not try and pretend that any of this bigotry from people who have always been bigoted against LGB people is somehow simply because a trans person has been on TV. If it is, then their alleged allyship was pretty shallow if they’re now ditching you the minute they found a vaguely valid reason to do so.
    I’m not trying to be rude here, but I just don’t get it. I’m not a Christian but I’m not fussed by people who are, so why is this such a big deal? I listened to all 73 mins of this, and I’m still none the wiser other than you simply don’t agree with it all and you don’t like some of the people who campaign for it. I don’t agree with a lot of things in life, I don’t like the way some people on “your side” speak about trans people and openly attack young people on Twitter to make themselves look funny or better, but I don’t go on podcasts telling people they’re deluded and that they’re fundamentally wrong and one day they’ll wake up realising that “they’ve been taken for a mug”.
    I respect the fact that both of you have very different ways of seeing this than I do, that’s up to you, but I don’t understand where the anger and resentment is coming from. Thanks.

      Yes. There are so few trans people, how can they be so upsetting to people? I only know one person who is trans -- don't know his/her name -- works at a Bank I occasionally go to. Seems normal enough. Why would this threaten me, why would I "challenge" them? Lol.

    Just catching up with this. Gareth is such an interesting and engaging person and this is a very watchable interview, JT!
    What happened to Gareth is really deplorable. I am encouraging as many of my friends and fellow Who fans to watch this interview.
    I also think some of those who so readily cancelled Gareth or went along with it, should watch this. Give the guy a fair hearing instead of blindly following the sheep-like cancel culture brigade!! Far too many critics and detractors of perfectly reasonable TV, films and books seek to cancel without really, properly taking time to examine and understand the other side of the coin.
    Sadly we are seeing a generation of (mainly) youngsters, who cannot disseminate culture correctly. View everything literally without nuance and through a very limited social and political prism. They refuse to allow more than one side of a story to be examined much less understood.
    I fear for the future of those trying to inspire and entertain us. Humourless activists with tunnel vision, who can only see a world that satisfies their own selfish views are systematically ruining it for those of us who can see the world in 3D snd enjoy differences of ideas and opinions.
    Thanks JT amd Gareth Roberts!

    While I strongly believe in freedom of speech and all opinions are valid. I think the last decade or so has seen far too many similar and not entirely sane views being given far too much credence and publicity.
    A vocal minority has steered the conversation of the majority for too long and damagingly so. I agree with Gareth that if Labour can achieve a large majority, they won't have to listen to the activists quite so much - if at all for that matter. I have daily conversations with my teenage nephew and nieces (two of whom are old enough to vote for the first time) about the election and although they, almost inevitability, subscribe to some of the ideology discussed, they are realistic enough to see the nuanced manifesto Labour is putting forward. They seem to recognise Labour is more centrist in poltical stance, than the traditional left wing image it usually evokes.
    A lot of first-time voters are approaching the Election with the conviction that Labour is still VERY left wing and very supportive of the issues that activists would have you believe are really "vital". In truth, Labour have repositioned to appeal more to the neo liberal/radical wing of the Tory faithful, in much the same way Tony Blair did in 1997. Whether it is simply a ploy to seem "electable" (as it was then, albeit a hugely successful one) or whether they genuinely will govern with a more authoritarian approach, remains to be seen.
    I believe a great many youngsters may find themselves disappointed by the Labour Government but equally the country is crying out for change and to truly deliver that, the new Government needs as broad an appeal as possible.
    In short, and to use a Who analogy, Steven Moffat recognised (and is on record as saying as much)- Doctor Who needs to appeal to readers of the Daily Mail, just as much as those of The Guardian and The Mirror, in order to have a truly broad, "mainstream BBC1" success.
    RTD seems convinced it should plough a very niche furrow, appealing to youngsters under 30, who are likely to already be activists or the potential activists of tomorrow. This is very different from RTD's feel for his audience in 2005. He was genuinely nervous the show would be a success and approached it with a very broad brush to gather as many viewers as possible. If only he would realise that is exactly what the show needs once more.
