I was tasked to play the mallet book as a drummer focused player and really struggled with this tune. It took all of my practice time and the piano player still had to double with me. Now I finally acquired a practice vibe set and have taken a 2nd look at your videos which assisted me in preparation some years ago. Thank you for this wonderful performance, it's quite spot on.
I only have one set of mallets, and only vibraphone plus bongo, but it still kinda works. Just play the timpani on the bongo and the xylophone on the vibraphone. Isn't the same, but I still get the practice in. I still want to properly learn timpani one day.
If you still haven't been able to play timpani, I'd recommend learning how to tune by ear. Learn how to hum different notes accurately as you listen to them. My band uses a chromatic pitch instrument (a circular harmonica kind of thing), but we've also used glockenspiels to get the note. Learning how to tune is by far the trickiest part at the start, and it's a pretty big part of all-county/district/state auditions here.
Orchestral stands for glockenspiel are generally made to do that I think. You just adjust them to the wanted height and put them so they are slightly above the vibraphone.
I had to play an excerpt from this piece for an audition and your video helped me a lot to be able to hear the vibe part specifically

Absolutely nuts playing 🤘🏻
You make it look so easy :D
Making Leonard happy.. what a pro, when this is your gig you just concentrate and the auto pilot turns on..
That is so enjoyable. Thanks for posting.

I got a rocket in my pocket!
Great job Joe! Which do you enjoy the most, the percussion part or the drum kit part of this number?
I've never played the drum part so I'm not sure.
The dude singing in the back sounds super thrilled
Fabulous 🎉
This is awesome.
Cool! Haha
What device(s) do you use to mount your glockenspiel slightly above your vibes?
