- Hi everyone!!! Oh Boy. This was my first time attending a Seed Swap. I sure hope this video does it justice. This one was a hard one to edit because I just wanted to show you everything. I hope you enjoy coming along with me looking at all the seeds.

Thanks so much. I wish I had stopped and asked about the greasy beans with someone local but being in such a room full of seeds I was a bit scatterbrained. Hopefully at my next seed swap I’ll be a little more composed. 🤣❤️

I bought tons from Jim and I have nearly 100% germination rate. I haven't gotten to order from Ken Fry yet.
Looks like it was a fun day. I could have sworn I heard your hubby state, he was just the driver.😅 How sweet of him to drive you and do all the camera work. He's a keeper. That's exactly what my husband does. So supportive of my crazy obsession.
I will definitely be doing a seed haul. It’s a big ol bag of stuff. After I record the seed haul I’m planning on starting some more tomatoes and peppers that I got from there.
And my husband is the absolute best. He does so much for me that he otherwise wouldn’t care at all about. Im a very very lucky woman.

Thanks for making the trip. This year, we focused on getting seeds BACK into Appalachia - that had previously been curated outside the region. In August, our area was hit with unprecedented flooding which consumed homes, people, garden plots, and our spirit. The day of the swap, devastating winds hit our area. Living just a few miles from the swap, we encountered many trees across the road, cars with broken windshields, and power outages.
Greasy Beans are green beans which lack the little “hairs” on the pods, making them have an almost oily looking sheen. They are prized for their rich flavor which makes an amazing beefy “pot likker.”. They are also strung up with pods intact to dry - producing the regional favorite “leather britches.” Bill Best, Paul Douglas, and Brad Wilson could talk until the end of days about the virtues of beans!
The Appalachian Seed Swap Pikeville KY is our facebook group. The swap is. actually in its 11th year, and is organized by Pike County Extension volunteers and The Pikeville Farmers Market. Cutting of the Cushaw, our signature opening ceremony, is a nod to the Harless Creek Farmer Brown White Cushaw which was nearly lost a decade or so during severe flooding in our area. The swap is ALWAYS free admission, and a great way to kick off the season. Always held the first Saturday in April..

It was an insanely windy day. When we left we actually drove by a forest fire that had just begun. As well as saw several trees down. I’m sorry your area sees so much weather devastation. It’s a wonderful thing that you put together the seed swap. I’m sure something like that takes so much time and effort to do. I can’t even imagine.

I’m glad you enjoyed watching it. It was over 2 hours of videos I had to go through and figure out how to put it into a nice video. My dear husband was such a fantastic photographer. I love him to pieces.
And I fell in love with Ken Fry. He was the absolute sweetest. And I’m mad at myself I didn’t get a picture with him. Definitely won’t forget at the next one. ❤️😊

Wow that looked like a lot of fun getting to meet folks you have seen before on youTube. This is a very new world of growing with the intent to harvest and trade seeds. So the video was filled with new ideas for me. I will be looking for a seed swap like this in my area. Thank you for filming as much as you did. Jen, YES to seed haul !! This has me excited for the Asheville herb festival in a few weeks in NC. They'll have tinctures, heirloom plants n herbs exotic plants etc Think I'll have to bring a bag for sure , and some of my 1020 solid trays 🍅😁

Oh I’m totally hooked now. I’m already planning on the next one. There’s one in Indiana In January. That’s even further away but it supposed to be a really big one.

Forgot to add , Greasy beans are amazing and a big deal in the Carolinas for sure ! I would've gone ham seeing all those varieties for sure ! I've only grown the Grits variety because my granny always grew them and we'd help snap them in half before she'd cook them for dinner 🌻 I definitely suggest to experiment and grown some to see if you're a fan 💕
I used to sit on the porch with my mom too and snap green beans. Or shuck corn. Good memories that at the time I never thought I’d hold them so dear. I’m not a big cooker of beans except in chili and soups. I need to find some good recipes. I wish I would have spent more time at those bean tables and looked and learned more. Next seed swap I’ll take more time at each table. I was just to darn excited to be there I couldn’t think straight. 😆
@@jencordial I love greasy beans at the younger stage . I cook them like regular green beans , I have grown them for the dried beans but love the pods more , so good with onion and beef bouillon 😋

So awesome! The one I just went to one where they just threw packets on the tables and no one wanted to trade. I think it was one of 6 people that brought trades. This looks like somuch fun!!
I’m tossing around the idea of going again this year. It’s one of the bigger ones that’s semi close to me. I was planning to go to one last weekend but Ben had been sick and was recovering and it was over seven hours away so we decided it could wait til next year.
Bummer! I'm looking fir another one but hard to find over here in WA. Definitely want to see what you got! I have tov watch again and write down all those tomato growers you mentioned! You do have the best videos! I've always been tomato obsessed but TLC woke me up to realize how many types there are! Black Krim started my obsession! @@jencordial We run a cattle operation as well as the greenhouse and garden, it is pretty busy. Our son also owns a business and that is his really busy time, so we can not get away and have him watch the farm.

She was fantastic. I loved taking to her. Her table and setup with all her plants was fantastic.
I don’t know if they have anything like this in Florida I haven’t done any research. We have echo farm here on the west coast if you have not heard of it, check it out and make a trip to Florida lol as it’s a nice place to vacation.
Oh I love the west coast of Florida. I love to vacation at the beaches there. The water is gorgeous. I’ll definitely have to look up echo farms. That’s be great to stop at next time we vacation down there.
