  • We decided we wanted to learn how to install a Wedi system so we invited them out to one of our bathroom remodels to train us on installing a waterproof WEDI Shower System.
The WEDI product is a 100% waterproof, will not decay, and is easy to cut to any size with a utility knife. It is not necessary to use Cement board /green board/drywall behind the WEDI panels.
We immediately noticed the speed that WEDI can be transported, cut and installed. It’s much faster than conventional methods and saves money when compared to the many different tasks involved in waterproofing a shower. In comparing square foot pricing, the WEDI Building Panel is more expensive than cement backerboards and fiber-cement boards. However, in comparing value, WEDI Building Panel saves extensive labor, provides a waterproof substrate, is less likely to create an environment for mold, is a crack suppressor and weighs 75% less than the other products mentioned.
Part of the cost savings that is not immediately realized by contractors is the speed in which a WEDI shower system can be installed. One day vs. several days with traditional methods.
The WEDI shower system installs is faster and easier because it is lightweight, cuts with a utility knife and needs only 1 fastener per square foot. The end result is a waterproof surface.
The WEDI Fundo Shower Pan is 100% waterproof and pure genius. It is a prefabricated, presloped, tile ready pan that is installed on a wooden or concrete subfloor using latex modified thin set mortar.
WEDI Building Panel used as waterproof backer board on walls connect into the shower pan shiplap notch which is prefabricated.
The best part is this pan is completely waterproof, eliminating the need to install a shower pan liner underneath. The shower pan comes with a pressure fitting drain system with no weep holes necessary. The WEDI Fundo Shower Pan is tile ready immediately after installation.
WEDI offers a presloped extension panels that can be connected to the WEDI Fundo Shower Pan using a shiplap notch which is prefabricated into the extension panels. When panels are cut, the shiplap connection field cut [circular saw and utility knife] into the panel. WEDI Joint Sealant is then used inside the shiplap joint and an additional bead is applied on top of the joints with a putty knife to smooth the sealant over the joints and create a waterproof joint.
The Wedi shower system does everything we want it to do as a product and eliminates other trade steps and time to do those steps. This means more work, in less time. It also means your projects can be completed faster, which equate to more jobs and earning potential.

Did my wet room in 2006 using Wedi wall board and the fundo shower tray together with 50mm wedi board to keep the entire floor at the same level. Used 6mm bonded to 2 solid walls with sand and cement render and 12mm on 2 stud walls. Also used Schluter profiles. Its as good as the day it was installed. Expensive but well worth it. Great product.

Hi Rob ... I concur ... it's really so simple. The Goal ... the water coming out of the shower eventually winds up in the drain. Use materials that won't absorb moisture. If one keeps that in mind your home free. Thanks

    Hey Rob,
    Thanks for the video
Just ran across your video #6 part on a wedi system
Let me tell you we just purchased a complete kit 48 x 6 ft
We also purchased enough board to lay all of the bathroom floor and up 3 foot on the walls
.All of this was extra and does not come with the kit
We made this purchase due to worry about cracked beds and not being able to find a base the size we wanted
The kit arrived with everything needed to build a curbless shower
It is really easy .If a person will look at vidoes and ask a few questions anybody can install it

Love your video - as a lifelong "client" I'd like to say I'm expecting that my bathroom be constructed to 100% waterproof.
To explain better, if I hire someone to add central air to a house for example, I don't expect to have a big conversation regarding vents - I expect the licenced, educated and experienced contractor to outline that for me as functionally as possible and I expect the size of the compressor be chosen for my house to adequately cool and not lead to unnecessary mold situations. I also expect the location for the compressor be suggested /chosen based on the contractor knowledge and experience.
It's that knowledge and experience of basic essential fundamentals that I'm looking for and trust to have in a quality professional with integrity. My bathroom Should Be waterproof - so if I'm hiring you or a colleague to construct it for me, I'm expecting that's a done deal.
Another example, I don't ask a chef at what temperature she is cooking the pork - or where the pork was sourced from or has it been kept in a sanitary fashion until arriving on my plate - those are the "behind the scenes" 'know-how' I'm expecting from an appropriate ly paid and certified professional.
I just had to say this because - if I'd ever be having a conversation with you about remodeling my bathroom it would be about placement, fixtures and the like - because those are the decisions that have to be made. I don't see whether or not the bathroom is adequately waterproofed as a decision - it's a given I'd be trusting you to do correctly. So, I'm not a dumbell and yes I DO very much care.
But if I choose you for the work then I expect you will do the best for me as a client as well as for yourself as the producer of the finished product and business owner.
Thanks for making a very nice video!

Hey Rob! Thank you for the video! It will be a guide for me because I don’t do showers often enough to remember exactly how! And you’re right, the base is got to be waterproof! And worry free!
One thing though; you quoted some great philosopher from long time ago, saying the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting the same results. The phrase is; the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result! Your method from before, was not wrong! It was just the old style. I’d keep that in mind in your next video.

Hi Rob, just found your channel - it's pretty awesome! I wanted to inform you of our new availability of the WEDI fundo systems. My name is John and would like to extend to you contractor specials not found elsewhere. I currently work at Buddy's Tile Outlet in Norwood and we are really beginning to excel under our new management "Wayne Tile Imports", out of Wayne, New Jersey. I'm hoping you might someday stop in if you are ever in the area. We have prices and quality that no other stores can seem to compete with. Buddy's has come so far in the last year that it truly is unrecognizable from what it used to be. There is far too much to mention in this post but, you as well as your customers will experience tremendous savings should you opt to visit our store. Thanks for the videos - I will continue watching more. I also noticed Tim L. at the beginning of this vid - he came to give us a seminar just two weeks ago! Best of luck and continued success!
    Regards-
    John G.

like the looks of this..do you need to install wedi wall board all the way to the ceiling? or can you put ordinary wall board above the wedi? I'm looking to put in a walk in shower and the ceiling is sloping, (Manufactured HOme). Thanks

An important point note, with this system you dont need aqualine gibboard, this replaces it, so more savings in cost and work. However I would like to hear more long term experiences.

Very, very informative. You cover wedi and applying to wood flooring substrate but what about laying this on a cement foundation floor? Going to assume it can be applied easily there using same application techniques?

Clients don’t really care about the process they always look at the ending price. I always hear clients saying but it looked so good. It’s sad to see people doing this tile trade wrong. I always get ask how come your bid comes 3-400 dollars higher then the other ones. I always tell them let me look at there bid and see what there steps are and it’s always a bid like total price tile shower.

    Hi Rob,
I also saw the Wedi products at a trade show and want to try them out on my in laws washroom. They wanted a floor drain under the washer to get rid of the big, ugly plastic pan it currently sits in.
Here's my question. The Wedi board stands at 1 9/16 at the edges, however we needed to use cement board (.5" thick) for the rest of the floor due to the fact that we think a 1 9/16" transition from the tile to the hardwood in the next room would be too high. How can I transition from the Wedi pan to the cement board?
    Thanks in advance,
    Charles

Hi Robert I’m a tile contractor in NY and I was wondering when you want to use that we do product as a contractor do you decide to use it on your own and just add the price in as your cost or do you have to go through the client and let them decide what product they want to use? Ty RM Tile.

    • @ConcordCarpenter
      @ConcordCarpenter  5 років тому

both - I suggest finding something that make you work better and use that. Stick to one product and become the industry expert

  • @BiggMo

Rob, we’ve done extensive moisture testing/monitoring on the weti products and it does seam to be a decent product. BUT, because thinset is a water reservoir that water weeps though, we see moisture creep up and over the shower curbs out into the floor (this is not unique to weti, it’s a characteristic of the thinset) so the weti system should be extended outside the pan.
Personally I prefer schluter because if you go though the schluter training, schluter will warrant the install - which has added tangible value for the client.

Unless there's a liner of some kind, just about all systems will leak. Even if there is a liner, you have issues of water pooling.

Many contractors are stuck in the lowest bid trap. So are still encouraging people to use green board with a liquid waterproofer. Once you are dealing with that contractor it’s hard to tell them you would like to spend more money and be fully waterproof. They say it is not needed.
The only thing I can imagine for why they do this is they don’t want to admit they have been doing the wrong thing for their last 50 clients.

does that not matter to you.

Nothing beats a rubber shower pan and why is he showing a copper pan ? there is never a need to add copper to rubber. Just be a man and do a mud pan . way cheaper and more rewarding than hanging your hat on foam board. It never leaks when done properly . Weidi is just another way to bypass quality craftsmanship and it aint cheaper if you gotta fix it in 5 years. Plus rubber doesnt crack or separate when the house moves or settles. And this guy is saying it eliminates plumbing ? You still have to do the plumbing . Its no different then hardie backer when it first came out untested. Everyone switched to it becasue it was easier to work with . Now all those jobs are having leaks , mold and tile falling off issues. This system hasn't stood the test of time yet , anyone can have something work for a little while. All i know is you can go into a 60 year old mud pan and they still don't leak .

    • @ConcordCarpenter

Rubber is ok but no longer best practice. Resistance to change is our fine ability to create reasons to crib and criticize.
