Wow, I don't own a K1200, I own a K100, but man.... If I owned one, this video would be a complete god send. I'm sure many in the future will definitely find this video very useful. Keep up the good work!
I’m looking at opening up my new-to-me 2000 K12RS. Recently acquired, and previous owners were not riding it much. I’m expecting that the original clutch o-ring will be dried out and leaking. Viton replacements are available that will not suffer the same fate. I probably will go ahead and replace the main engine seal, since I’ll be in there, and probably the transmission seals as well. This video is a great resource to show the nitty gritty. Access to the trans removal is a bit less involved for the RS, but the important parts first jacking frame and dropping engine are the same. I’ll be referring to your video as I do the job. I truly appreciate such helpful documentation.
I have over 300,000 miles on 2 different 1200LTs. I've done this job a few times, and on 1100 LTs as well, (which are the same clutch). I picked up a couple of tips from this video. Thanks!
Owned a 2000 K1200 LT and sold it 4 yrs ago. Missed it so much ... picking up an immaculate 2002 needing the seal done and totally will do myself now thanks to your video. SO appreciate you taking the time to walk us through all the detailing. Will mentioning my old LT and the 2002 blew the seals out when we had shops change up oil to synthetic. Actually looking forward to doing this now, lol! Thank you so much!
Thank you. Great commentary and photography. Comprehensive description of the whole process. I have only very occasionally seen such a clear, detailed, complete and understandable {not ambiguous} description of any mechanical workshop process. The photography was organised so that it was clear where each part was intended to go with tips on areas to be cautious. Recently, I have been considering purchase of a BMW K1200 LT. This video enabled me to understand what to look for on a used/second hand BMW K1200. It also assured me that if this job were to be required, I would be capable of undertaking the work involved.
I just bought a K12GT with a bit over 50,000 miles, so a clutch job is coming. I'm actually encouraged, this looks easier than the same job on my R1150GS. I'm surprised not to see clamps on the airbox tubes where they connect to the throttles. Pretty sure they should have clamps.
Very nice instructional video. Your lighting was outstanding. There were a few sped up parts around disassembling tons of wiring that I wanted to slow down. I really liked how you called out the sizes and counts of all those bolts and screws. I am a total mech newb and really enjoyed this. I look forward to more.
Thanks!, if you want a sped-up area slowed down you can adjust your playback speed by clicking the little gear in the bottom right corner of the video :)
Like mentioned earlier I now own a 1991 K100. Picked it up pretty "cheap" we shall see. It was in a flood, up to the mirrors. Mechanicgot it runningbut the former owner never came back to pick it up. Hopefully i can fix her up right and get her back on the road....just found your channel
This video is a true master class, both in how to do the mechanical work, and how to make a video showing how to do the mechanical work! It is simply awesome! Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to produce such a superior and helpful video. David
My old K1200r was nothing like this! I had the airbox out to try to solve a high idle issue. Sold that one for a S1000r and a G650 X-Challenge. I really enjoy the X!
Currently owning a K1200LT and having already done the job of replacement clutch and main seal I can tell you it is nowhere as easy and fast as this video shows. It’s a real pain and something that is not enthusiastically carried out without having been forced to do it by necessity.
I see you get a lot of messages. Your video is awesome. I still do not know where to buy the seal Kit doesn't come with all the pieces. Once I get fat I can finish the project thanks again for the awesome video
I'm just bought a 2001 and had no clue it had this issue. Contact me if anyone is interested in taking it off my hands. I don't have a shop to work on, and don't ha e to $$ to give to a dealer. I hope to not lose the money I just paid yesterday. I have t had a bike in 8 years and was so happy to get this.
Man, I am glad I didn't get a LT. when I bought my RT, I asked about the LT and it had been EOL, so no more. The clutch still isn't easy on mine. I'd rue the day I have to do it.
I just want to say wow. Great video! You are making it possible for guys to do it themselves, anywhere they are. looks like a terrible job though. 20 hours? Thanks!
your doing a great job but on other video explaining this process the fellow torqued the big nut in and i believe he bought new large nut and I believe replacement bolts but main point was torqueing the large nut
Thank you so much for the video listen I don't know where to buy the kit for the rear seal with the orange and the other pieces. Can I buy those things from you?
Question, do you know why some people on the boards have a 30 mm socket with some part of it cut out for some reason? Like what's the purpose for that? Also what speciality tools are needed for this beyond the alignment tool and would you happen to know about what clutch pieces someone usually wants to purchase for this job?
I am hoping to get a bike by the early summer. This sort of puts me off one of these as I don't have the tools nor the work space to do this. I can only imagine what BMW UK or any garage would charge to do this. Maybe it's a reason that they are very cheap to buy.
Do you know if there’s bmw tool like ista p or inpa for these bikes? I work on their cars all the time but I am able to buy this bike in blue for 1000 that needs a clutch
hi mate. where are you at..do you get parts and send them to anyone. or do you know where I can get parts at a fair price? like the way you pull apart and put them together and explain I am in Queensland Aust . as I said love your videos
Is it the same effort just to remove the gearbox of a K1200 RS (589)? I have a strong suspicion that the transmission input shaft seal is broken, or that the surface seal on the transmission plate is leaking. top video
I mean while your at it may as well change the oil, transmission oil, rear drive oil, air filter, spark plugs and just do whatever service your due for while it’s apart.
My clutch on my 03 k12rs went out could you please guide me to the link where I can order the seals, o ring, and clutch I would really appreciate it Bike stop won’t go, gear is on 1 but won’t take off
Nice job. Ive done the R1150 upgraded clutch kit to fix the stripping spline problem.,what a ball ache they are :( Youd think BMW would man up and fix their hideous problems, theyre no longer a quality manufacturer, theyre down there with mz etc imo.

I have two questions. One how do you know you have that main seal leak? And number two is this an inevitable situation for this bike at a certain mileage? It's unbelievable that BMW makes such expensive motorcycles but then they torture you when you have to fix them.
I had a 2000 K1200LT. I never had to change the clutch or ABS or any of that stuff. I was lucky. I was going to buy another one. After watching this video. I'm changing my mind. Way too much work involved.
@@tomblair1220 watch this video. You may need to get creative on removing that stripped nut. But the pivot pin should still be able to be removed if just the nut is stripped

Wow, this is one of the most comprehensive "walkthroughs" on the 1200LT ever. Thankyou and well done.
Glad it was helpful!
I appreciate more the work the mechanics have to do. Wow.
No way would this difficult project task be possible without this great video. "THANK YOU"
