The "hard deck" is a simulated groud level for pilot training. During training flights, a hard deck is set, and nothing is supposed to take place below that level.
Aircraft land on carriers, by lowering a hook from the rear of the plane, which snags a tightly-strung steel cable that drastically slows them down in a very short space.
Jet wash is the airflow from the exhaust that can disrupt airflow into the engines of a following aircraft.
I love how bored you look during the romance plot. I also love how you back up Iceman in all their arguments.
What they call "the hard deck" is a simulator of the ground, so if you go "below the hard deck" you are below the ground, meaning, dead. that is why Maverick was got the warning. "don't go below 5,000 feet" means that below it is "the hard deck" so it's not safe.
How do you have repercussions when you did nothing wrong???
I watch a JAG reaction to this movie and react to it from a legal perspective and he would have probably lost his wings on the first order breach for those fly-bys. If he had done everything it showed in this movie would have done life in military prison at least and most likely executed. Not following orders is not a laughing matter in the military.
