what do you think about John giving up on taking down the High Table in _JW4,_ and just settling for his own freedom? they were originally planning on making at least five movies, rather than four, so I suppose they just combined the plot outlines for both into one final movie, but it was still disappointing for me… it didn’t feel like John Wick was in control of the story 🤷🏻♂️
The fact that John sees Baba Yaga and a life of an assasin as something wrong and incorrect proves that he has managed to change his nature and move on from his old way of living (proving Viggo, Santino and Marquis wrong). His nature has changed thanks to Hellen. In a way, John`s ideals are a part of Hellen that still lives inside of him. That is why he holds onto those ideals so dearly.
The fact that Sophia only help John out due to a marker that she owed him, is that the only reason that she didn't face retribution from the high table as well 🧐
I'm pretty sure they point out in that movie that the marker means nothing since john is excommunicado. Remember in the second movie when santino cashes in his marker they had to go to Winston who did some upkeep in a book and marked it off.
It's amazing how complex these movies are, b/c there's a real foundation (good or bad) to John's and everyone else's actions. These films treat the audience as adults, with a spiritual core. That is so refreshing.
Now that Chapter 4 is out, I'm hoping more video essay UA-camrs like you can start to put the pieces together on this whole series and start looking at the movies in a more philosophical way than just solely for the action. Very well done video.
I never thought the high counsel was too far fetched if a concept- certainly not cartoonish at least. The CIA has done crazier s**t, and I always thought of the “high counsel” could be like an extension of the world bank or something (otherwise the coin economy is bonkers)
I watch this episode when I have finished 80% of Wick 3. I liked your getting under the skin of the mob - high table - and the characters in the film. Your analysis has lent a depth to the theme and the violence in the film🙇. Thanks.
I just saw 4 last weekend and I have to say, 3 is probably my favorite in the whole series. With 4 being the emotional closure the story needed. But 3 blows the door wide to the world of assassin's (basically becoming assassin's creed but better) and the action is just top notch and escalates from everything before, the scenarios insane. It felt like the perfect example of "Yes, and". John is a russian romani mobster? Yes. Assassin's cut their fingers off to show dedication? Fuck it why not. Everybody and their mother is coming for him in ridiculous ways? Yes, let's go. I saw the loving reference to the Villainess in the nutso horse vs guys on motorcyles with swords fight. The knife fight where they were smashing glass and chucking every blade possible at each other was so over the top I laughed in delight in theaters. The double attack dog pistol wielding lady tag teaming with John killing everybody was nuts and awesome. And as a Raid fan, seeing the two villains from that franchise cameo and fight against John had me hollering.
I liked all 3 movies ..I'm going to see John Wick 4 and I'm sure I'll like it ..I generally like Keanu's movies, with Keanu in the main role. Congratulations Keanu Reeves !! 👏💕💯
What happened to the marker given to John by Winston? He ended up getting a marker from the library and that’s the one he used for hallie berry to take him to the coin maker. So what if the marker given to Winston?

One of the directors Justin Lin made a film with one of the actors years before he worked on the franchise, and now the fans have dubbed that film as the "unrecognized" prequel for that character and franchise :P JW1 kiiiiiiind of feels like that to me now >_>
To me, John Wick 3 is a about knowing when to follow rules and when to break them with will and determination. You follow rules for their wisdom, efficiency, and consistency. You don't break rules for convenience or what you think you're entitled to. You break rules though for principles, and when the rules have become arbitrary--overstepping natural (negative) rights.

How wonderful is this series. I might add that a lifetime can last years or seconds. Either way, its duration defines "a lifetime." THIS is the essence of Zen. As Miyamoto Musashi would say: you have only one cut. Make it clean. Make it proper. Live your lifetime in the downward sweep of your blade.
