Spring Maintenance of our tropical plants in the greenhouse

  • The end of winter is our "springtime" in the greenhouse. Once the sun starts getting longer in the day the plants just burst with life. It's a job just to keep up with the work but also an opportunity to ensure the plants come back better with each trim or repotting. I recorded this video when it was still winter even now it's officially spring. I go through just a handful of plants and what I do with them this time of year. This is mostly bonsai and pre-bonsai. Now is the time for most of the repotting and cutting back. It's also a time to be wary of wires on branches which will cut in seemingly overnight. If you have the time to keep up with it, keeping a large greenhouse full of tropical plants is a great way to relax and spend a day.

Thanks! That tree is going to be amazing one day but I’m taking it real slow because I’ve had a hard time with them in the past. Maybe later this year I’ll carve it and put it in a respectable pot. If not this year definitely next year.

What you recommend for a beginner bonsai tree/bush? I would love put one in bioactive terrarium one day :) Great tips!

Trident maples and most junipers are good beginners for deciduous trees. Shoot for ficus microcarpa or benjamina in a bioactive. Microcarpa bud back better but benjamina are little bit more bulletproof. Just don't keep the roots too wet in either of them, make sure you have good lighting, and keep them away from the hotspot so you don't burn the leaves.
