I saw them once, outside a Supermarket in Colchester Essex, in the early 1980s, she was directing him loading up the shopping into a hatchback, it was mustard yellow, the staff were all inside the shop , at the window waving and smiling...she turned to Johnny and said "look at those bastards" and nodded at them.
She was more than an eccentric chef, she used actually basic tools, to connect to the average person, a sense of grander lifestyle...she had great skill.

So tragic... and very darkly comical. I love the line at the end, "Of course, if I had the chance to do things differently... I wouldn't have used quite as much fennel."

Anyone else notice that the rest home was using an ELECTRIC range? Fanny's career was pro-gas ranges all the way.

Agreed! I like how this biopic (to an extent) has re-humanised her somewhat away from the Julia Childs-drag queen-on-steroids caricature that her memory is smothered by nowadays (especially in Britain). Yet I do think that if she was on Hell's Kitchen she would eat Gordon Ramsey for breakfast.

In 1991, four years after Johnnie's death, family friend Phil Bradford found Fanny living in a flat in Chichester where she was living in squalor and seemed disorientated. [18] He sought power of attorney and moved her to a nursing home at Ersham House Hailsham, East Sussex. She died following a stroke on 27 December, 1994. From Wikipedia

    So sad.

Fanny Cradock was larger than life and domineering, with huge presence - when she entered a room, everyone noticed, she was quite terrifying. Julia Davis hasn't come close to capturing her - she's way too girly, soft and inoffensive somehow.
A great shame, as this was an opportunity to tell this amazing woman's story which was an extraordinary one. Fanny created her own image and history and people bought into the myth and made her a star.
She was very damaged in childhood, with a complex relationship with her mother. Hardly touched upon any of that here! Mark Gatiss was superb as long suffering Johnny though, bravo to him.
The end of her life wasn't really handled. She was lonely after Johnnie died because she had fallen out with both her sons and had no real friends. But two middle aged gay men - fans, of course - befriended her and it's said they found her living in squalid conditions in a poky flat and got her into an OAP's home where she was at least taken care of.
Fanny left these two male fans all her personal belongings in her will, including her mink coats. They should have ended this drama with her funeral, attended by just a pair of old queens wearing Fanny's furs!

you've missed the point completely. Oddly, you sound in your review rather like Fanny. It would have been lamentably obvious to finish with her funeral. So much more sophisticated to do what this team have done.

@@neilroland3463 I've just re-read my original post, four years later. I nailed Fanny's life and death. Alas your reply wasn't half so accurate, comprehensive, or entertaining!
That you claim I 'missed the point completely' reveals a lot about you. Struck a chord, perhaps?
Seems you're offended by my observations about her pathetic final years, with only two opportunist fans who gave a damn about her. You reap what you sow in this life, Fanny found out the hard way.

    • @neilroland3463
      @neilroland3463 Рік тому +1

My response was to your assumption that one can equate how good a portrayal is by how slavishly it follows the facts. I don't believe that to be the case. The way you refer to Julia Davis not coming close is just how Fanny would have described her - lamenting someone's performance in the way Fanny did to the woman from the South West who she chose to humiliate. There was no need to ploddingly refer to every last detail and end the play with the predicatability of her funeral. It's artistic license. I'm afraid I feel I've touched a nerve, so expect you will not be able to resist responding to pronto! It makes for fun reading, so don't hold back. I'm afraid I shall have to move on now though.

@@neilroland3463 I'm touched my posts fascinated you enough to respond at such length!
Everyone's entitled to share their opinions here. Just a shame your responses to my posts are as dull, long-winded and pedestrian as your review of this disappointing TV drama. You are dismissed!
