    Hello, I own a 1976 BMW R90/6 with 27,000 original miles from Nevada. I am watching this video because I would like to learn about the driveline in my motorcycle. Thank you for explaining everything in detail. I had new tires installed on my motorcycle along with a full safety inspection. I enjoy your videos that you share on you tube, as it makes it easy to understand along with following the repair manual. Cheers.

    I owned one from 1981 and gave it to my son recently. It stood in the Garage for 15 years and has to be restored. Changing gas, oil, spark plugs and cleaning of the carburators let the machine run. Now all the other oil, hardened shaft seals and so on are to be changed If necessary. That's the reason I watched your well done videos. I really appreciate that.

    Hey BMW GUY. I have been riding for 50 years (many different brands, none of them BMW’s). I ran across your video work early summer ‘24 while considering purchase of a new R1250RT. A serious work related injury has delayed the opportunity to purchase and ride for at least a year, so your videos on maintaining BMW’s has kept my attention. I particularly enjoy your work on the older models, and I appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge and build confidence in us DIY’ers to do the homework and then the grunt work. Thank you. From a former Wisconsinite…

    To answer you: I'm still big into riding motorbikes (and scooters and bicycles) in my 50s, so I've inevitably recently started riding a BMW R1200. I'm loving it... so it looks like I've joined the cult ;) I'm on an R currently, but open to considering all kinds of other BMWs, depending on how life pans out - everything from a C650GT for city life, to a GS to try some off-roading, to ... an old school classic like an airhead (for radically different scenarios, obviously...).
    I do all but the most serious wrenching on my vehicles (plus on cars for family & friends).
    So I'm here to learn maintenance of my R1200; as well as assessing what work on other potential BMWs looks like... I'm really enjoying that. Supporting DIY is also a fantastic way to avoid reckless waste, by keeping these lovely things running longer, better and cleaner.
    I'm in Sydney, Australia. I'd obviously buy from you if I were in the US.
    Thank you so much for helping us all maximise enjoyment of our BMW bikes. All the best! 👍🙏😉

    I'm watching this in amazement at how easy it is to do a clutch job on an airhead vs doing an oilhead which I've done on my 96 R1100RS. I now own a 1977 R100/7 and watching this for future maintenance. Thank you for sharing this.

    Too bad, that there was no UA-cam, back in those days, 'cause my R50/5 had the same issue as your R100RS.

    I own a '03 1150GS. Viewing your video as entertainment. It never cease to amaze me how BMW designed their bikes. With the ST1100 Honda demonstrated that you can have a longitudinal engine and shaft drive and a clutch that is fairly easy to dismantle... I'm a hobby mechanic and work on BMW as well as Japanese bikes. The Japanese bikes are so much easier to work on. You need a few spanners and there you go, makes little difference whether it is a Honda or a Yamaha. The Japanese know that a complicated design does not mean character, it is just bad design...

    Really enjoyed watching your video as I am a BMW airherad owner. You reused the flywheel mount bolts and the driveshaft connecting bolts which the shop manual says must be replaced along with the clutch bolts. You just unbolted the clutch with out the let out bolts despite the shop manual warning of the posibility of severe injury, and survived to tell the tale. I would be interested to hear your thoughts in the comments. Thanks

    • @Chucka10
      @Chucka10 Місяць тому

      In the field, things are done differently from the factory manual. I wouldn’t necessarily replace flywheel bolts and the clutch bolts are probably no real danger as I have never seen any mechanics do it the retaining bolt method and I would say cars and trucks have more spring in the pressure plates than a airhead BMW. JMHO.

    I did this same job to my 82rs model, not ever having done it before. Because the bmw was new to me, I went in there to check the splines, to swap in a new main seal, and to replace the oil pump and O ring there. All went pretty well, but my hate for the drive shaft boot is strong, fussing with the 12mm bolts, in and out of gear, along with the hose clamp is curse worthy work. You should go through the cam shaft blocking tip, its not that hard to rig for prevention. Also - you can fabricate some of the tools you used - drawings of the main seal installer, the clutch aligner, and more are online, and can be 3d printed, or fabricated.

    Very well done video. Did that clutch kit have marks for balance orientation? I recently did the clutch on my 89 R100gs. The kit was a Sachs kit from EME and it was marked. I thought all BMW kits would have marks. I have just found your channel, so maybe you have already done this, but doing some videos like this with a paralever would be helpful. Definitely more of a pain removing the driveshaft than on the older models.

    On my Moto Guzzi's i find that a slipping clutch is often caused by a rusted prise-axle. The splined axle on witch the clutchplate has to go a little forward and backward. This often occurs when a bike has been standing still over a longer period. I think i solved it a few times bij using the bike frequently and spraying some penetrating spray (holding graphite) into the hole on the flywheel housing. Did you ever see this occuring on any BMW with a dry clutch ?
