Well, here goes. All of these tips are pretty much the same old same old. Nothing new here, nothing we haven’t heard before, they lack the ability to inform a driver of the things that he/she needs to make the “driver” safer! This video is nothing more than generic tips that for the most part are unattainable. Nobody walks around their vehicle before they drive, your mirror adjustment segment sets the mirrors out too far for a normal driving position, seat belt use only holds the driver or the body in place depending on the circumstances, no human has the capability to give 100% attention to driving. The human brain is only capable of 4 or 5 conscious thoughts at any given moment. We basically drive asleep. Telling a driver to limit distractions or not to drive after drinking etc. is pointless unless they can be made to realize the limit of their conscious cognitive abilities. Forming good habits is the only way to increase safety. Standard driving with bad habits is the reason 40,000 people die every year. In order to make the “driver” safer here are a few good tips; #1...never drive without the headlights AND taillights on, no matter the time of day or weather conditions. “Lights on for safety”, this will make the vehicle more visible to other drivers and pedestrians. #2...proper communication is the key to reducing the chance of crashing. Turn signals need to be used for “every turn, every lane change, every time”, without regard for whether or not the driver sees another vehicle or not! #3...proper turns; turning left to the right lane or right to the left lane is dangerous, large vehicles are the exception. Crossing solid lines is dangerous, they are solid for a reason! #4...merge lanes, whether “at grade” or entry or egress, are designed to get the driver merged with minimal problems. These must be used properly, with signals on before getting to the merge or egress lanes, and only cancelled after the merge is complete. #5...when stopped behind another vehicle, make sure to be at least a car length back. The driver should be able to see the ground behind the rear tires of the vehicle in front of them. When stopped behind a large vehicle, the driver needs to make sure the driver of that large vehicle can see you in his/her mirrors. Responsibility, communication, patience, and empathy is what our society lacks, and it rears its ugly head on every road in this country. Driver training needs to be modified to fit 21st century technology.
