As part of a £1.5Million investment, Go North East purchased 7 Wright Streedecks in early 2016 to replace the Volvo B7TL Plaxton presidents registered in the year 1999, which wore "Pronto" Branding, a New brand for the X21 was decided for the new vehicles, this was the "Castles Express", the reasoning behind the brand is because the route links Newcastle, Chester Le Street, Durham, Bishop Auckland, all of which have Prominent Historic Castles.
