    Large atmos thrust is actually more efficient for power, but less for comps mass

    If you need to flip the ugly duckling, build a rod of armor blocks off the side. (Don't weld them). Then place large reactors on the end(Don't weld them at all either). The reactors count for their full mass even with only 1 steel plate added and are very heavy. With a bit of patience, grinding and replacing welding frames you can use them to flip over even large rovers or ships . I use this trick all the time on my own survival world.

    • @Splitsie

      I just use pistons.

    • @jadeevetz9426
      @jadeevetz9426 6 років тому +2

      Troo, you can do that. But doing it with the reactor trick doesn't require anything outside of steel plates, and it requires no welding or getting in and out of the cockpit to do. It's really just a matter of personal preference

    Not a very respectful way to discard the Ugly Duckling after all of the loyal service it has provided 😊 If ever you get it right side up again (I'm confident that you will) you need to build a heroes platform on which it can proudly stand for all to see.

    There is an concept called "single point of failure". Some of your cosmetic choices increase small failures into larger problems.
    For example, conveyor junctions instead of tubes between the drills. Tubes connect only on the 2 ends, junctions would connect top, bottom, front and back also adding multiple connection points to hold the engines and drills on. Right now if your center drill goes, I am pretty sure all the drills will fall, which could strike the reversing thrusters and who knows what else.
    IMO you should turn at least 2, maybe 4 of the small downward thrusters upward so dampeners have some chance of keeping you from flipping if you roll or pitch too steeply.
    As you add cosmetic armor, think about both where you are going to bump going forwards, backwards, up, down and turning, but also try to make multiple contact points to everything so if one component is destroyed, a quarter of the ship doesnt fall off, resulting in more block collisions followed by a catastrophic crash. Or don't as it would make good video. ;)

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  6 років тому +5

      Most of my armor designs address the problems with single points of failure as I like to style in such a way as to incorporate each piece into the ship. I've already recorded that part and I did the armor that way for the reason you mention, but I don't think I mention that in the commentary... though the drills end up with nearly all of their attachment points connected to the ship in various ways :)
      Your point about the conveyor junctions allowing me to attach the thrusters to them is a good one, I still would have placed my thrusters where I did, but it's important to remember for other parts

    You know, it's nice to see someone who actually knows what the frell they're doing when it comes to forward to reverse thrust ratio...so many people I've watched insist that acceleration is more important than braking thrust. I'm just sitting there, going, "Why?!" It's like they don't understand that it's beneficial to be able to brake in the same amount of time as they accelerate. Granted, there _are_ a number of folks who aren't like this, but it seems that a majority (of those I've watched) just don't know what they're doing in that respect. And they've been playing like this for a long while, and they're teaching new players that that's how it works. Anyway, sorry for the rant, just wanted to tell you that I appreciate your logical approach to directional thrust.

    • @solospirit4212
      @solospirit4212 6 років тому +2

      Totally agree...and reverse thrust is even more important for a miner, where you may need to back out of a close bore hole.

    • @ChozoSR388
      @ChozoSR388 6 років тому +1

      Very true.

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  6 років тому +2

      Absolutely, reverse thrust is incredibly important to prevent derpy flying causing crashes - more stopping power equals safety!
      On most of my previous mining ships I had the reverse thrusters stuck above the cockpit but I was really happy with how the gap between the drills worked out on this one to allow for a solid number of thrusters without increasing the vertical height of the ship :)
      I might be wrong on this, but my impression of a number of the people who've made survival tutorials is that they actually play the game in creative more than anything else. I've played survival mode from the beginning - in fact I think I held off buying SE until the survival mode was released - and I think playing survival gives you a different approach to problem solving. When you can't just paste your ship and you have to worry about how much effort it will take to get components designs end up differently...

    • @solospirit4212
      @solospirit4212 6 років тому +2

      Yeah..I see a lot of designs that look amazing..but I wouldn't want to try using them. It's much more satisfying to build a working, practical solution..and then make it look good too. Engineering first, then the shiny.

    • @BoroMonokli
      @BoroMonokli Місяць тому

      It makes sense from a thrust to weight ratio. If you have both forwards and braking thrust, you have twice the mass per thrust. If you go all six directions, you have six times the mass to move with the same amount of thrust. Splitsie uses gravity to spare himself the downthrust (upwards facing thrusters) so in his case it's "only" five times the dead weight, reduced by the assymmetry of his thruster composition.

  • @BleachWizz
    @BleachWizz 3 роки тому +1

    Oh man I wish I had space engineers 3 years ago xD 17:30 my mind were going SIDE THRUSTERS! SIDE THRUSTERS! DUUUDE THINK ABT SIDR THRUSTERS!!! XD
    I really like the look of the side thrusters algined in the plane of the center of mass of the ship; it doesn't make a difference but that would prevent them from unnintentionally apply roll torque. So I'd use 3 thrusters where you placed the spotlight and think a lot about more 3 behind the cargo container where I'd be wishing to place a connector xD

    I have only been playing for a few days and these tutorials really help. Day 1 and I landed on a glacier and at first i thought that was an issue (walking 400m to mine stone), but now i am mining ice and using a hydrogen engine to charge an array of batteries. I went for a land based mining vehicle first which is working really well. So far a flying mine has just been one problem after another. I think I was trying to build too small, so i will do my own version of your mine and see how it goes.

    idk if you've discovered this yet, but the sides of the drills don't get damaged by the thrusters. It's 3x3, but only 1x3 area is actually taken? Yea, so thrusters behind the drill won't damage it.

  • @GeocompGhost
    @GeocompGhost 6 років тому

    One suggestion for the miner, you should place several thrusters facing up. This is to give you a little more push to stabilize the miner and help the gyros in getting it to right-en itself.

    Splitsi i do just want to point out, that you do just Ned to supply power to 3 directions of your thrusters. Also it is good to check if your thrust can support your cargo containers, being full to the brim then you will get a more efficient design.

    Well...The Ugly Duckling is parked, that's for sure :) As some others have said, and you hinted at...I would love to the the Duckling as a king of Base Guardian...Like a lot of military establishments do...No reason why a privateer base cant do the same :)
    The new miner is coming along very nicely...I agree , it has a solid , mecha like feel to it..also those shoulders kinda remind me of a bulldog...a compact and powerful little thing :) The one thing I am not keen about with it...those ejectors...I know why you had to put them there, and why you were not happy with them either...but constantly worrying about damaging them is gonna suck :) If they have to be there, I hope you mange to get a good armoured nacelle around them, just to give them some protection. Aside from that...Looking very good...can't wait for the next episode :)

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  6 років тому

      Parked is a very kind description of what I did to the poor little thing :P
      I've already recorded the next episode which had one idea for a name for the ship, but I'm still flexible and I'm liking the sound of something like bulldog especially as it suits a mining ship quite nicely :)
      The ejectors still stick out a bit on the final design but I sort of got used to them, I might have another look at moving them underneath or something as that might look neater...

    • @solospirit4212
      @solospirit4212 6 років тому

      Splitsie heh..I was thinking you ought to run a poll for picking a ship name, other channels do, but I don't know how many variations on Miney McMineface you could take before unleashing the full fury of a Capac on it ,😀The ejectors? As we mentioned in another vomment..get them working well first, worry about making them look good later ☺

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  6 років тому +1

      Oh man, if you only knew what the full fury of Capac looks like ;)
      Ah, Miney McMineFace I'm tempted... I might end up doing a vote again though I'm torn since I did come up with a name but I'm liking some of the others people have suggested more already. One suggestion I like because it appeals to that little troll inside me is to name the ship 'Butter' but to paint it all yellow so it looks as ridiculous as the tick :P

    • @solospirit4212
      @solospirit4212 6 років тому

      Splitsie lol..I like "Butter " for a name. That works in many ways ☺..and it really must be yellow for construction equipment .Throw the names into The Goblet of Fire and see which one turns up 😎

    As always another great video. I thought you could have connected the mediums off the back of the outer drills, which would help centre them.
    Don't forget you need a Vent so that you can breathe.
    Finally, a couple of LCDs in sight of the cockpit and some scripts.
    1. Adv LCDs 2, give you a running total of your cargo
    2. Der Isy's Battery Script, handles all you recharge needs, I cannot build a ship without it now.
    For info, I've had to stop playing my Uranium free world for a bit due to my PC now running at 100% CPU and using 16GB (100%) RAM. I used the standard lander at the game start, been to space (in open top ship) for uranium and platinum, and dug out an underground base. Still resisting the temptation to use a reactor though, it's sitting there turned off, only reactors are on the battle sled or I'd never get the shields recharged. Running Planetary Installations, Surface Occupation and Cargo Ships to give me something to shoot at. New PC at the end of the week so looking forward to getting back in the game.

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  6 років тому

      Isy's script is pretty much the entire reason I put programmable blocks onto this thing :)
      I was thinking about having LCDs in view of the cockpit but I almost always mine in 3rd person so I'd never be able to read them, but if you wanted to modify the design to fit them in you could simply push the drills forward to give a little space in front of the cockpit for the LCDs, or have them hang down over the top like tour bus mirrors...
      Also, oddly you don't need the vent any more, they changed the behaviour so that if you're in atmosphere the cockpits remain breathable. I don't know when the change happened, but it was after my original miner tutorial :P

    • @gordon861

    I like your builds. They are quite stylish and come across as something feels 'real' in a way. When you were assembling the second miner I got the feeling it sort of looked like a crab. Can't wait to see how it looks with your additional plates and color scheme.
    I like the start you created for yourself. A small base in the mountain and a small rover to move about. I wish KEEN offered more options to start a world with, something similar to yours. Awesome work as always.

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  6 років тому

      Thanks, and I completely agree with you on having more starting options. I pretty much always played with the crashed red ship before planets came out and I wanted something that felt similar but I didn't want to make a series that started with 'Oh no! I was doing something silly at the wheel and now I've crashed!' That's how I thought of making a hunting cabin in the woods feel, similar tight on resources start, but with a new feel to it :)

    • @Pecomica
      @Pecomica 6 років тому

      I was a bit peeved when the planets came around. No more start in space (ship with refinery and assembler), along with planets. It was either or. Which is why I always started with the lander and after watching your videos learned how to use it to find resource spots and then finally grind it down for parts to make a ship able to leave the surface for the platinum.
      But even that is a bit to easy. The lander have plenty of what you need. 2 large atmo thrusters is more then enough to make a small miner for asteroid incursion. Haven't really played with the red crashed ship, seem to have way to many resources when you grind it down. Maybe someone will make a mod that just give you a very small refinery and assembler, so you have to work your way up to the big one that can do anything.
      Keep up the series. Best Space Engineers series out there.

    I'm honestly surprised your new ship has enough energy to lift itself, especially with those large thrusters. Hopefully, you won't go out of energy if you have to abruptly decelerate.
    I still think vertical miners are better, but now I've built a miner that can change orientation and reach ore on the sides of the shaft. The mining shafts I'm creating are sometimes more than 100 meters deep, so I can't imagine digging them by rotating around like you do.
    What are you gonna name your miner?

    WOW!!! Mega Miner. Love it!! I was thinking of upgrading my miner now that I have a lot of resources, and I really like the design of your ship, although I will be doing something a little bit different, and will probably put the cargo containers one block in from the edge so that I can run my ejectors down the sides and have them eject out the back. That way they will not be sticking out the sides. I think you are going to lose those ejectors the way that you have them sticking out like that.

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  6 років тому

      That's certainly possible, but I thought I'd be just as likely to smack the sides of the ship into something and break off the conveyor tubes anyway :P
      One thought that I didn't use on this build that you might want to look at is using the connector on the bottom, attach the ejectors from its side ports and have them facing downwards, that might save the tubing and still stop them from sticking out the sides...

  • @radoslawmazurekwaw

    I got annoyed by small amount of ores gathered by miner craft so I made bigger one. Ended up with mining beast with 4 large cargo containers. Started with 4 drills but I set it up too far from each other horizontally so I filled this gap with 3 more connected to cockipt directly. I was so impressed by mining speed that I added 3 more wich is 10 drills in total. Good enough for now but I think I will make something more efficient in the future. But first I need to finish headquarters including construction facilities with welders. Fed up with hand welding already (all settings realistic). For this miner I used 4 large lifting thrusters but it was not enoughh when it's full with cargo so I added 2 more. I also replaced small backward thrusters with 2 large thrusters. I still need to be carefull not to tilt too much as cargo bays get filled but at least I don't need to be perfectly horizontal to be ablle to fly out (backwards) from just drilled hole in ore.

    only thing that realy bugs me, especially since dropped the duckling twice, b/c you didn't disable the battery recharging: the COG (center of gravity) ist most likely to far back from the connector. Ethier move the connector or build a landing pad and add landing gers to the back of your ship. A pad kinda like this: steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/922543041996268532/D83234E77F4DA3A102D66FF0C05BD2026FECB45A/

    I do apologise for what is probably a noobish question. but how do you get the projector to be able help you to repair your ship? if you enable it - after building the ship, i have also ways had it overlay a new projection over the ship, not just what is missing. Am probably missing something simple.

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  6 років тому

      To use it to help repairs, you need to set the projector to keep projection, this will mean that you can then turn off the projector. When you crash your ship, simply turn the projector back on again and you will easily see the blocks that are missing, plus if you have a welder set up on a ship or station with the right parts you can simply fly up to it and repair.
      Have a look at my projector/blueprint tutorial as I go through that part as well :)

    • @Splitsie

      It's often easier to place small landing gear on the ground rather than on other blocks because of the way the game switches your block size to match what you're looking at. If you see people like me placing down small landing gear on large blocks we're usually not looking straight down but looking more toward the horizon to prevent that switch to the other grid size

      With the progression system that was added in the last patch you may not have unlocked the block, go to your G menu then have a look at the progression tree and see if you've unlocked it there. If the connector is unlocked it will be in your G menu, use the search bar as that'll be the easiest way to find it :)

    Oké, this was the problem. I've read that thrusters are needed in all directions, but noone mentioned I need 20+ of them to lift a ship up.. Same with the Gyroscope. Nothing in the game mentioned I need more than 1 on a ship! how the heck should I have figured it out without watching videos? :S

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  5 років тому +1

      I'm glad you're watching this part of the series, I feel like I covered how to get something fairly well balanced from most perspectives in building the butterball so it should be good for helping you to get your first ships up - if you haven't seen them already I also have some tutorials starting from the very beginning that are much more recent than these videos (though the mining ship here still functions perfectly) :)

    • @LaszloIvanyi
      @LaszloIvanyi 5 років тому

      @@Splitsie Yeah I will watch them because this ship was not really working the same for me. Tried to build it almost the same then went to the nearest ice lake started digging down. The damn ship stuck face down the ice in a hole, not able to pull itself out with 6 backward thrusters.. I had to dig around it making a big hole till the ship was able to level out and can fly out upwards with 20sec in the power. The 12 small and 2 large thrusters couldn't keep the ship up with cargo. If I flew up and let go, the ship sank like stone in the water and 4 gyros was not able to manouver it. Also, for me batteries were not reacharging even when I was connected to the base. Do I need to put them in a certain way or connect them with something?

    • @LaszloIvanyi
      @LaszloIvanyi 5 років тому

      I figured also that adding some armor around the engines makes them not explode every 5 min.. 😀

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  5 років тому +1

      @@LaszloIvanyi To get batteries to recharge your base needs to have an excess of power production or you need to change the battery mode to recharge to drain power from any batteries that are on the base (note, there's an efficiency loss transferring power from one battery to another).
      I also always build my mining ships to operate in a way where they need to remain mostly horizontal, since it allows for less weight and less expense not needing to have thrusters to push the ship downwards/keep it from flipping over. In the tutorials I cover a few techniques that can help avoid the flipping problem (but even then it may happen occasionally as I still forget sometimes) :P

    • @LaszloIvanyi
      @LaszloIvanyi 5 років тому

      @@Splitsie Thanks for the reply! Yeah, indeed the problem was that I didn't have enough power on the base. It was a costy mistake, my ship was connected to top high when the power went out, and fell down from my tower :D

    • @Splitsie

      When building complicated armour designs like this it can be quite handy to have a 'repair projector' on board if you take any damage. Set the projector up with the ship's own blueprint lined up on the ship and you'll be able to much more rapidly repair and replace the missing blocks when something goes wrong :)
