  • Join us in celebrating the life and legacy of Ras Shorty I, the father of Soca music. Born in 1941, this legendary performer from Trinidad and Tobago has left a lasting impact on the music industry. Watch this tribute video to learn more about his contributions and influence on Caribbean music.
The “ Father of Soca” and today his new invention “JAMOO” (Jahovah’s Music) brings together spiritually conscious messages
Ras Shorty “I” is one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most famous performers and his music continues to be among the most innovative and uplifting of the Caribbean. The “ Father of Soca” and today his new invention “JAMOO” (Jahovah’s Music) brings together spiritually conscious messages with the contemporary sound of his family band “ THE LOVE CIRCLE”. Ras Shorty “I” and the Love Circle are dedicated: “To changing the manner of our age by the example of our lives and the power of the spirit of our music in Jesus name”. This music explores the ills of society such as drug abuse and AIDS and endeavors to find solutions through meaningful lyrics. Ras Shorty “I” musical career began in the 1960's when he was known as “The Lord Shorty”, “The Love Man” and “ the world’s sexiest calypsonian”. In the 1970's he began experimenting with calypso music to give it a more contemporary sound, expand the expressive possibilities of the music and incorporated the East Indian music within the calypso. His innovation led to the genre of “Sokah music”, “ the soul of calypso”, which is now the most popular music of the Caribbean. Shorty’s string of hits include “Indrani”, “The Art of Making Love”, “Endless Vibration”, “He lick she”, “Sweet Music” and the list continues.

Many thanks for posting this Ras Shorty-I interview! Ras Shorty-I couldn't have made it clearer what he did to invent soca music, what his inspiration was and what were the main elements he used to do it and the music recordings are there to back exactly what he did.

He is not considered... He is the inventor. And he said he did not use soul music. It was the mix of Calypso and East Indian music.

Garfield Blackman (1941-2000)- Lord Shorty or Ras Shorty I however you want to name him, call him, remember him by. He said in an interview with Alvin Daniel Calypso Showcase (1992-2000) that what he was trying to do was give the music a sort of Dougla (Indian/Negro) rhythm. "I was trying to get away from this nigger/coolie attitude (forgive the language- these are his words). "We came here from Africa trying to get rich, they (the Indians) came here and we are not going back so (going back to India/Africa)- remember "Africanism" took over in the 1970s'- the Afro hairstyle, style of clothing. Shorty's music goes back to the 1960s'- songs like "Sixteen Commandments" (1963)- the days of Telco All Stars & Telco label. In the 1970s' the trajectory of music changed in Trinidad. In Jamaica (thanks to Bob Marley (1945-1981) & the Wailing Wailers- then renamed Bob Marley & The Wailers- Reggae came about after Ska in the 1960s'- (even Byron Lee & the Dragonaires had a hand in the Ska style). 1973- Lord Shorty with music supplied by Acme Dil E Nadan did "Indrani" & the flip side of the 45 was "Calypso Is Ours" music supplied by Ed Watson & The Brass Circle. When Shorty enters the Dimache Gras of 1973, he is charged with obscenity after rendering "The Art of Making Love" (1973) in front of Prime Minister Dr. Eric Eustace Williams (1911-1981) & his guest at the time, Michael Manley of Jamaica. In 1974 he had two (2) LP- "The Love Man Carnival '74 Hits" (1974) which flopped & "Endless Vibrations" (1974) with tracks like "Zena", "Love The Hifalutin Way". In 1976, Lord Shorty had his own tent called The Professionals- this along with his LP "Sweet Music" (1976) hit the market late. "Sweet Music" "Kim", "Cory Iron"- referring to an Iron man from San Fernando (south Trinidad) who if it is to be believed was stabbed to death!!! "Oh Trinidad"- a social commentary on the state of affairs at the time are just some of the classics from this album. As Shorty pointed out in the interview w/ Alvin Daniell, by 1977 his band The Vibrations International dismantled (broke up) in Canada- where most of his recordings were done, along with other artistes (i.e Acme Dil E Nadan- East Meets West (1980) & New Dawn (1981). He was contemplating suicide (I shouldn't give you all the info- check out Calypso Showcase for yourself)!!!! His last LP (from the Soca period) was "Soca Explosion" (1978) which had another set of great melodies- "Who God Bless" "Gone Are The Days", "Om Shanti"- which was used by Indian playback singer Kishore Kumar in the film Karz (1980) for the films motion picture soundtrack. Also not forgetting the social commentary "Money Eh No Problem"- which were the words from the speech of Trinidad's PM Eric Williams (1911-1981). Afterwards, Shorty recorded Prematee with his group the Love Circle featuring the vocals of Calypsonian Wanderer in 1983. "Watch Out My Children" was released in 1989- an anthem against the use of drugs. As Maestro once sang "Trinidadians Eh Really Know What They Want"- Mr Trinidad (1975)- I believe Shorty would agree because he was not only disenchanted with the music & the direction the culture was going into- he literally condemned it in song with "That Eh Good Enough" (1992). I don't think people can really give this man enough credit- from tuning Steel pan as a youngster, to singing Calypso, to creating two (2) musical forms of expression- Soca in the 1970s' & Jamoo- Gospel style Calypso/Soca in the 1980s'. Don't take my word for it- look it up on UA-cam, most of his LPs' are up & there are video clips where you can see him performing in New City in the 1990s' via Gentle Benjamin & CultureShare Archives. Rest In Peace Lord Shorty (1941-2000) God Bless You Sir!!!! 😎

@@caribbeaninsighttv594 I am in Florida and you are in the City that Never Sleeps- New York City. The only way we could link up is if I had your number & address. Truth be told, most of this knowledge is from me reading things online. Or even reading things in my collection- album covers, CD liner notes. As I write this, I just remembered- in 2000, we lost three (3) icons Lord Kitchener- The Grandmaster died in Mount Hope from myeloma- cancer in which the body doesn't produce enough red blood cells to keep you alive. Sundar Popo died in May that year of kidney/renal failure (my mother would know more about this as she is a Registered Nurse, but for the last 20 years she works at a clinic specializing in Dialysis- Home Hemo & Peritoneal- Peritoneal Dialysis is her cup of tea (her specialty). In July 2000 we bid adieu to Lord Shorty- Ras Shorty I who also had the same issue like Kitchener I believe. I believe he broke a bone in his hand, and that started his downward spiral health wise. Lady V, you are not the only one to compliment me. As a matter of fact, one time somebody said to me via UA-cam "My dear Riyadh you sure know your Calypso history. Professor Gordon Roehler would have been proud. I responded by saying I wish I could have met the man- same goes for Sir Ellis Clarke in Belmont, and even Selwyn Ryan. I was fortunate to see Sundar Popo perform alongside Babla & Kanchan also Anand Yankarran (1965-2017) in 1998 during their East Meets West Tour. My cousin in Trinidad was lucky (my aunt took him to the show) to see Lord Kitchener- of course this was the time when he gave us one of his last offerings "Toco Band". I have watched him perform this on UA-cam (the music video/ him alongside Dane Gulston on the pan). I was fortunate to see the Mighty Sparrow, Crazy & Roy Cape All Stars including comedian Tommy Joseph at a Legends concert in 2005. I would tell people via UA-cam that Sparrow should stop performing. Here's my reasoning behind it- and you will understand why. Sometimes you will see clips of him via CNC3 in Trinidad and as he is performing he slips into a diabetic coma. The man keeps coming back from the jaws of death- "Sparrow Dead" (1969) 😂 Even I have been complimented by Alvin Daniell from Calypso Showcase (1992). I gave him a few lines of Sparrow "Duncan The Saga Man" i.e. "Duncan start to plead w/she, bawling "Have some sympathy"/The child is insane, but the mother start to question Duncan again." 😂 If you look on UA-cam, somebody posted the entire album with this song & I said The message is clear: Be careful who you end up with in life. You might be with someone "Who Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest".😂. Lady V, Thank You for your Blessings!!! I enjoy your programs!!! I will say this though- forgive me but Soca/Chutney nowadays isn't worth it. After Sundar died in 2000, Adesh Samaroo gave us "Rum Til I Die" (2003) and the Rum craze took over chutney for a decade. Some prime examples are Karma i.e. "Rum Is Meh Lover" & "Ah Drinka". The only rum tunes I care for is Sparrow's Drunk & Disorderly (1972)- his Road March from 1972 & "Drink A Rum" by Kitchener. There are two (2) versions- the original from Melodisc (1954) & the updated one with Charlie's Roots from 1976- the one I enjoy more. As far as Soca is concerned Shorty condemned Preacher in 1994 when he sang "Jump Up & Wave"- I wonder what he would say about the culture today??? Personally I don't keep up with this stuff as much anymore. I remember telling people on UA-cam Baron is the only artist who could sing Soca period. They in turn telling me Machel could sing Soca (Machel to me goes back to the days when he did "Too Young To Soca" (1986), "Big Truck" (1997) and "Madder Dan Dat" (2005)- I lost track of his music since. People's preference (musical tastes) are different. Madder Dan Dat (2005) was released when I was in high school. By this time UA-cam (2005) had now come on the scene. Today you have Facebook, Twitter, now Tik Tok (2020). We are not only in the digital age, but to me its getting out of hand (hard to keep up with). I am signing off. Until we meet again!!!! 😎
