A pleasure to hear - I only wish the current generation of soca 'artists' could pay heed and take the music back to the roots laid down by Shorty. But first they must listen. The brother knows what he's talking about!!! He played soca along the route it was supposed to go: Holy Spirit driven, which means it hits the heart whilst striking through the bone and marrow!!!
Where is his children now? It would be so nice if they can rise like reggae took their music back to the original and they are doing wonderful things!!!!
As he said "I was a prince in the world" to me Ras Shorty was referring to the days when he was known as Lord Shorty which was from 1963 when he did "Cloak & Dagger" till 1978 when he did "Soca Explosion". This man has done a lot for the culture of Trinidad & Tobago. He really did unite the people- the Indians/Africans/Chinese/Lebanese.... When he did "Who God Bless" & "Watch Out My Children" in 1989 all he was doing was warning people about the dangers of drug abuse as well as being blessed & highly favored. I truly believe by today's standards Soca is nothing but pure garbage- bullshit plain & simple. Destra Garcia, Machel Montano, Fay Ann Lyons should heed the words of this man- take a leaf from his book. The music is not worth it!!! Calypso/Soca needs to be resurrected!!! Artists like Crazy, Explainer are doing what they can, but there is only so much you can do!!! The younger generation needs to listen to Calypso/Kaiso and understand how to compose (write) music, lyrics, melody with a moral (lesson) behind the song. Don't let your history, culture & heritage go down the drain!!!!!
Every generation changes the culture and innovates what came before it. Calypso is the form that gave birth to all these styles of music. However, Calypso predates Dixieland and you can hear it in the early recordings. Kitchener and Sparrow didn’t play Soca, that was Calypso.
Did you not hear anything this man said? He created sokah and spelt it SOKAH. One musician colleague of his named it soca and he basically said why not. She’s just following what he originally intended in her own right.

Lord Shorty didn't exactly leave Soca behind in 1977. Remember, he did "Prematee" with Calypsonian Wanderer in 1983 with the Love Circle.
