Also Alocasias are HEAVY feeders in my experience. I have a frydek, one single plant in a pot, that would not hold on to more than 3/4 leaves. I put slow release fertilizer pellets in the soil and just started generally fertilizing more and now its got 7 leaves, a pup, and its flowering.
I saw a tree documentary on prime and they explained how Plants talk to each other through the root system. There was one main tree and root system, and the other trees in the area intertwined their roots with the main tree. I think all plants love to be potted together. I do that with all of my collection.
I always find that it's cheaper to buy 2 small plants n plant them together than buying the bigger one. Ur totally right makes a big difference 💯 And ur babes r gorgeous 😍 😍
Pon was the game changer for my Alocasia’s 🙌🏽 in soil they developed a bacterial leaf infection but in pon my black velvet is flowering 🥹 I was able to root corms in pon as well & now have 4 baby velvets. Mine is directly under a grow light & thriving. Your black velvet is stunning 😍 Great video, thanks!
Oh i was struggeling (!) With mine too untill i found the video of a collector in Jakarta that kept them in bark and lava rocks (i think). Changed mine to a siolles chunky mix and they have finally be growing. My stingray even pupped. It's amazing how pretty they can get once you figure them out!
Yeah I have my Melo in pon but the Bisma and Dragon Scale in LECA. Wanna see which one does better. My Regal Shield is in LECA under a grow light and just pushed out a largish new leaf. Still trying to figure them out but at least none are dying and we are going into winter now so here's praying 😆
These are some great tips. I've always wanted an alocasia, but I've been scared to try even though I've got a pretty green thumb and like 30 house plants already. I just picked up a small I think alocasia polly or amazonica from Home Depot yesterday. So excited to see it grow bigger.
I'm going to start using it. Seems like all the Big Box stores carry Miracle Gro. I don't really care for it, definitely on the hunt to try something new.
Thanks for the video. I don’t have great luck with Alocasia, but will try the semi hydro- spider mites seem to seek out Alocasia more then any other plant at least at my house 😂. Great video and love your plants
I only have a silver Dragon and we are trying to get used to each other. He got brown tips lost a few leaves and now his new leaves are growing in smaller. So I moved him into a south window his two new leaves don't have brown tips. So I don't know if he's trying to go dormant or was just not happy. He was also totally drenched when he got here and he seems to be potted in sphagnum moss. Not sure what to do with him, right now we just stare at each other 🥴 he is pretty 😍
So happy to hear someone talk about Jacks fertilizer, aka Peters been around forever an large nurseries use this fert. Also comes in a tropical blend an one for orchids. Thanks for tips, haven’t tried Pon but mix Happy Frog an pumice so far so good.💚💚💚
The timing of this video is perfect! I’ve never had an alocasia before until I got one on clearance this past winter, a frydeck with 1 dying leaf. It ended up having 4 corms which I now have in little cups with sphagnum moss with 5 beautiful leaves all with active growth! Ahhh I’m so scared to move them to something more permanent I hope they don’t get mad at me. I’m thinking I want to move them directly into pon and not even mess with a soilless mix. I don’t have any self watering pots available but I do have a glass container I can use without drainage. I’m not 100% confident with pon or alocasia so this really will be another experiment for me, it’s been successful so far so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that when I move them to pon soon they love it. Wish me luck!!
That’s awesome! I love the frydek and especially one on clearance lol I think they’ll love the pon life. Clear containers can be great to keep a close eye on the roots especially since it’s new for you. Keep us updated!
Thanks for the tips. For me all love sun except cuprea, it points down if the light isn’t just right. I truly think alocasia, begonia, and calathea are outdoor plants tho lol. Mine seem to love “death row” under a tree and neglect! Great video!
AAAAAAAAH! I think I might've been the person who requested a video with a focus on Alocasia in semi-hydro! And if it wasn't me, it SHOULD'VE BEEN me, especially because we had a lovely exchange in which you were super encouraging after I explained I had killed 2 Black Velvets and 2 Stingrays in soil but was determined to try again, in pon this time. You were kind enough to give me some pointers, and most importantly, reassurance that I would learn and would succeed. I now have 1 larger and 2 smaller Stingrays, 1 Amazonica Polly, and 1 Bambino from a corm I rescued. I also have a pot with a Silver Dragon and a Dragon Scale together because I like the look of them side-by-side. All of them are doing great in pon! I have yet to replace the Black Velvet, but I will. Someday I will feel comfortable enough with my level of expertise 😆to buy a Jacklyn and a variegated Frydek. Thank you for this video, it was such a joy to watch!
Very informative and enjoyable video! Thank you for all your tips as well. I can keep them alive, however, some thrive and the others not so much.😵💫. Your Black Velvets potted together are awesome! Your Regal Shield may be the largest and the most beautiful one I have ever seen. It’s obvious they are loving your care. Great job! 👌🪴🥰
Yesterday I put my polly in leca after having it in water for a week and a half. This was the only alocasia I've managed to keep alive so I'm hoping she doesn't die on me. I have like 20 corms growing of all my dead ones lmao, I will be putting those in pon. Fingers crossed x)
Your so cute , love your Alocasia’s. You should get a zebrina I love how long they are and in my experience grows the fastest out of all my alocasias and looks really cool.
Your alocasia collection is awesome! So you still had spider mite problems even in semi-hydro....darn! I thought the water/moisture would deter them!! 😩
My alocasia Zebrina loved my DIY PON. In my 2 years of having it, it ONLY held onto 4 leaves after i put it in PON. I will onlu ever use PON for alocasia. (If i ever buy more)
That’s interesting about your Frydek dying back because of the neem oil solution getting into the pon. My Frydek is also in pon and I occasionally heavily spray the pon with the same neem oil solution and the roots are not affected. It’s in a self watering pot though and I do flush it twice a month.
girl my Alocasia's are in a terracotta but the soil mix is dense idk what I'm doing but they're loving it 😂 one of them didn't even go dormant. And they're right up under the grow light. I was hyyyyyype to say the least lol
I’m thinking of doin a genus each month. So stay tuned for polls in the community tab to vote on the next genus. But for philo I usually choose leca to give it a bit more aeration and it’s better able to have a dry out period. And my philos in pon tend to get yellow tips.
Oh wow ok thanks for sharing!
Yes I agree! I water my alocasias with foliage pro every time I water and they love it 😀
What is the name of fertz you use?
I’ve been using jacks houseplant special
More alocasia content! Plant chores, nuances between the types plant styling, literally anything!
Loving this channel 😊
Thanks soo much for the suggestions! And glad your enjoying it

There was one main tree and root system, and the other trees in the area intertwined their roots with the main tree. I think all plants love to be potted together. Wow that’s very interesting. It deff seems that way that multiple plants in pot jus seems to grow better together wow thanks for sharing that
Very interesting! I saw something similar on PBS. Thanks for sharing! 🪴
@@peggymalabuyoc9150 I will try and find it again and reply back with the name.
How kind. That would be great! Thank you! 👌
@Peggy Malabuyoc "Intelligent Trees" and "The hidden life of trees". Both have a wealth of info.
I put all my alocasia under a grow light because I live in a Philly row home with little natural light and they love it.
Heyy from Philly! I love Philly!
I always find that it's cheaper to buy 2 small plants n plant them together than buying the bigger one. Ur totally right makes a big difference 💯

Thank you! And right? Jus makes for a more enjoyable plant overall

Singing “I want to be where you are!” Texas is doing y’all right. Lovely alocasias. They definitely love the light
lol thank you! Me and my plants are loving it here lol

I never hear other people repping Jacks houseplant special. It’s seriously an underrated fertilizer that I’ll never stop using.
I'm going to start using it. Seems like all the Big Box stores carry Miracle Gro. I don't really care for it, definitely on the hunt to try something new.
I agree..not sure what it’s not more popular..It’s simple to use yet an effective formula.
I didn’t use miracle gro for long to have an opinion but I can deff speak for jacks and it’s a thumbs up for me
Thanks for the video. I don’t have great luck with Alocasia, but will try the semi hydro- spider mites seem to seek out Alocasia more then any other plant at least at my house 😂. Great video and love your plants

I recently switched most of mine to a Pon & LECA mix and I'm shaken 😅 they're LOVING it
Right?! It’s wild how well they grow in semi-hydro

I really like the Alocasia Prizma (spelling)..its the last plant you showcased in the video. It looks great!! I need to get one!!
Thanks! And yes it has a very cool texture and blue tint to it
Girl your alocasias are thriving! That black velvet is stunning 😍 I def agree with the light.. I’m so surprised how much light my alocasias like! 🤯
Yes! I was shocked too and thanks!!
Thanks for the tips
Thanks for the great info about Alocasias! Love this kind of video; any genus will be worth doing.

😂😂 lol thanks! and good to know about the cuprea
Your regal shield is beautiful. Want one but not yet. I've got to make room
Thank you! It deff has a wingspan on it.
The frydek facing the light is so cute! Nice video
lol thank you

🙌🏽🙌🏽 you’re gonna have a bomb Alocasia garden when they all sprout!
I love that you refer corms as pups :D
Lol jus seemed right🤷🏽♀️
Your so cute , love your Alocasia’s. You should get a zebrina I love how long they are and in my experience grows the fastest out of all my alocasias and looks really cool.
Thanks! And those are very cool
Great information! Love the content and your honest experience.
Thanks mom!
loved this would like to see more of these videos
I’ll be doin a genus each month. So stay tuned for polls in the community tab to vote on the next genus
Your alocasia collection is awesome! So you still had spider mite problems even in semi-hydro....darn! I thought the water/moisture would deter them!! 😩
I use leca and had one plant with spider mites. They bury thier larvae in the plants. I treated my solution and never saw them again.
Yup spidermites are still a thing..deff less incidence of fungus gnats tho !
Seeing this video gives me hope I just got a baby regal shield and I hope she get as large as your beautiful babies.
Yess! Hope it grows well for you!
So beautiful plant's❤😊
My alocasia Zebrina loved my DIY PON. In my 2 years of having it, it ONLY held onto 4 leaves after i put it in PON. I will onlu ever use PON for alocasia. (If i ever buy more)

Yea mine was in a closed container and I think more than anything it was filled with the water too high
New here. Your love language confession has me subscribed now 😅 💕
This was a great video !!! You are giving me hope for Alocasia care cause they don’t like me lol
Thanks Lex💚! And there’s deff hope you lol
Your plants look amazing!😊😊😊😊
Thank you thank you 💚
You give me hope. I’m gonna get an alocasia now. I’m scared
lol go for it! They’re great growers and come in a lot of cool varieties
girl my Alocasia's are in a terracotta but the soil mix is dense idk what I'm doing but they're loving it 😂 one of them didn't even go dormant. And they're right up under the grow light. I was hyyyyyype to say the least lol
Yassss! That’s amazing. They probably love that dense mix
How did you know I needed this video today haha
😂😂 I hope it was helpful!
Omg I didn’t know you lived in Texas too!? 🤯 love that 🥹☺️
Yes ma’am! What part of texas you in?
@@PlantsNTings southeast! I live about an hour and a half away from Houston 😊 what about you?
It would be nice if you break down every plant type like this. So can the next video be about Anthuriums?
I’m thinking of doin a genus each month. So stay tuned for polls in the community tab to vote on the next genus
Very helpful video! Thank you! There is nothing more frustrating than a bald alocasia 😅
lol facts! Thanks Lethius!
Do you have a stingray? I have a little problem with that particular plant. 😊
I need more info on philodendron in semi hydro. I have a gloriosum and I need to figure out if pon or Leca is better
I’m thinking of doin a genus each month. So stay tuned for polls in the community tab to vote on the next genus. But for philo I usually choose leca to give it a bit more aeration and it’s better able to have a dry out period. And my philos in pon tend to get yellow tips.

I just found your channel, thanks for the content. What is pon? Thank you 😊
No problem!

Is it cheaper to make your own pon? And if you do, what do you use to mix together to make the pon?
I’m not sure. I haven’t tried making my own..I imagine in the long run it could be cheaper but maybe have a higher cost initially.
my corms always rot do u have any tips?
I usually put them in a perlite prop box or you can try an open container with wet substrate and don’t let it dry out
